Our Path Forward: The Campaign for Kenyon

Kenyon Class of 1996 Spring Class Letter

Dear classmates,

After a year that felt like a decade, I am filled with hope and optimism as we head into the warmer months. Many of us are getting vaccinated and life feels like it is inching back to “normal.”

Mostly, we are excited about our upcoming virtual Reunion in May! We’ve been planning a fun Trivia Night Extravaganza for you all! We’ve cooked up clever trivia questions – some Kenyon-focused – and you’ll have a chance to be in a Breakout Room with your friends, too!

Save the Date for May 19th at 8pm ET for a fun chance to get to see your classmates, score prizes, join in some good friendly competition and win bragging rights. Keep your eyes out for more information, including a chance to get a DIGITAL copy of our 1996 Baby Book.

Kenyon is planning its return to normal operations, including having all four classes back on campus in the fall. And, due in no small part to our alumni support, the College is wrapping up a financially and logistically challenging year on track to balance the budget, just like they have the last 50 years.

Recently, it was announced that there will be a pared down Commencement Ceremony for the Class of 2021. They’re even allowed to have two guests with them on campus, which seems like a huge step towards the “before times.”

After receiving a record number of applications, Kenyon has enrolled its Class of 2025. And Chalmers Library will be open to greet them when they move in.

In January, Kenyon received the largest gift in its history that will fund construction of three new South Campus residence halls, allowing the College to increase focus on growing resources for scholarships. This is where we come in! The success of the next part of the campaign, Our Path Forward to the Bicentennial, relies on our increased participation and continued support of scholarships for students.

I know it was disappointing to see our in-person Reunion Weekend go virtual this year, but I'm looking forward to connecting with many of you at the events Kenyon has planned to bring the Hill to us virtually for this nontraditional reunion

The Reunion Events will run from May 16-29 and again, watch your mail for a special opportunity to win some Kenyon swag by joining in the fun! There will be events with our favorite professors, online social gatherings, a tour of Chalmers Library and more. I look forward to bumping into some of you on Zoom!

The College is also counting on us to show up (and break our record numbers!) for this year’s 36-hour Kenyon Together giving challenge kicking off the morning of Wednesday, May 19 as part of the virtual reunion. After the success of 2020’s Kenyon Together giving challenge, the College knows just how impactful our alumni community can be when we work together to raise money for the causes at Kenyon that matter most to us.

As alumni, we can help today’s students by staying connected with the College and making gifts to scholarships that help Kenyon continue to meet the growing financial needs of students and their families.

I invite you to join me in supporting the College in both of these ways. I am hopeful and more optimistic than I’ve been in a long while, as we prepare to gather in May, I hope this gives you something fun to look forward to after this isolating year.

No matter how you choose to stay involved with Kenyon, I hope you too are breathing a sigh of relief as we prepare for better days ahead.

Take care and see you soon,
Sarah Michael

Consider giving to:

I am very proud to announce that I was promoted to Vice President of Workforce Development at the National Urban League, one of the nation's oldest civil rights organizations. I also joined Chief, a women-only executive professional network. Any KC Ladies there, please say hi!

It'll be a year, Mar. 15th, of working from home. Remaining faithful to self-care routines (hiking, at home spa days, socially distant nail salon trips, coaching, yoga and therapy, etc) has been crucial to avoid drowning in insanity. Also, road trips. Oh, and I have funny squirrel & woodland creature stories!

Very grateful to the hard work of Hillary Feder (Linn ’96) who has been on the frontlines of the pandemic. I’ve been working alone in my shop at Feder Knives and I’ve been fortunate enough to make cutlery for many people during quarantine but the highlight has been sending a chef’s knife to legend of the culinary world: Jacques Pépin. Our daughter Lila has been a total champion for the past year and just started Swim team. She’s looking past her 10th grade year and can’t wait to get the hell out of here and off to college. We can’t blame her- we’re sick of us, too. Sending thoughts of good health and prosperity to everyone!

Hello class of 1996! I cannot believe it's been 25 years. WOW! This has been a v.e.r.y. long year, but we've been lucky overall, so it's hard to complain. I'm still living in Buffalo (the most underrated city) and I'm still a sociology prof at the university. My 13 year-old is thriving despite lockdown. My book COERCED came out last year. I continue to miss our classmates Joe Zuiches and Shelly Baker Butler. May you both rest in peace, power, and love.

Christopher Ellsworth
The year on the Hill continues to be weird but I think Kenyon has done really well. Even with Covid restrictions, I’m able to have work study students in the scene shop and we are catching up on things we don’t normally get to. I will admit, it’ll be nice when all this is past us. I see the light!

Enjoying the onset of spring at Kenyon, always a welcome transition. Teaching the Solar Power Systems class with Eric Holdener for the Enviro Studies Dept. again this semester -- we have a great group of juniors and seniors this time around. We're designing a solar electric system for two recently-retired Kenyon staff (Jane Cowles and Dan Laskin) and will see that thru to installation in mid-April. The class is doing another Zoom this semester with Gretchen Bakke, author of The Grid, one of our primary texts. We'll also be doing a Zoom with Marcus Giron, who manages internships at NREL (National Renewable Energy Lab) in Colorado. And, we'll have three recent solar class alumni now working in the renewables industry share their career starts and present prospects with us. Next time you're in town, check out our solar installs on The Village Inn, Village Market, Village Government Center, Hoehn-Saric House, and at the Kenyon Farm -- brought to you by Kenyon and ENVS-104.

Stephanie (Segal) Hill
What a crazy year! I was unemployed for seven months, had to sell my house, started a business (Light Bulb Moment Consulting), and am about to start full-time as a Process Analyst for Dallas-based immigration law firm, B.A.L. (I will stay in Iowa and work remotely.) I also plan to continue my business helping non-profits find and fix problems related to client/workforce experience, capacity constraints, and freeing up dollars.

I have been staying in touch with Kenyon friends through Facebook and texts, and I have really enjoyed all the Zoom sessions with the Class Agents! Both of my sons have been out of high school for more than a year! My older son, Jacob, is finishing his second year at a community college and considering going to college in Oregon for environmental science. And my younger son, Isaac, is working as a lab technician. How are they/we SO OLD?!

Greetings from Prague, Czech Republic! Piper and I, and our two boys Parker (8) and Penn (4) officially moved to this beautiful old European city in January on a relocation from my employer. We're adjusting to expat life, which has been bumpy given the EU struggles with Covid. Nonetheless, were grateful for the chance of this new adventure!

We are happily living east of Cleveland. The boys are growing up fast! We have stayed busy with life, a dog, cats, chickens and sports. Hoping all are well and looking forward to more relaxed days ahead.

Joe Herban
Joe Herban, after 16 years as a Real Estate agent and investor in Greater Columbus, Ohio became a full Broker of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Plus Realty and is transitioning into ownership of the Brokerage. He looks forward to a spring visit with Josh Cornehlsen and Mihi Schuermeyer.

I loved attending pastry school at San Francisco Cooking School in 2020 (even with the large quarantine-shaped pause in the middle of it) and earned a professional certificate in Pastry Arts. I have started doing candy/confection popups, most recently during Christmas and Valentine’s Day, and the response has been positive. You can find more news and info at fruitpunchington.com.
