Our Path Forward: The Campaign for Kenyon

Kenyon Class of 1964 Fall Class Letter

Dear classmates,

Kenyon couldn’t be more Kenyon than it is in the fall. Am I right? I’m talking cool breezes to balance out the afternoon sun, crunchy leaves blanketing everything in autumn colors and an endless supply of friendly faces to greet you along Middle Path. Whatever the season, I look forward to running into you on the Hill again soon and hopefully we can all start planning now for our reunion visit in 2024.

And what a campus we’ll have to return to! Chalmers Library is open and beautiful. (Have you seen the disco ball-esque skylight feature?) All four classes are studying together again in Gambier. (With a bonus first-year cohort finishing a semester in Copenhagen!) And plans are taking shape for an unforgettable Reunion 2022 on the Hill. (Mark your calendar for the weekend of May 27. All alumni are invited to attend!)

In other exciting campus news, the College just shared its new strategic plan that will guide its planning and actions leading up to the bicentennial in 2024 and beyond. You will be pleased to see it includes core elements like developing a computer science program informed by the liberal arts; enrolling, retaining and graduating a student body that is representative of the talent and diversity of our nation and the world; and expanding its commitment to environmental responsibility.

You have also likely heard the announcement of the Kenyon Access Initiative which will bring more high-achieving students to Kenyon thanks to a $25 million matching grant from the Schuler Education Foundation. Any amount we give through this Kenyon Access Initiative will be matched 1:1 and will go to a new scholarship for students from families with limited means and those ineligible for government aid — up to $25 million.

I could go on for pages about these two pieces of Kenyon news, but lucky for you, I don’t have to. Scroll on to learn more about Kenyon’s strategic plan and the Kenyon Access Initiative (and how they fit into our 2024 bicentennial celebration).

As you read about what’s in store for Kenyon’s future, I hope you’ll consider supporting today’s students with a gift to the Kenyon Fund and (if you have the ability) making an additional gift to the Kenyon Access Initiative that has the potential to bring 50 additional talented students to Kenyon each year.

Kenyon couldn’t be Kenyon without involved and supportive alumni like us. As the bicentennial draws closer, I challenge each of you to do a little more than you have in the past to help make Kenyon the special place it is. This could mean becoming an alumni volunteer, attending a College event, submitting a class note or setting up a recurring monthly gift.

Thank you!
David Schmid

P.S. Is Kenyon already in your will? Let the College know about your planned giving by emailing daleiden1@kenyon.edu.

Making a gift

Gifts of all sizes add up: every year, gifts of $100 or less to the Kenyon Fund total more than $250,000. Also, every dollar given to the Kenyon Access Initiative between now and June 2026 will be matched and used to create permanent new scholarship funds to enroll exceptional students with limited resources and those who are ineligible for government aid. MAKE A GIFT

Class of 1964 Fall Notes

In early October, Nuffy Withington ‘62,  Steve Fischman ‘63, Graham Gund ‘63, Tom Bond  Barry Jentz and Dave Schmid dined together in Boston to solve the problems of the world and reminisce about Kenyon.

Harry Schermer: I remember the Two Culture Symposium when I was a student. C.P. Snow was a featured participant (his book on the subject had created quite a stir). Edward Teller was there (yes, that Edward Teller of H-bomb fame). I know because I sat across from him at lunch in Peirce Hall. Looking back, the symposium was quite a feat for a small, rural liberal arts college in financial difficulty to pull off. But that was Kenyon.

John Hattendorf’s
wife of 43 years, Berit, died on 10 May 2021, age 79, after a long series of illnesses. John’s latest book, To the Java Sea: Selections from the diary, letters, and reports of Henry E. Eccles, 1940-41, documents the experiences of a naval officer commanding a destroyer on the Asiatic Station at the beginning of World War Two. The free digital version of the book is available from the Naval War College’s website at https://digital-commons.usnwc.edu/usnwc-historical-monographs/28.

Philip Harter: Here we are tiptoeing towards 80! A couple of years ago our daughter, who is the director of a major lab at GaTech, decreed that we would no longer spend the winters at our farm in the mountains of Vermont with its 1800 vintage house and 5 miles from the nearest village. Damn, it's irritating when your kids are right. As a result we now split our time about evenly between the farm and a retirement community adjacent to the Emory Campus in Atlanta. I feared moving there, but it has been surprisingly wonderful. I no longer ride my bike thousands of miles a year on some grand trips, and Nancy has memory issues. So, we sit in our rocking chairs contemplating interesting, productive, and fulfilling lives.

David Gullion: Linda and I are enjoying our retirement immensely - mine for 5 years and Linda's for 9 months. This summer we had an adventurous and exhilarating 300-mile bike ride in Northern Idaho before Covid decimated Idaho. Pickleball has become our favorite exercise and we play most days. Even though we live in Boise, we have a townhouse in Petaluma north of San Francisco where we visit all four of our adult children who live in the SF Bay area. No grandchildren yet, but four grand-doggies. We, like almost everyone, are eager to travel more, but recently we had to postpone our bareboat experience in the BVIs until next year assuming Covid will be better contained. Be safe, stay well and Blessings to All.
