Our Path Forward: The Campaign for Kenyon

Kenyon Class of 1994 Fall Class Letter

Dear classmates,

Kenyon couldn’t be more Kenyon than it is in the fall. Am I right? I’m talking cool breezes to balance out the afternoon sun, crunchy leaves blanketing everything in autumn colors and an endless supply of friendly faces to greet you along Middle Path. Whatever the season, I look forward to running into you on the Hill again soon, especially since we haven’t had a chance to reconnect there in some time.

And what a campus we’ll have to return to! Chalmers Library is open and beautiful. (Have you seen the disco ball-esque skylight feature?) All four classes are studying together again in Gambier. (With a bonus first-year cohort finishing a semester in Copenhagen!) And plans are taking shape for an unforgettable Reunion 2022 on the Hill. (Mark your calendar for the weekend of May 27. All alumni are invited to attend!)

In other exciting campus news, the College just shared its new strategic plan that will guide its planning and actions leading up to the bicentennial in 2024 and beyond. You will be pleased to see it includes core elements like developing a computer science program informed by the liberal arts; enrolling, retaining and graduating a student body that is representative of the talent and diversity of our nation and the world; implementing a holistic approach to health and wellness, with an emphasis on mental health; and expanding its commitment to environmental responsibility.

You have also likely heard the announcement of the Kenyon Access Initiative which will bring more high-achieving students to Kenyon thanks to a $25 million matching grant from the Schuler Education Foundation. Any amount we give through this Kenyon Access Initiative will be matched 1:1 and will go to a new scholarship for students from families with limited means and those ineligible for government aid — up to $25 million.

I could go on for pages about these two pieces of Kenyon news, but lucky for you, I don’t have to. Scroll on to learn more about Kenyon’s strategic plan and the Kenyon Access Initiative (and how they fit into our 2024 bicentennial celebration).

As you read about what’s in store for Kenyon’s future, I hope you’ll consider supporting today’s students with a gift to the Kenyon Fund and (if you have the ability) making an additional gift to the Kenyon Access Initiative that has the potential to bring 50 additional talented students to Kenyon each year.

Kenyon couldn’t be Kenyon without involved and supportive alumni like us. As the bicentennial draws closer, I challenge each of you to do a little more than you have in the past to help make Kenyon the special place it is. This could mean becoming an alumni volunteer, attending a College event, submitting a class note or setting up a recurring monthly gift.

Thank you!
John Manley

P.S. Is Kenyon already in your will? Let the College know about your planned giving by emailing daleiden1@kenyon.edu.

Making a gift

Gifts of all sizes add up: every year, gifts of $100 or less to the Kenyon Fund total more than $250,000. Also, every dollar given to the Kenyon Access Initiative between now and June 2026 will be matched and used to create permanent new scholarship funds to enroll exceptional students with limited resources and those who are ineligible for government aid. MAKE A GIFT

Class of 1994 Fall Notes

Colleen (Hopkins) Grazioso: Now that my husband & I can both work from home forever, we have relocated from NJ to Manchester Center, Vermont! So far, so good! Reach out if you find yourself nearby!

Ravi Wijeyeratne: I timed my early retirement from finance and banking perfectly with a divestment 2 months before covid-19 choked everything in Sri Lanka. It allowed me that time visiting with my daughter at uni in Cornwall and my wife for more bird watching activities and hikes. We also set up a regular Zoom and WhatsApp chat group amidst 4 Kenyon TAs namely Maricelle Pinto Tomas ’92, Carole-Anne Barouch ’92, Irina Vasenina ’95, Alexei Soshnin ’95 and regular 4 year Kenyonite Manas Bapela '93. Irina has invited us to her grand holiday home in Nice for a reunion that we all await! My work is now limited to projects involving the French embassy I represent as their Honorary Consul to push through a cable car project in my mountainous city as a solution for urban transport along with other initiatives to make my city Kandy Sri Lanka a walking city.

Scott Baker: This past summer, my startup partner Natalie Marsh (formerly of Kenyon's Gund Gallery) and I announced the formation of a new nonprofit organization: ViVA Virtual Visiting Artists, a new service designed to bring exceptional visiting artists to colleges, universities and other organizations virtually. We're a low carbon, turnkey option for any organization that is feeling the pressures of budget and staffing cuts – or wouldn't know where to begin to put together a compelling artist series on a topic like climate change or anti-racism. It's fantastic to finally be public as a 501(c)3 after a year of building our organization from scratch during the pandemic. Check us out at: vivavirtualartists.org.

Jon Meredith: Life remains good here in Durham, NC. I'm in my 11th year as the Middle School Director at Durham Academy. Not much has changed but my daughter is now in college! Go (U. Richmond) Spiders!

Kathy Foley: Hello dear classmates! I've spent most of the last 18 months getting to be a Licensed Riding Instructor in the State of Massachusetts and completing requirements to become PATH International certified as a Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor (CTRI). Very intensive process with huge rewards - seeing my students blossom as they learn horsemanship and (often adaptive) riding skills. The need in our area is great and we have a waitlist already! Hoping to fundraise (anyone handy at this, give me a shout!) to get our outdoor arena covered so we cannot be at the mercy of the weather and serve more students for a longer season.
I continue my psychotherapy practice, though I am still mainly doing Telehealth from my home office at this point, seeing very few (fully vaccinated) clients in person.

My son is back at Champlain College and my daughter is a senior in high school deciding where she wants to go next. I am filled with gratitude for family and friends and this beautiful farm we love to share - recently by adding hip camp sites :)

Mischi Carter: I have been living in Seattle since graduation. I love what the city has to offer but spend as much time as I can at my mountain home in the Cascades. I try to get my kids (10 & 13) out skiing, backpacking, and kayaking as much as possible. My in-person education based business survived the pandemic. I love staying in touch with Kate Weiser Macdonell and Cathi Haight (now Hendrix). Life is good!

Katie Usher Snyder: Alfred Snyder and I are psyched that our oldest daughter is in Ohio attending her freshman year at Case Western Reserve University. We got to reunite with Marcie and Matt Mennes in Cleveland while dropping her off, feeling all the Kenyon connection vibes. Seattle is doing us right and we’re excited to be back in person, teaching at our neighborhood public schools.

James Feuer: Just played 1st recurring role on TV's A Good Cop, out in November. Currently seeking representation, if you know anyone...?
