Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried
2017/2018 Common Reader
A highly acclaimed collection of short stories about a platoon of American soldiers in the Vietnam War is the selected Common Reader book for this school year.
The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien was a finalist in 1990 for both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. The book is being incorporated into a selection of AC classes throughout the year, including all First-Year Seminar classes and this competition.

In The Things They Carried, Tim O'Brien depicts the experiences of soldiers in the Vietnam War and focuses on the theme of the things they carry with them: the burdens and traumas of wartime but also the memories, hopes, relationships, and mementos of their home lives that help them face these challenges.
What things do you carry with you at all times, and what is their significance to your life?
To enter this contest, write an original piece—in fiction or nonfiction, prose or poetry—that tells about something you carry, whether a burden or a tool (or both) that helps you stay resilient through challenges.

Specific Requirements
All entries must be typed and no longer than 2,500 words. All entries should refer to the Common Reader text. Using at least one or two examples from The Things They Carried will strengthen your entry.
Eligibility
Any currently enrolled Amarillo College student may participate.
Winners and Prizes
All entries in the writing competition will be reviewed by a panel of judges who will be looking for works that best respond to the writing prompt. First, second, and third places will be awarded.
Submission
Please submit your entry by February 14th to one of the contacts below or drop a hard copy off in Ordway, room 103. Make sure you include your contact information on the first page of your entry.
