NYU Stern Undergraduate College Office of Academic Advising

The Calculus placement exam will help determine what required math course you should take in the fall 2023 semester.

How do I know if I should take the placement exam?
All incoming first-year students with a calculus background who do not see their qualifying test scores in the Albert "Test Scores" area should take the exam. If you do not have a calculus background, you should plan to enroll in MATH-UA 9 Algebra, Trigonometry and Functions.
Note: If you have a final, documented qualifying score (not predictive) for only AP, IB, or GCE A-level exams that is not yet appearing in your Albert "Test Scores" area, you may contact the Math Department at undergrad@math.nyu.edu for Calculus enrollment options. For Stern's Microeconomics courses, qualifying scores must be in Albert in order to enroll beginning on registration day.

How do I check if my qualifying scores are in Albert?
1. Log into your Albert, and visit your Academics tab.
2. Click the "Test Scores" area.
3. If there are no test scores appearing in that area OR there are no test scores that qualify you for enrollment into Calculus I or higher, you need to take the Calculus I placement exam.

How do I take the placement exam?
  • The calculus placement exam is an online exam consisting of two 30-minute parts, for a maximum exam duration of one hour.
  • It must be completed in one sitting.
  • You must be logged in to NYU Home in order to access the form below to register.
  • You will receive additional information and instructions from the NYU Math Department 24 to 72 hours after submitting the registration form.
Register for the Calculus I Placement Exam
When should I take the placement exam?
We encourage you to register and take the exam by Monday, June 5 which will give you some time to determine your appropriate course placement in advance of your Wednesday, June 14 fall 2023 initial course registration date. Additional exams will be available after registration week, but we cannot guarantee that seats will remain open for your desired class.

What course options will be available to me after taking the placement exam?
You will be notified of your exam result within 72 hours of completing the exam. There are two possible outcomes. You will be placed into:
  • MATH-UA 9 Algebra, Trigonometry and Functions (if you place into this course, you will be required to take Calculus I in a future semester)
  • MATH-UA 121 Calculus I
Can I retake the placement exam, especially if I place into MATH-UA 9?
If you place into Algebra, Trigonometry and Functions (MATH-UA 9), you may wait 3 months and repeat the exam only once. For example, if you take the exam on June 1 and place into MATH-UA 9, you can take the placement exam one more time, no earlier than September 1.

What if I qualify or want to take a higher-level math course than Calculus I?
If you are interested in taking a Math Placement Exam (which is different from the Calculus I Placement Exam referenced above) for a higher-level mathematics course, you must first take the Calculus I Placement Exam and place into Calculus I.  Following that, you can email the Math Department at undergrad@math.nyu.edu and request registration for a higher-level Math Placement Exam for placement into the following:
  • MATH-UA 122 Calculus II
  • MATH-UA 123 Calculus III
  • Place out of Calculus III
Is there anything else I should know about the Calculus Placement Exam or math placement exams in general?
  • Math placement exams do not qualify for academic course credit. They are used by the department to place you into the appropriate course for which you will earn the required math credit.
  • Math placement exam results do not appear on your official transcript.
  • Math placement exam results do not affect your GPA in any way.

Questions regarding the Calculus Placement Exam?

Academic Integrity Statement

“At NYU, a commitment to excellence, fairness, honesty, and respect within and outside the classroom is essential to maintaining the integrity of our community. By accepting membership in this community, students take responsibility for demonstrating these values in their own conduct and for recognizing and supporting these values in others.”
— Academic Integrity Policy for Students at NYU

As a new NYU student, you have an opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to maintaining academic integrity on this placement exam. Any attempt to deceive faculty or administration into believing your mastery of a subject is greater than it actually is constitutes a violation of the policy. This includes, but is not limited to:
  • Receiving assistance from other people.
  • Using any resources other than the exam website.
  • Using any device or service to aid in calculation.
The exam is designed to place students into the most challenging course for which they are qualified. It is against your own academic best interests to try to enroll in a course for which you are not yet prepared. Faculty expect students will have mastered the prerequisites for the course they are enrolled in, and students who have not may soon find themselves overwhelmed.

Statement on Student Accessibility
New York University is committed to providing equal educational opportunity and participation for all students. The Moses Center for Student Accessibility (CSA) works with NYU students to determine and implement appropriate and reasonable accommodations, including for this placement exam.
