Amanda Jacobs, Marketing Communications Specialist, Office of Communications
Optimism is key, right? Working from home during this pandemic has forced me to continue to constantly look on the brighter side of every annoyance, disruption or hurdle I’m faced with.
The dog is barking again? Oh, well, at least I’m home with my dog.
My mom is asking me how to restart her computer again? Oh, well, at least she’s safe.
We have to reschedule our wedding? Oh, well, hopefully there will be better weather then.
Working from home is one of those perks that other young professionals get to experience at tech companies, not something I thought I would get to experience while working at SBCC.
So, I’m not going to lie, when working from home first came up – I was stoked.
“I can work in my pajamas?!” I thought excitedly to myself.
Well, what is it? Week what? I can’t even keep track anymore. And working in pajamas, well, it doesn’t help your self-esteem or your growing waistline from all the snacks you consume throughout the day.
Will my wedding dress even fit me when we are done with all this? Oh, well, at least there’s more snacks.
But, when it comes down to it, I can’t complain. I mean, I can. I can complain that my fiance, an SBCC student taking Matt Kay’s botany class, has the volume up way too loud and I feel like I’m learning more about fungi than he is. Or, I can complain that the neighbor from across the street gets waaaay too close to me when I take the trash out. Or I can complain that the ergonomics on my makeshift desk are hurting my back and neck.
However, there’s one thing I don’t have to worry about. The Office of Communications. My amazing co-workers and boss who, even through all of this, have never stopped producing top-notch work. We’ve banded together, keep in touch constantly and never let anything slip through the cracks. I definitely can’t complain about them.
In between the work talk, we still get to make each other laugh, share recipes, talk about food, talk about wine… just like we did around the water cooler – only through Google hangouts and in our pajamas.
So, when it comes down to it, optimism really is key, and let’s be thankful that there’s wine – but only after 4:30 – then there’s wine.
Wait, we are out of wine again?
