Amarillo College Horticulture

Students of Horticulture at Amarillo College have an outstanding resource at their disposal. The new STEM Research Center is a fully automated greenhouse filled with cutting-edge equipment. Small classes ensure that all students receive plenty of hands-on experiences in the greenhouse. If you like working with plants, soil, and the environment and are interested in nature, ecology and growing things, a career in horticulture is the future for you.

What can you do with a horticulture degree?

Students can pursue a certificate in Plant Science and Cultivation and/or an associate degree in Horticulture. Upon completion of a certificate, students will be prepared to immediately enter the job market, while those who complete degrees can transfer their credits to a university in the pursuit of bachelor's and master's degree.
Career choices in horticulture include:
  • Nursery Technician
  • Propagator
  • Plant Breeder
  • Greenhouse Grower or Manager
  • Arborist/Tree Worker
  • Landscape Architect or Designer
  • Grounds Manager
  • Golf Course Manager
  • Pest Controller/Advisor

AC's partnership with Texas Tech

Amarillo College and Texas Tech University are partners in a program designed to propel Horticulture graduates at AC to degrees in Plant and Soil Science at Texas Tech—without having to leave Amarillo to do it.
Thanks to this unique partnership, students who complete an associate degree in Horticulture at AC can then pursue a bachelor's degree at Tech by taking online classes and performing lab work in the AC greenhouse.
This mutual agreement will help facilitate credit-bearing industry internships for AC's students of horticulture. It also opens doors for collaborative research opportunities among faculty and students of both schools, projects to be jointly undertaken at the AC greenhouse, at University facilities in Lubbock, or elsewhere, as appropriate.
