>> FINAL COURSE SCHEDULE - NEW

You should have received an email from the IBEX Team on April 29th with instructions on how to access your Final Course Schedule. If you haven't received it, email us.

Course Schedule Changes
  • As exchange students, you cannot make changes to your schedule yourself.
  • As exchange students, you cannot be waitlisted for classes, only Open classes are accessible to you.
  • We strongly discourage you from making any schedule changes until the semester starts. The only exception is if you need to change a course because your home university has not approved/validated it.
  • You are expected to attend one class before asking to drop a course.
  • NYU's add/drop period ends on September 15thWe strongly recommend you do not add any new course after the first week of classes.
  • During add/drop, you can be enrolled in new Stern courses only.
  • During add/drop, many professors allow students to attend one class before enrolling. We strongly recommend you take advantage of this.
  • Courses cross listed between undergraduate and graduate (coded ****-GB 60**) may have a different, earlier add/drop deadline. They are also not eligible for the Pass/Fail option.
  • You must be enrolled in 12 credits minimum. You can be enrolled in 18 credits maximum.
Once you have identified an Open Stern class that you'd like to be enrolled in, please email us following the email template below. Please note that course schedule modification requests will be processed during our office's business hours: Monday-Friday 9am to 5pm

>> HEALTH INSURANCE - NEW

NYU requires all students to maintain health insurance.
All J-1 students are automatically enrolled and billed for the NYU Health Insurance Comprehensive Plan.
  • The price for the NYU Health Insurance Comprehensive Plan can be found here.
  • You will remain enrolled in this plan unless you downgrade to the Basic Plan or are approved for an insurance waiver (see below)
  • Specific NYU health insurance information is available here. We also recommend you review the NYU Health Insurance 101 Presentation.
Health Insurance Waiver
To determine whether your home health insurance is eligible for the waiver, review the criteria and complete the online form by September 30th. Please note that not many students are able to successfully waive out of the NYU plan as very few international insurance plans meet the criteria established by NYU.
Please contact the Student Health Center directly with any questions at (+1) 212-443-1020 or health.insurance@nyu.edu.
If the NYU Health Insurance is waived after you paid the fee, you will be issued a refund that will be prorated now that coverage through the NYU Health Insurance has started. Information on the refund methods can be found on the Bursar's website.

>> NYU HOUSING (ON-CAMPUS)

*Special Note: NYU On-Campus Housing is not guaranteed and there is limited capacity. Your application will place you on a waiting list and it is very possible that you will not get a housing placement. If you do get into NYU Housing, you will not receive your actual room assignment until shortly before you arrive in New York City. As a result, we strongly recommend you explore Off-Campus options.*
Timeline
Early March: learn about NYU Housing and research Residence Halls (rates available here).
March 16th: Application for the NYU Housing Waitlist opens.
  • Log into your NYU Home using your activated Net ID and password (see instructions above)
  • Locate the Housing Forms card and access the application
  • Submit the application and receive the confirmation email from NYU Residential Life and Housing Services (sent to your NYU email)
  • We recommend you refer to the IBEX Information Portal while submitting your Housing application
Important note: As an exchange student you are NOT required to submit the $1,000 housing reservation payment. However, in order not to pay the $1,000, you will need to complete the Deferment Request Agreement step in the application. In the deferment step, please indicate "Exchange Student" in the comments section, agree to the terms, and click Submit. If you do not see this step following the “Application Confirmation” step, contact housing@nyu.edu. If you accidentally pay the $1,000 deposit, it will be applied as a credit to your final housing bill.
Early June to early August: NYU Housing Services sends out offers.
A housing offer indicates that you are guaranteed NYU Housing but does not include residence hall and room assignment. If you receive a housing offer, you must accept it by the deadline set in the offer email. You will not be able to decline the offer at a later date and your NYU bill for the semester will include a housing charge (note that the bill might be due before you receive your final housing assignment).
ReminderAs an exchange student you are NOT required to submit the $1,000 housing reservation fee. Make sure you have completed the Deferment Request Agreement.
Mid-August: NYU Housing sends final housing assignments.
This is when you you will receive your residence hall and room assignment. Keep in mind that residence hall preferences are not guaranteed and that it is not possible to decline the offer at this point.
Sunday, August 30, 2026: NYU Residence Hall Move-in
Week of December 20, 2026: NYU Residence Hall Check-out
You must check out of your NYU housing by Tuesday, December 22nd at noon or 24 hours after your last exam, whichever happens first. This is a strict deadline set by NYU Housing services and no extensions will be granted. Plan accordingly.
Important Housing Reminders
  • NYU Housing is in high demand and never guaranteed
  • Residence Hall and room preferences are not guaranteed either
  • You will most likely share a suite with other students and you might share a room with another student (particularly if you select low cost housing). Your roommates might be younger or older than you, and they might have a very different lifestyle than yours.
  • Your NYU bill will include an estimated housing fee listed as "Housing and Dining Estimate". Your final housing charge might be higher or lower than the estimate. The charge will mention "Dining" even if you do not select a Meal Plan (more information on Meal Plans will be shared later).
  • Your housing contract will appear as a full academic year contract. It will be automatically cancelled at the end of the Fall semester for Fall only students. No action is required on your part, the IBEX team will notify Housing Services on your behalf.
  • You may receive notifications from NYU Housing that do not apply to you. The IBEX cohort is a very small cohort and you might receive communications intended for full-time NYU students. Contact our office if you have any questions.
  • As an exchange student you are NOT required to submit the $1,000 housing reservation fee at any step of the housing application process.
Once you receive your housing assignment, please email us your address.

>> OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING

You can find an apartment off-campus if you do not receive an on-campus housing offer, decide to decline your on-campus housing offer by the deadline, or if you simply prefer to live off-campus.
You may visit NYU's Off-Campus Housing website for listings and resources. Additional resources on how and where to find housing can be found on this website (some of the housing options listed here might be for graduate students only) and on the OGS website (some of the providers listed here might be for long-term rentals only). We also suggest you get in touch with students from your home institution who studied at Stern in previous semesters.
***Note: DO NOT use the Craigslist website to find housing in New York City. Exchange students have run into scams and other problems when using this site.
Please email us your NYC address when it's confirmed.

>> VISAS

Your acceptance letter was emailed to you on March 9 with the subject line "NYU Stern - Acceptance Letter & Next Steps". Make sure to download the email and save it as a pdf, you will need it as part of your visa application material.
Once you follow the instructions to complete NYU's Office of Global Services (OGS) e-Form and pay the required fee,
OGS will email your DS-2019 to your NYU email addressYou will need to print and sign the DS-2019 to apply for your J-1 student visa at your local US Embassy or Consulate. You cannot digitally sign your DS-2019.

We recommend you review the information compiled by OGS on how to Get a US Visa and on financial resource requirements. OGS also holds regular webinars about the visa application process (see events listed at the bottom of the website).

It is highly recommended you start your visa process as soon as possible. Processing times are expected to be longer than usually and visa appointment availability at US embassies and consulates might be limited.

If you have any questions about the visa application process, please consult with your home school.

NYU Stern takes all forms of academic misconduct seriously, including cheating and plagiarism. Often times, exchange students struggle with plagiarism as they are studying in a foreign language and do not clearly understand what constitutes an act of plagiarism.

  • Complete the Online NYU Academic Integrity Tutorial by Wednesday, July 1st. Make sure to review the materials and watch the videos on the website.
