The Office of Student Outreach & Support (also known as SOS) is excited to announce a new space and expanded services beginning in September! In support of YSU’s mission to “place students at its center”, we provide a safe environment for students to proactively address concerns that may create barriers to their success at YSU. We also address complex student situations that have already impacted their ability to function within the University community. SOS connects students to campus and community resources, empowering them to pursue passions, community engagement, and healthy lifestyle choices. Each of the services below is offered to assist students on the road to becoming proud YSU graduates.
SOS/CARE Team
The SOS staff, along with the YSU CARE Team, addresses issues that may pose a threat to the safety of a student or any member of our campus. We accept (and encourage) referrals from students, their families, faculty, staff, and the surrounding community with the goal of providing outreach, guidance, and assistance.
Women & Gender Equity Support Services
Our expanded Women and Gender Equity Support Services provides education, support, and advocacy for issues encountered by women and other underserved populations on our campus, in the Youngstown community, and globally. Students in need of assistance can now meet with our off-campus partners in a safe and comfortable space on-campus.
Advocacy and Legal Aid Services
SOS assists students who are looking for guidance with issues related to a faculty or staff member, who are considering filing an official complaint or academic grievance, or who just need a better understanding of our campus policies and procedures. We also provide referrals to local agencies/individuals to assist students dealing with legal issues whenever possible. NOTE: SOS does not provide direct legal assistance and is not liable for outcomes related to any referral.
Illness and Hospitalization
SOS serves as the primary point of contact for students (and their families) who need assistance during times of serious illness and/or hospitalizations.
Food and Housing Insecurity
SOS connects students in need with campus and community resources. Additionally, we work alongside SGA to assist YSU students in need of food and basic essentials through the “Penguin Pantry”.
Please stop by our new offices located on the first floor of Kilcawley (Suite 1055).

We care about all of our Penguins and look forward to working with you!
