In response to Student Government’s efforts to conveniently provide groceries to students on campus, YSU is partnering with Giant Eagle for on-campus delivery of groceries twice weekly. Students will be able to order and pay online, then pick up their groceries at the Cove in Kilcawley Center on Mondays and Thursdays.
Leading up to the implementation of this service, The YSU Student Government Association (SGA) recognized a stark need for healthy, fresh grocery options on campus. SGA President, Ernie Barkett mentioned how comparable universities like Kent State, Akron, and Cleveland State have grocery stores or markets within walking distance (1 mile), yet the closest grocery store to YSU is over 3 miles away. As the student population continues to rise at YSU, the need for healthy grocery options becomes greater.
SGA initially applied to the Strategic Investment Fund with hopes of opening YSU’s own marketplace within Kilcawley Center’s Pete’s Treats for students and staff to shop during most hours during the day and on weekends. However, SGA recognized the amount of options they were able to provide campus would be limited. However, If Giant Eagle delivered groceries to campus, individuals would be able to purchase a wider array of foods with the convenience of being able to pick up their grocery orders here on campus. This system is much better for YSU as a whole, ensuring the university will be able to sustain this over a long period of time.
How does it work?
Those interested in utilizing the Giant Eagle Penguin Pick Up will need to:
- Navigate to Gianteagle.com/ysu.
- Create an account or login to the online shopping portal. Be sure to include a valid phone number in case your personal shopper has questions about your order.
- Select your groceries online ($35 minimum order).
- Pay with either a credit card or debit card.
- Make sure to check your email for a notification to confirm your order.
Please note that alcohol, tobacco, and medications will not be provided in this service.
Students are invited to come to the Cove for the Giant Eagle Penguin Pickup Sign Up Party on January 15 and January 18 from 10 am – 2 pm for information, prizes and giveaways.
