The 2019 Annual Student Exhibition made its public debut on Friday, April 12, showcasing works by 38 students in various media, including painting, printmaking, sculpture and 3D design. Art Department scholarships and Exhibit Awards totaling $10,700, funded by private donors and community organizations, were also presented.

Among the scholarships awarded were the $1,250 Frederick and Ursula Perl Endowed Art Scholarship to Will Goodnough; the $2,000 Mary D. Thompson Studio Art Scholarship to Sydnie Kae Pace; and the $4,500 Eli Lauria Honorary Scholarship in Studio Art to Alexandra James. Community organizations including the Santa Barbara Art Association and Santa Barbara Printmakers Association also contributed monetary awards to deserving students.

Goodnough’s series of shadow-boxes entitled “Songs for St. Patty’s Day” was an exhibit standout, as was Pace’s collagraph “Testings” and James’s “Washed up”—a brightly-colored modern chair constructed from detergent bottles and resin.

The student exhibit ran at the Atkinson Gallery on SBCC’s East Campus from April 12-May 3.
