Our Path Forward: The Campaign for Kenyon

Kenyon Class of 2012 Fall Class Letter

Dear 2012 Classmates,

Lately, we know it seems like good news is in short supply. We wrote this letter in hopes of sharing some of the positive updates on campus and bring you a sense of fall on the Hill. Even during the most challenging of years, Kenyon has remained a bright spot and a point of connection and positivity for its community.

For quick update, in-person instruction just wrapped up for the approximately 950 first-years, sophomores and international students who studied on campus this fall. The numbers were intentionally kept low so no one would share a room. Yes, it took a pandemic for a freshman to secure a Leonard corner room. The College developed clear COVID-related policies and protocols that included regular testing for those on campus and the implementation of the “Kenyon College Commitment.” This is a personal pledge developed in cooperation with the student council that emphasized the well-being of the entire community. Life on campus looked a bit different as Kenyon adapted its many facilities to ensure safe access to dining, athletics, research and more.

In addition to adaptations for on-campus instruction, juniors, seniors and members of the faculty discovered new ways to learn and teach remotely. Yes, it also took a pandemic to make sweatpants acceptable classroom attire for even the professors. Check out our new faculty notes section to hear how your favorite faculty members dealt with the shift to Zoom classes, virtual office hours and online assignments.

Our alumni community has also shifted to meet the challenges of 2020 with an equal degree of innovation — organizing and attending virtual events, connecting with current students and new graduates as volunteer mentors, and giving back during June’s record-breaking online giving challenge, Kenyon Together. We are proud that 2012 was a part of the incredible young alumni response to that challenge. The gifts to the Kenyon Fund helped bolster the student emergency assistance fund and made it possible for the College to award more in financial aid this year, especially when many families’ budgets are strained. Through these efforts, we are proud to announce the funding of new scholarships like the Kenyon Women’s Annual Scholarship and the Lowry Annual Scholarship for underrepresented students, which was announced just last month along with the renaming of the Kenyon Athletic Center to honor Emeritus Trustee William E. Lowry Jr. ’56 H’99. Scroll on to read full details on this exciting piece of Kenyon news! Let’s keep that momentum going and continue to look for ways to make an impact on the Hill.

In event news, planning is underway for Reunion Weekend 2021 and, if conditions allow, it could be the biggest alumni gathering in Kenyon history. Although it is not 2012’s designated reunion year, all alumni are invited back and we will share more details in the months to come.

During challenging times like these, alumni support and connection is more critical than ever. We hope you continue to stay involved with us, whether that is through attending virtual events hosted by Kenyon, sharing class notes, or giving to the Kenyon Fund. Please stay in touch and stay healthy.

Go Lords, Go Ladies!

Sincerely,
2012 Class Committee

Introducing the Lowry Center & Scholarship

William E. Lowry Jr. ’56 H’99 was the first Black student in the nation initiated into Beta Theta Pi, was student body president and captained the football, basketball and baseball teams. He went on to serve in many volunteer roles at Kenyon, including as trustee. In honor of Bill’s accomplishments and impact at Kenyon, the Board of Trustees decided to rename the Kenyon Athletic Center in his honor.
Recognizing his legacy, Board Vice Chair Joseph E. Lipscomb ’87 has created an endowed scholarship in Bill’s name to help bring more underrepresented students to Kenyon. Anyone can make a gift to the annual fund portion of this scholarship, or one of many other scholarships at Kenyon, and provide an immediate benefit to a current student.
Support currents students now with a gift to scholarships
Despite a challenging year, the College remains committed to continuing to meet 100% of students’ increased demonstrated need, with donor support. Every dollar you give goes directly to support students this academic year.
Consider giving today in support of:
  • Hannah More Scholarship for first generation students
  • Kenyon Women’s Annual Scholarship for female students
  • Lowry Annual Scholarship for underrepresented students
  • Pope Memorial Annual Scholarship for students from urban Ohio public school
And, of course, you can make a gift to the Kenyon Fund’s scholarships and financial aid designation, which supports the education of every single Kenyon student.

Class of 2012 Fall Notes

Jack Graham: 2019-2020 has been a big year for me! I got married to my long-time girlfriend-then-fiancée Sarah in December, shortly after being named General Manager of the Aberdeen IronBirds, single-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. We have been living in Maryland for 5 years since first arriving for my new job with Ripken Baseball after my professional baseball career ended, and Sarah teaches 2nd grade at a Title 1 school, helping to make a difference in an underprivileged district. We look forward to the end of the pandemic when we can return to traveling and enjoying married life!

Andrew Doten: I got married to my wonderful wife, Sydney in September! It was a tiny ceremony in my parent's backyard. I wasn't able to invite most of my Kenyon friends, but Dan Rooker was able to celebrate with us.

Kate Ryan: I recently finished up my Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education. While COVID meant that the end felt a little anti-climactic, I'm proud of all the work that went into this additional teaching license and degree as I finished up my 3rd year teaching preschoolers in Minneapolis.

Dan Rooker: Hey all, greetings from Chicago. A lot has happened since last time I submitted a note. . . married 10/12/19 and grateful that Quetzi & I could entertain and see so many Kenyon faces on our big day, helped start a pilot alumni mentorship program over the last 8 mos. for the Swim & Dive team (matches with the Sophomore and Junior classes are happening early Oct!), watched one of my good friends and fellow Lord get married just a few weekends ago (hey-o! Andy Doten), and have been working on getting deeply entrenched in the student loan advice space (it's been a 2yr personal project) through networking in this area << More exciting news on that in 2021. Hope everyone is staying safe and sane in these turbulent times. Get out there and VOTE!

Sonam Lhaki: Dear Kenyon friends, hello from Bhutan. This year has been a scary year for all of us, and I hope this message finds you and your loved ones well. Please take care and stay safe.

Ryan Motevalli-Oliner: Over the course of this year, I began a new job as the Associate Director of Admission Operations at Ohio Wesleyan University and graduated from the University of Southern California with my Master's of Education in Enrollment Management and Policy.

Sam Warlick: I'm still living in my hometown of Nashville, Tennessee, working as a political strategist for Democratic congressional campaigns across the country. In August, after my previous apartment was destroyed by the March tornadoes, I bought a converted factory loft in a 150-year-old cotton mill in the Germantown neighborhood. And earlier this year I was elected Executive Committeeman representing District 19 in the Nashville Democratic Party.

Kathryn Cooper (Feder): Kathryn and her husband Alex welcomed their daughter Ruth Grace Cooper on September 25, 2020. They are loving life as a family of three in Atlanta, GA, where Kathryn works as a kindergarten teacher and Alex works as a management consultant.

Brendan O'Connor: My first book, Blood-Red Lines: How Nativism Drives the Right, will be published by Haymarket in January 2021. Available for pre-order now!

Finn Borge: Finn is working as a product consultant and software engineer in Brooklyn, NYC.  His work is focused on families, small business, and political equity.

Callie Furste (Gruman): Tyler Furste and I welcomed Winnie Furste on July 20th. Kenyon class of 2042!

Zack Goldman: At the time of writing, I haven't really left my house in over seven months due to a deadly virus. Other than that, going great.

Sarah Schulz: Sarah Schulz continues to love living in Baltimore. She is the Upper School English Department Chair at Roland Park Country School where she teaches 10th and 12th grade and coaches cross country. Recently, she moved into a new house right around the corner from Mike Broida and they find time to get together for (socially distant) drinks. This summer, Sarah will graduate from Middlebury’s Bread Loaf School of English with a Master’s degree in English.

Faith Bell: I am now the Marketing and Communications Director for Mennonite Mission Network. I speak into how faith-based organization can produce materials for constituents with an anti-oppression lens.

For emotional support during these trying times I read Circe and participated in the Kenyon Book Club discussion. Also, I continued crocheting a blanket I started my senior year at Kenyon that is based on Avatar: The Last Airbender, a show I have been re-watching.
