SBCC teams rise to the top in Collegiate Programming competition

Four teams of students from SBCC participated in the Southern California Regionals for the International Collegiate Programming Competition (ICPC) at Riverside City College on Feb. 25. Of the close to 60 teams from both two- and four-year instutions who participated, team SBCC won first, second, third and fifth place among two-year institutions. The two top teams came home with prize money!
The teams were given ten challenging problems and had five hours to solve as many problems as possible while working in teams of three contestants. All SBCC teams completed two problems successfully. One of the SBCC teams (SBCC Bug Magnets) was able to complete three problems and took overall first place in two-year schools.

In addition, SBCC teams Terminal Vikings took overall second place, Luminescent Lumberjacks took third place and Mystery Machine took fifth place.
"It was so great to see our SBCC students work together in their teams in a very competitive environment," says Assistant Professor of Computer Science and this year's ICPC coach and Team Programming Club Advisor Nathalie Guebels. "If you see any of these students, please congratulate them! Many thanks to all SBCC faculty who work hard to prepare our students for a competitive world. A special thanks to all Computer Science faculty who support and encourage our students to become better problem-solvers every day."
