Tom Mitchell ’93
From his time at Central to launching his own highly successful financial planning firm, Tom Mitchell ’93 has followed a path shaped by curiosity, determination, and a touch of strategic foresight
Tom’s academic journey at Central was profoundly influenced by Dr. Robert Fitzsimmons, a beloved psychology professor renowned for memorizing every student’s name by the end of the first class. Captivated by Dr. Fitzsimmons’ engaging teaching style, Tom immersed himself in his courses, ultimately earning an unexpected psychology major. Reflecting on his time at Central, Tom credits the university with instilling in him the focus and discipline that have been fundamental to his success. He developed a habit of studying in the commuter lounge from 3-6pm each day, a routine that significantly improved his grades and earned him a spot on the dean's list. These study habits laid the groundwork for attaining prestigious financial credentials such Certified Financial Planner, Chartered Financial Consultant, and Chartered Life Underwriter.

During his senior year at Central, Tom enrolled in a career exploration course aimed at helping students identify their ideal profession. The outcome? Financial advising emerged as the perfect match. Encouraged by his professor, Tom connected with several financial advisors for informational interviews and knew he had found his calling. This realization led him to Northwestern Mutual in Boston.

In 2014, Tom took a bold step and founded his own firm, Sconset Wealth Management, where he now leads a team of ten exceptional professionals. His expertise, dedication, and success have garnered national recognition, including accolades from Forbes Magazine such as America's Top Financial Security Professionals and Top Wealth Management Teams Best-in-State.

Tom's insights were recently featured in Forbes Magazine, where he shared how his strategic foresight has been a key factor in his business success.

Now residing in Wellesley, MA, with his wife and two children, Tom continues to apply the invaluable lessons he learned at Central in both his professional and personal life. His story is a testament to the power of self-discovery, embracing unexpected opportunities, and the enduring impact of great educators.
