Science faculty serve up hands-on lessons to Adelante kindergarten students

Kindergarten students from Adelante Charter School - a dual-immersion Spanish school on Santa Barbara's east side - were treated to a science day on SBCC's East campus on Nov. 15, organized by chemistry professor Raeanne Napoleon.

Hands-on learning experiences for the youngsters included exploding gummy bear and elephant toothpaste demos (Dr. Juan Carrera), slime-making (Raeanne), geology/mapping demo (Stephanie Mendes), telescope demos (Sean Kelly and the Astronomy club), and liquid nitrogen ice cream-making (Raeanne) - a treat for the students before they went home.
"It was an honor to host the kinder students from Adelante Charter School and provide them with an exciting day of science!" said Raeanne. "It was important to me that they sat in real college classrooms and labs for the day and be 'college students for the day' so that they feel part of the college experience as early learners. It was especially important for me to have my colleague Dr. Juan Carrera meet the classes and perform some exciting chemistry demos in Spanish; Spanish is not only his first language but also the first language of many of the students and the language all of the students learn in at Adelante Charter School. Maestras Alcarez and Morales (Adelante teachers) work so hard as educators; it was a real treat to host their amazing kindergarteners for the day. I hope the day serves as a template for other elementary school classes to visit SBCC."
