The University of Amsterdam began in 1632 and, with almost 30,000 students, over 5,000 employees and an annual budget of 600 million euros, is one of the largest general research universities in Europe. The combination of Amsterdam city as a popular cultural and media centre and an international junction of commercial firms, as well as its attractive state-of-the-art buildings - situated along a canal, in a courtyard or surrounded by water – is part of what makes the University of Amsterdam (UvA) so unique.
