Our Path Forward: The Campaign for Kenyon

Kenyon Class of 1962 Fall Class Letter

Dear classmates,

Kenyon couldn’t be more Kenyon than it is in the fall.  Chalmers Library is open and beautiful. (Have you seen the disco ball-esque skylight feature?) All four classes are studying together again in Gambier. (With a bonus first-year cohort finishing a semester in Copenhagen!) And plans are taking shape for an unforgettable Reunion 2022 on the Hill -- Which will be our 60th! So Mark please your calendar for the weekend of May 27. Our class is so fortunate to have permanent representatives on the Hill, John Knepper and Tom Hoffman who has been planning for our reunion and keeping us informed. Please check this URL for ’62 reunion news:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/135247431993

In other campus news, the College has shared the new strategic plan that will guide planning and actions leading up to the bicentennial in 2024 and beyond. You will be pleased to see it includes core elements like developing a computer science program informed by the liberal arts; enrolling, retaining and graduating a student body representative of the talent and diversity of our nation and the world; and expanding a commitment to environmental responsibility.

You have also likely heard the announcement of the Kenyon Access Initiative which will bring more high-achieving students to Kenyon thanks to a $25 million matching grant from the Schuler Education Foundation. Any amount we give through this Kenyon Access Initiative will be matched 1:1 and will go to a new scholarship for students from families with limited means and those ineligible for government aid — up to $25 million. Scroll on to learn more about Kenyon’s strategic plan and the Kenyon Access Initiative (and how they fit into our 2024 bicentennial celebration).

As you read about what’s in store for Kenyon’s future, I hope you’ll consider supporting today’s students with a gift to the Kenyon Fund and, if you can, making an additional gift to the Kenyon Access Initiative that has the potential to bring 50 additional talented students to Kenyon each year.

Kenyon couldn’t be Kenyon without involved and supportive alumni like us. As the bicentennial draws closer, I challenge each of you to do a little more than you have in the past to help make Kenyon the special place it is. This could mean becoming an alumni volunteer, attending College events, submitting a class notes or setting up a recurring monthly gift.

And, since 2022 will be milestone reunion for our class, I am excited to announce that an anonymous donor will match dollar-for-dollar all by Class of ’62 member gifts to the Kenyon Fund up to $1,000!

Please, let’s keep in touch with each other.

All the Best,
Jon Katz

P.S. Is Kenyon already in your will? Let the College know about your planned giving by emailing daleiden1@kenyon.edu.

Making a gift

Gifts of all sizes add up: every year, gifts of $100 or less to the Kenyon Fund total more than $250,000. Also, every dollar given to the Kenyon Access Initiative between now and June 2026 will be matched and used to create permanent new scholarship funds to enroll exceptional students with limited resources and those who are ineligible for government aid. MAKE A GIFT

Class of 1962 Fall Notes

Charles Albers: After 54 years with a home in New Jersey, I have finally sold my condo there. I now live full time in lovely Sarasota, Florida. Life is good. It’s great to see Kenyon moving forward, maintaining its status as a great institution!

Barry Gorden: Jinx and I took advantage of the summer to visit our daughter Laule'a '10 and her husband Teddy in Medford MA (our last trip was canceled by COVID). We also rode the cog railway on Mt. Washington in New Hampshire and walked the Marginal Way along the coast in Ogunquit, ME. We're glad we got to do it before the Delta variant clamped down.

Richard Rubin: I used to think the word “octogenarian” referred to some sort of fish. But that was before I got a Kenyon education. Now I’ve met the fish and it’s me!

No complaints. Five daughters and six grandchildren later there is much to be happy about and thankful for -- including some fresh body parts—a new aortic valve, a stent and a pacemaker—none of which are available at Walmart. Marcia says I no longer have any excuses for avoiding housework.

Taking longer walks, trying to up my Scrabble game, still running a blog (NEWPOLITICALSTAGE.com), and trying to convince Marin residents (and a recalcitrant Water Board) we need to be looking at desalination as a partial remedy for California’s historic and recurrent droughts! Glad to see Alma Mater is thriving and aging gracefully, fond hellos to my fellow classmates, prayers for a COVID-free future and a nation that has much healing to do.

Paul Heintz: Still a partner with the Philadelphia firm I joined after graduating from Penn Law School. I handle aviation law matters and trusts and estate work and counsel some major charities. I also still fly airplanes, an addiction acquired in high school and nurtured at the late “Port Kenyon” with its then three grass runways, shared with Kenyon’s golf and football teams, and two hangars.  Jane and I still travel but international treks have taken a second seat to visiting our four children and seven grandchildren, all fortunately clustered in the Northeast. Jane (aka St. Jane) claims something else remains unchanged: she says I have been in assisted living throughout our 58 year marriage.

Tom Hoffmann: Jan and I are just fine, fully vaccinated, three each, and flu shots. Kenyon and Gambier have been very careful, and it shows. We are an island of blue in a sea of red. Knox Community Hospital is stressed. 95+% of students are fully vaccinated. Gambier requires everyone to wear a mask indoors. The students even wear them walking down Middle Path! They want to be in school, and do not want to return home! And we do not want to get sick.

The best part for us is the return of sports. We attend all home soccer games, Lords and Ladies, tennis matches and even field hockey.

We are the host family for two women tennis players, one from Venezuela, now Spain, and the other from Scotland. They had a short fall season, now over, and will start again in the spring. They keep us young.

Swimming meets are on the agenda. We have passes to get into the KCAC, now the Lowry Center. We are able to go to indoor events, masked.

A major project for me is working to get ODOT to reduce the speed limit on Quarry Chapel Road from 55 mph to 35 mph. Been over a year and the end is still not in sight. Have gotten good community support.

I turned 81 last month and decided it is time to scale back on my trademark practice. I am in the process of transferring my clients to a new firm in Seattle created by two trademark lawyers experienced in the wine industry. I will then be “of Counsel”.

We have no future travel plans. We did visit family in August in Wellfleet on Cape Cod. Lots of lobster, walking the beach, looking for sharks, spending quality time with family. Drove both ways stopping overnight in Albany and Corning NY.

Looking forward to the 60th Reunion next May. Please join our class Facebook page (www.facebook.com/groups/135247431993) and please post!
