Our Path Forward: The Campaign for Kenyon

Kenyon Class of 2010 Spring Class Letter

Dear Classmates,

After a year that felt like a decade, I have true feelings of hope and optimism as we head into spring. As of mid-April, roughly one-quarter of the U.S. population is fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and life feels like it is inching back to “normal.” I also look forward to the day where I won’t have to say, “Oh, you’re actually on mute” while starting a Zoom call with coworkers.

Kenyon is planning its return to normal operations, including having all four classes back on campus in the fall. And, due in no small part to our alumni support, the College is wrapping up a financially and logistically challenging year on track to balance the budget, just like they have the last 50 years.

After receiving a record number of applications, Kenyon has enrolled its Class of 2025. And Chalmers Library will be open to greet them when they move in.

In January, Kenyon received the largest gift in its history that will fund construction of three (!!!) new South Campus residence halls, allowing the College to increase focus on growing resources for scholarships. This is where we come in! The success of the next part of the campaign, Our Path Forward to the Bicentennial, relies on our increased participation and continued support of scholarships for students.

I know it was disappointing to see our in-person ‘10 year +1’ Reunion Weekend go virtual this year, but I'm looking forward to connecting with many of you at the events Kenyon has planned to bring the Hill to us virtually for this nontraditional reunion. Save the date for May 16th-29th and watch your mail for a special opportunity to win some Kenyon swag by joining in the fun! There will be events with our favorite professors, online social gatherings, a tour of Chalmers Library and more. I’m looking forward to crossing paths with some of you at these events—it may not be Middle Path, but just have your favorite Kenyon scene ready as your Zoom backdrop!

The College is also counting on us to show up (and break our record numbers!) for this year’s 36-hour Kenyon Together giving challenge kicking off the morning of Wednesday, May 19th as part of the virtual reunion. Mark your calendar for a fun chance to help Kenyon students today, score prizes, join in some good friendly competition and win bragging rights. After the success of 2020’s Kenyon Together giving challenge, the College knows just how impactful our young alumni community can be when we work together to raise money for the causes at Kenyon that matter most to us. They heard us when we asked to designate our gifts to things like diversity, equity and inclusion during Kenyon Together, and I have been pleased to see these designations remain on Kenyon’s main giving page ever since.

As alumni, we can help today’s students by staying connected with the College and making gifts to scholarships that help Kenyon continue to meet the growing financial needs of students and their families. I invite you to join me in supporting the College in both of these ways. Our alma mater and all of you have contributed to the hope and optimism I feel for the future by providing regular points of connection during an isolating year. No matter how you choose to stay involved with Kenyon, I hope you too are breathing a sigh of relief as we prepare for better days ahead.

In Tortellini Tuesdays we trust,
Laura Goehrke

Support current students now with a gift to scholarships

Despite a challenging year, the College remains committed to continuing to meet 100% of students’ increased demonstrated need, with donor support. Every dollar you give goes directly to support students this academic year.
Consider giving to:
  • Hannah More Scholarship for first generation students
  • Kenyon Women’s Annual Scholarship for female students
  • Lowry Annual Scholarship for underrepresented students
  • Pope Memorial Annual Scholarship for students from urban Ohio public school
And, of course, you can make a gift to the Kenyon Fund’s scholarships and financial aid designation, which supports the education of every single Kenyon student.

Class of 2010 Spring Notes

Caitlin Addlesperger // Last summer, I started a new job at the Ucross Foundation, an artist residency program that is located on a beautiful working ranch in the middle of nowhere in Wyoming — yet still with connections to Middle Path. In my first month, I met Kenyon Review’s talented fellow Misha Rai during her writing residency. Then, in early March, my husband Erik and I welcomed our lovely daughter Hazel to our little family. Here’s to all reuniting in 2025!

Ryan Bash // After I finish my MBA from MIT Sloan this June, I'll be starting at Bain & Company here in Boston. I missed seeing everyone on the Hill last May, but I look forward to our 15th (jeez)!

Kegan Borland // In October, my wife Cece and I welcomed our first child, a healthy, smiley baby boy named Rory. He just turned 5 months old and we are having a blast learning how to parent.

Hally B. K. (Roberts) Paulsen// I just graduated in March of 2021 from the Institute for Functional Medicine as a Nutritional Counselor and Wellness Coach. I currently own my own personal training and nutrition practice called Playful Fitness (www.playfulfitness.org). I am also working under a Functional Medicine doctor, coaching and counseling her patients and learning a ton. I am studying for boards and will sit for boards with Medical Examiners for Wellness Coaching and Nutrition Counseling in October 2021. I just bought a whitewater raft and am looking forward to rafting/camping season which is starting soon! Cheering you all on and hoping you all are well through the end of the pandemic!

Stephanie “Cato” Caton // Greetings Fam! This has been a whirlwind of a year. I devoted a lot of time for self-reflection and set goals on accomplishing two things this year. 1. I was fortunate to give a presentation within an organization on growth vs fixed mindset in the workplace. This was an amazing experience for me and am hoping to continue this process. 2. I am currently training for a CrossFit competition in October. My wife and I reside in my hometown of Amelia, OH with our 3 dogs and 3 cats. If anyone is in the area, get in contact – I would love to catch up virtually or distanced! Love and miss you all!

Matt Colburn // Say goodbye to Matt Colburn, adjunct professor of English. Say hello to Matt Colburn, full-time instructional designer at Howard Community College.

Peter Dumbadze // Social Distancing Day 354: Still working from home surrounded by KN95 masks. A masked Dr. Fauci speaks backwards in my dreams, whispering sweet nothings... Er, I mean... I'm staying healthy by staying home. Otherwise, the only major change is that I now work for myself. I'm the principal of my own office, Out of Shape Architecture, a practice that is dedicated to exploring the intersection of space, politics, identity, and history. At the moment, I'm doing mostly small projects in the New York City area. I like it.

Tracey Farris // I’m a Learning Specialist at Bell Elementary (part of Chicago Public Schools). I recently started going back to the building to teach, which is lovely (read: super bizarre)! My former at-home-coworker Chris Kincheloe (a Senior Test Developer with Cambium Assessment) recently asked me to marry him! We’re starting to plan for a wedding in 2022 and enjoying the process!

Laura Goehrke // My fiancé, Alysa, and I adopted a little 2-year-old dog (on Valentine’s Day!) and named her Blue. Ever since Kenyon, I dreamed of one day having a Corgi named Blueberry. We’re convinced our Dachshund mix doggie has some Corgi in her with her massive ears and Corgi-like bootie. So basically, my life is complete.

Sasha Grumman // Living and thriving in Houston, Texas and really looking forward to the rescheduled in-person class reunion 😎😘✨ Also, catch me competing on this season of Top Chef that aired on Bravo on April 1st!

David Lazarus // In my mind, I'm enormous like a giant rhinoceros or a dinosaur of violent forces. Eyes in the sky, can't find the floor. Got my own chef, plus a waiter and a hostess. Feeling hot as the equator, but I'm rarer than the solstice. Don't trip, take a breath of fresh air if you want it. They always starin' at me kinda like they seen a ghost. I’m Belushi in a toga, house full of animals, Jedi, Yoda. Everybody wants to grow up and be whoever. I'd rather be Darwin, Clark Kent. Need me a new G-Wagon with the dark tint. Now we can celebrate, I want this forever.

Mark Luskus // I am graduating from Emory University School of Medicine this May and will be moving to San Francisco to begin my Psychiatry residency at the University of California, San Francisco. It would be wonderful to connect with any alumni in the Bay Area.

Rachel Rosenberg // After seven years as a lawyer, I made a career change! I'm now a technical writer at Google.

Juney Shober // Oh, you had a baby or got married (not necessarily in that order)? That’s cool. I'm enjoying life with my 4 dogs, 2 cats, 4 pigs, 3 horses, flock of chickens... and LTPSW (long time partner, someday wife), Rachel, who actually takes care of all us animals.

Sam Turner // Like I imagine much of the world these days, Gambier is a strange place to live. It's not exactly quiet with three of the four classes on campus but it's also not as bustling as many of us remember. I'm still working for the Center for Global Engagement and working actively with our international population. Post pandemic I am VERY excited to spend time again with my Kenyon loves either here on the Hill or visiting across the country!
