Our Path Forward: The Campaign for Kenyon

Kenyon Class of 1998 Fall Class Letter

To the Class of 1998,

Fall in Gambier. Kenyon couldn’t be more Kenyon than it is at this time of year: cool breezes balancing out the afternoon sun, crunchy leaves blanketing everything in autumn colors and an endless supply of friendly faces along Middle Path. Take a minute to soak in the nostalgia and perhaps you may even hear Kenyon’s bells.

All four classes are studying together again in Gambier, experiencing similar fall treasures as well as the new Chalmers Library that apparently includes a disco ball-esque skylight feature. There’s a bonus first-year cohort finishing a semester in Copenhagen! Plans are taking shape for an unforgettable Reunion 2022 on the Hill. All alumni are invited back for the weekend of May 27th.

The College just shared a new strategic plan that will guide its planning and actions leading up to the bicentennial in 2024. It includes core elements like developing a computer science program informed by the liberal arts; enrolling, retaining and graduating a student body that is representative of the talent and diversity of our nation and the world; implementing a holistic approach to health and wellness, with an emphasis on mental health; and expanding its commitment to environmental responsibility.

The Kenyon Access Initiative will bring more high-achieving students to Kenyon thanks to a $25 million matching grant from the Schuler Education Foundation. Any amount we give through this Kenyon Access Initiative will be matched 1:1 and will go to a new scholarship for students from families with limited means and those ineligible for government aid — up to $25 million.

Scroll on to learn more about Kenyon’s strategic plan and the Kenyon Access Initiative (and how they fit into our 2024 bicentennial celebration).

As you read about what’s in store for Kenyon’s future, I hope you’ll join me in supporting today’s students with a gift to the Kenyon Fund and (if you have the ability) making an additional gift to the Kenyon Access Initiative that has the potential to bring 50 additional talented students to Kenyon each year.

Kenyon couldn’t be Kenyon without involved and supportive alumni. As the bicentennial draws closer, the challenge to each of us is to do a little to help make Kenyon the special place it is. This could mean becoming an alumni volunteer, attending a College event, submitting a class note or setting up a recurring monthly gift.

To Kokosing, Old Kenyon, and the calling bell,
Jonny Nicholson

Making a gift

Gifts of all sizes add up: every year, gifts of $100 or less to the Kenyon Fund total more than $250,000. Also, every dollar given to the Kenyon Access Initiative between now and June 2026 will be matched and used to create permanent new scholarship funds to enroll exceptional students with limited resources and those who are ineligible for government aid. MAKE A GIFT

Class of 1998 Fall Notes

The Notes section is a little lighter this time around, perhaps signaling a return to “normal”, exhaustion or fatigue, or the lack of “news”. Regardless, it is good to hear from you. A special thank you to those who shared some news and a special request to consider providing an update for the next class letter.

Carrie (Kepple) Jadud: I recently started a new job as a community organizer for Maine People's Alliance. I'm so grateful I finally discovered this work; turns out that providing avenues for ordinary people to speak their truth to power is totally my happy place. We've been living in Lewiston, Maine, for four years now. Matt Jadud stepped away from higher ed and moved into federal service, working with colleagues at 18F to make government systems more equitable and people-centered. Matthew (12) and Simon (8) have been, among other things, learning to cross-country ski, exhausting the local library's considerable supply of manga, and growing out of all their shoes.

Rob Kletzker:
My wife, Melissa Deere Kletzker, and I celebrated our 6th anniversary and our son’s, Grierson, third birthday this summer. I celebrated by quitting my job and starting a new company. We’re still in Charlotte and enjoying life. So, if you’re in Charlotte and want to grab a drink or have your garage remodeled, hit me up.

Lark Cowart: I recently returned to government work and am a child protection prosecutor in Kane County. I have been fortunate that with covid there is more flexibility than there used to be which has let me continue to coach high school swimming and teach at a local university as an adjunct. I typically teach mediation, constitutional law, evidence and criminal procedure but recently added a course on human rights and responsibilities. My husband, Kevin, continues to work at Argonne National Lab and has been very happy with the new work from home options available. Our children, Sean (7) and Meredith (4) are now of an age where they have their own activities so we are busy with Cub Scouts, triathlon, swimming, baseball and mountain biking.

Torsten Seifert: I and my family continue to enjoy the Texas life. Work at Hilti remains busy as the construction industry remained robust through COVID. I have taken on a new role this summer helping shape the future of the company developing Hilti's global group strategy 2030. Kristin continues to manage the family with all 3 kids physically in school (HS freshman & two 3rd graders). Life is good in Texas!

Jascha Smilack: Lindsey ’99 and I continue to reside in Cambridge, MA. I am the Director of HarvardX Courses, and the last few years have been more than a little busy for online learning. Lindsey continues to manage volunteers for Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services. Both of our children are in high school and we recently took a virtual Kenyon tour. So many great developments there! In other notes, we saw Greg Davis '97 and family in August.
