About the Artists

Soprano Melissa Wimbish

...has been praised for her "vocally stunning," "theatrically riveting," and "simply incredible" performances, and in The New York Times for her "stylish singing." Her work is relentless in variety, spanning classical, contemporary, and popular styles. An in-demand interpreter of living work, the coloratura soprano packs dozens of contemporary opera and art song project credits. In the 2020-21 season, Melissa self-directed a groundbreaking recital for INvision's recital series, sang the lead role in Melissa Dunphy’s Gonzales Cantata, and debuted Pamina in THE MAGIC FLUTE, set to a revamped script and libretto by an all-Black creative team. This season, she performed the role of Stella-Rondo in the world-premiere of WHY I LIVE AT THE P.O. by Stephen Eddins with UrbanArias and, alongside Sandbox Percussion Ensemble, she workshopped and premiered Jessica Meyer’s 20 MINUTES OF ACTION, based on text from Chanel Miller’s open letter to her rapist, at Yellow Barn in December 2021. Notable new music highlights include her dazzling Baltimore Symphony solo debut in Ligeti’s MYSTERIES OF THE MACABRE, the world-premiere of THAT WHICH WE CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT for soprano and orchestra with Peabody Modern Orchestra, the US-premiere of Pablo Manavello’s EL CAMINO DE SANTIAGO at Strathmore Hall, and four US tours with her band, Outcalls. Her Carnegie Hall solo recital debut featured works exclusively by living American composers, including the world-premiere of SPACE IN CHAINS by Jessica Meyer set to poetry by Laura Kasischke. With the original cast of PAUL'S CASE by Gregory Spears and Kathryn Walat, she premiered the role of the History Teacher at Prototype Festival and later recorded the role for National Sawdust Tracks. Melissa fronts the pop duo Outcalls who have rapidly established themselves as a genre-defying powerhouse in the DMV music scene. Their album, NO KING, was praised in The Baltimore Sun and Baltimore Magazine. Outcalls were awarded the prestigious Baker Artist Award (2021) after being named finalists in both 2019 and 2020. Their third studio album, GREATEST HITS, VOL. 1 was released in February 2022.

Tenor Jonathan Pierce Rhodes

...is a native of Orlando, Florida and is a second-year Master’s student at Rice University under the guidance of Nova Thomas. He holds a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the Eastman School of Music and the University of Rochester. This summer, Mr. Rhodes is slated to make his second appearance at the Glimmerglass Festival as a Young Artist for the 2022 Season, where he will reprise his role of Frank in THE PASSION OF MARY CARDWELL DAWSON; cover Le Remendado in CARMEN, directed by Denyce Graves; and premier the role of Gabriel in the Glimmerglass Festival’s new premier opera HOLY GROUND. He received an encouragement award at the Houston District of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition in 2022 and is the previous recipient of the William Warfield Scholarship Award.

Pianist David Hanlon

...is a composer, conductor, and pianist praised by Maestro Patrick Summers as “one of the major compositional voices of the young generation.” David is currently writing The Pigeon Keeper with librettist Stephanie Fleischmann, commissioned by the Opera For All Voices consortium led by Santa Fe Opera.  David’s last collaboration with Stephanie was the chamber opera After the Storm, whose premiere he conducted at Houston Grand Opera. David frequently serves as a conductor and chorusmaster for Wolf Trap Opera as well as assistant conductor and chorusmaster for Washington Concert Opera, and has conducted for companies nationwide, including New York City Opera, San Diego Opera, and Arizona Opera.
