Our Path Forward: The Campaign for Kenyon

Kenyon Class of 2019 Spring Class Letter

Dear classmates,

After a year that felt like a decade, I am filled with hope and optimism as we head into the warmer months. As of mid-April, roughly one-quarter of the U.S. population is fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and life feels like it is inching back to “normal.”

Kenyon is also planning its return to normal operations, including having all four classes back on campus in the fall. And, due in no small part to our alumni support, the College is wrapping up a financially and logistically challenging year on track to balance the budget, just like they have the last 50 years.

After receiving a record number of applications, Kenyon has enrolled its Class of 2025. And Chalmers Library will be open to greet them when they move in.

In January, Kenyon received the largest gift in its history that will fund construction of three new South Campus residence halls, allowing the College to increase focus on growing resources for scholarships. This is where we come in! The success of the next part of the campaign, Our Path Forward to the Bicentennial, relies on our increased participation and continued support of scholarships for students.

If you haven’t heard, reunion is going virtual this year. The College is hosting two weeks of online programming from May 16-29 and most events are open to all alumni. Even though we aren’t celebrating a reunion this year, I encourage you to register for events with your favorite professors and reminisce with classmates at the online social gatherings. I’m planning to join the tour of Chalmers Library and take part in some of the fun things they have planned to bring the Hill to us virtually for this nontraditional reunion. I look forward to bumping into some of you on Zoom!

The College is also counting on us to show up (and break our record numbers!) for this year’s 36-hour Kenyon Together giving challenge kicking off the morning of Wednesday, May 19 as part of the virtual reunion. Mark your calendar for a fun chance to help Kenyon students today, score prizes, join in some good friendly competition and win bragging rights. After the success of 2020’s Kenyon Together giving challenge, the College knows just how impactful our young alumni community can be when we work together to raise money for the causes at Kenyon that matter most to us. They heard us when we asked to designate our gifts to things like diversity, equity and inclusion during Kenyon Together, and I have been pleased to see these designations remain on Kenyon’s main giving page ever since.

As alumni, we can help today’s students by staying connected with the College and making gifts to scholarships that help Kenyon continue to meet the growing financial needs of students and their families. I invite you to join me in supporting the College in both of these ways. Our alma mater and all of you have contributed to the hope and optimism I feel for the future by providing regular points of connection during an isolating year. No matter how you choose to stay involved with Kenyon, I hope you too are breathing a sigh of relief as we prepare for better days ahead.

Take care,
Your 2019 Class Agents

Class of 2019 Spring Notes

LILY ALIG
I’m currently working as a reporter with Business Insider on their home and kitchen team. I test bakeware, so I bake cakes for work and find people who I can give them to, which is probably the best part of my job. I thought there could never be too much cake...until I made four in one day!

KAYLIN ALLSHOUSE
I was able to work as a PA on a film called Linoleum starring Jim Gaffigan back in November. As that wrapped up, I continue to work on productions in Columbus and New York - anything from comedy to a doc about the Olentangy watershed. Very happy to be living with Maddie Lockyer ’20 and also adopted a moody bunny from Craigslist named Mojito.

LIZZIE BOYLE
I'm in Seattle working as the finance director for Rep. Kim Schrier, MD. I've been working for her in some capacity since January 2020 and it continues to be a privilege to work with someone so committed (and free medical advice on the side has been an unexpected perk this last year!). Eagerly awaiting the Fauci ouchie so my social circle can once again expand beyond my rapidly growing plant collection.

RACHEL COHN
I'm loving living in Chapel Hill, NC as I work toward a master's in library science and hopefully a career as a public librarian. I'm grateful for my Kenyon education every day and miss the feeling of being on campus and so close to my friends. After seven years, I'm finally framing my Kenyon pennant that has previously been Command-striped to seven different walls.

MASEN COLUCCI, SARAH GAGLIONE, BRADY FURLICH
Masen Colucci, Sarah Gaglione, and Brady Furlich have started Transit Productions, a trans-led production company. Their content centers around Chicago’s LGBTQ+ community, including producing and shooting videos for RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 13 queen Denali Foxx. Their work has featured other Drag Race alumni including Kahmora Hall, Detox, The Vixen, Laila McQueen, and Dida Ritz. Their video content currently has over 1 million cross platform views and Sarah’s photos have received over 50,000 likes on Instagram.

Upcoming projects include Bambi Bakes (a cannabis baking show), a dance project funded by the Chicago DanceMakers Forum grant, and That Shit’s Trans, a talk show hosted by their Transit co-founder Irregular Girl and produced in collaboration with OpenTV.

MIA FOX
Mia moved into a Philadelphia apartment with Quinn Harrigan. The corner sushi restaurant knows their take out order which makes them proud and a little concerned at their sushi intake. This summer Mia will hike around the city with the U.S. Forest Service.

TAYLOR HAZAN
In the decades-long two years since graduating, I only feel closer to Kenyon and the people who made it special. Seeing all of these conversations about racism, equity, inclusion, and justice continuing on and off campus reminds me just how special this place is. We can keep growing and learning and changing because we trust in the potential of the Kenyon community. We can love a place and also continue to help grow it. Though I am not going to be a part of Alumni Council for much longer, I am always here as a listening ear!

MICHAEL LAHANAS-CALDERON
I've moved in with the beautiful Bella Blofeld here in beautiful Berkeley, CA. I'm still working for Inequality Media, now as a Digital Strategist. Bella just got a job working for the World Wildlife Fund, which is very exciting. We've also recently commissioned art of our cat from another Kenyon alum. Beyond that, I'm eagerly awaiting for my turn to be vaccinated, so I can go back and visit my family in Ohio, whom I haven't seen in over a year!

BRENT MATHENY
Currently an Editorial Assistant working for Oxford University Press in NYC.

CONNER McELDOWNEY
Just wrapped up my first year as a 3d printing technician at Ample Inc. It's a really exciting and unique position that I couldn't have found without my Kenyon education, and especially my experience with the Kenyon VRC through the art history department and Professor Zhou.

SARAH McPEEK
Back in December 2020, I qualified for candidacy in my PhD program in Evolution, Ecology, and Behavior. This summer, I'll be digging into my field work on a little explored toxic plant - beetle pollinator - spider predator community at Mountain Lake Biological Station in western VA.

AUDREY NEUBAUER
I'm currently completing a Masters of Sustainable Development at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. It's a welcome challenge during this stressful year.

DANIEL OLIVIERI
I'm (somehow) working as a computer programmer for the company Vanguard and living down the street from the Liberty Bell. Been doing my best to replicate Peirce's fried plantain recipe with mixed results. Hope everyone's doing well.

PHILIP SHEERS
I spent a great 6 months living with Alex Beatty ’21 and Ishan Mirchandani ’20 in Annapolis and became a proud dog uncle. I am excited to move back to Baltimore as in person teaching opens up, and am looking forward to transitioning back into the international relations field after this academic year!

JASMINE WILSON
Hey, y’all! 2020 certainly was a wild year for the entire world, and I hope that you all made it through with as little scars as possible. Now thankful to be in 2021, I am still happily living in my hometown of CLE. I recently began grad school at Cleveland State University pursuing a Masters in History - kudos to the American Studies Dalton Fellowship from Kenyon! I will also begin teaching full-time in Cleveland come August in either middle grades ELA or math. Excited for this new journey almost two years out!
