Our Path Forward: The Campaign for Kenyon

Kenyon Class of 1984 Fall Class Letter

Dear classmates,

Kenyon couldn’t be more Kenyon than it is in the fall. Am I right? I’m talking cool breezes to balance out the afternoon sun, crunchy leaves blanketing everything in autumn colors and an endless supply of friendly faces to greet you along Middle Path. Whatever the season, I look forward to running into you on the Hill again soon, especially since we haven’t had a chance to reconnect there in some time.

And what a campus we’ll have to return to! Chalmers Library is open and beautiful. (Have you seen the disco ball-esque skylight feature?) All four classes are studying together again in Gambier. (With a bonus first-year cohort finishing a semester in Copenhagen!) And plans are taking shape for an unforgettable Reunion 2022 on the Hill. (Mark your calendar for the weekend of May 27. All alumni are invited to attend!)

In other exciting campus news, the College just shared its new strategic plan that will guide its planning and actions leading up to the bicentennial in 2024 and beyond. You will be pleased to see it includes core elements like developing a computer science program informed by the liberal arts; enrolling, retaining and graduating a student body that is representative of the talent and diversity of our nation and the world; and expanding its commitment to environmental responsibility.

You have also likely heard the announcement of the Kenyon Access Initiative which will bring more high-achieving students to Kenyon thanks to a $25 million matching grant from the Schuler Education Foundation. Any amount we give through this Kenyon Access Initiative will be matched 1:1 and will go to a new scholarship for students from families with limited means and those ineligible for government aid — up to $25 million.

I could go on for pages about these two pieces of Kenyon news, but lucky for you, I don’t have to. Scroll on to learn more about Kenyon’s strategic plan and the Kenyon Access Initiative (and how they fit into our 2024 bicentennial celebration).

As you read about what’s in store for Kenyon’s future, I hope you’ll consider supporting today’s students with a gift to the Kenyon Fund and (if you have the ability) making an additional gift to the Kenyon Access Initiative that has the potential to bring 50 additional talented students to Kenyon each year.

Kenyon couldn’t be Kenyon without involved and supportive alumni like us. As the bicentennial draws closer, I challenge each of you to do a little more than you have in the past to help make Kenyon the special place it is. This could mean becoming an alumni volunteer, attending a College event, submitting a class note or setting up a recurring monthly gift.

Thank you!
Megan O'Donnell Patton

P.S. Is Kenyon already in your will? Let the College know about your planned giving by emailing daleiden1@kenyon.edu.

Making a gift

Gifts of all sizes add up: every year, gifts of $100 or less to the Kenyon Fund total more than $250,000. Also, every dollar given to the Kenyon Access Initiative between now and June 2026 will be matched and used to create permanent new scholarship funds to enroll exceptional students with limited resources and those who are ineligible for government aid. MAKE A GIFT

Class of 1984 Fall Notes

Stephen Oatway: Our monthly FADC Zoom call was replaced by an in person mid-August DPhi reunion in Vermont with Beta Boy. Golf, e-bikes, microbrew, BBQ, and great conversation. Participants included Andy Folkerth, Jan Klamar, Don DeVere, Rick Berggren, Ben Barnett, Dan Dessner, Frank Top, Bryan Merryman, Jeff Seidel, Paul McCartney, and Steve Kelley. Pictures available!

Helen Missy Bemis: My husband and I just relocated to Fort Collins CO, plenty of room for visitors if you’re passing through!

Joe Caperna: Still in San Diego, didn't leave for 14+ months during covid. Recently, we (Pat Conway, my husband) took our first trip to Hawaii, married after a few decades together, and made it legal for taxes. Sure hope we can have a 2024 Reunion. Still talk with Terri Lammers, keeps me laughing, and hope to see Amy Rentschler Hyde again, soon, and rest of y'all.

Jeff Bell: Business and personal travel has returned. June was Oklahoma, Maui with Colleen ’85 at the Attorneys General conference. July was Cabo, then Denver (middle son Jon started law school at U Denver). Saw Adam Rankin during a trip to NYC. August included a trip to Ohio for my High School reunion, and a trip to the Willamette Valley for Pinot wine tasting with Colleen. September was Kiawah Island, SC for a Legalshield conference, and then Phoenix for LeaderCon. Colleen and I went to Ohio for a wedding. The rest of October includes a trip to Michigan for the annual Kenyon Symposium with Doug Heuck, Geoff Catlett, Gerry Zyfers, David Guenther, Kevin Sweeney ’82, and Tom Murphy. Retired Kenyon professor Michael Evans will join us and lead a seminar on Thus Spoke Zarathustra.

Brad Remick: Melanie (Pasquale) Terry and I are married!! We’re splitting time between Philly and Denver. We welcome any visitors!

Amy Sziklas Durrett: Mac Durrett ’81 and I became grandparents in April 2020, so I am now known as Grammy. It’s been as special as everyone who preceded us in this venture had told us it would be! Halil has brought us so much joy and we are so grateful to have him and his parents living near us in Atlanta.

Peter Fischelis: I am definitely feeling the years, I became a grandfather for the first time this past May and am thoroughly enjoying it! Baby Lilah was born on May 4th. Yes, she will be hearing it for the rest of her life, "May the fourth be with you". My wife and I have been spending more time up north skiing at Killington and enjoying our place in Strafford, VT. Reach out if you are ever in the area. (pfischelis@yahoo.com). I'm still living in Concord, MA, working in IT and still coaching the varsity girl's high school soccer team at Concord-Carlisle. With a little bit of luck I'm on track to get my 100th win this season. One of my players who graduated last year is playing for Kenyon this season, fun to see it come full circle. Over the last year, I've enjoyed Zoom calls with some old Kenyon soccer mates, David Stone ’83, Garth Rose ’83, George Carroll ’83, Rick Klaus, Pat Grant ’85, Bill Alderman, Pat Shields ’85 and Coach Vennell. Our soccer experience at Kenyon remains something that brings us all together even now.
