Class of 2003 Spring Class Letter
| |
| Dear Fellow 2003 Classmates,
It’s officially Reunion month on the Hill! Even though this year isn’t a milestone reunion year for us, all alumni are welcome back for Reunion Weekend this year (and in the future!). The fact that alumni are FINALLY able to reunite on campus again after two years of virtual gatherings is something worth celebrating. The sense of isolation that has accompanied the past two years has been challenging to navigate, but having the support of you all, my Kenyon family, has continued to brighten the darkest parts of this pandemic for me — thank you!
Last fall, I hope you heard about (and perhaps supported!) the new Kenyon Access Initiative. We are eight months into our five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. Our extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. In further great news, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.
I hope you’ve seen the news from President Sean Decatur this winter that, in response to calls from students as we approach our Bicentennial, he agreed the time had come to look beyond Lords and Ladies. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process to consider a new athletics moniker. This letter was finalized before the results were known, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.
This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. One exciting way this is happening is that Kenyon is refraining from new commitments in specialized private investment funds that focus on fossil fuels — expecting that less than 1% of Kenyon’s endowment portfolio will be invested in fossil fuels by 2030. This news, and more, was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, you can sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.
As summer approaches, Kenyon is preparing to welcome several groups of alumni back to campus. First, more than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, as you know, ALL alumni are welcome back to campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! If you aren’t able to make it back for Reunion this year, I hope you’ll plan to attend one soon – maybe our 20th next year in 2023?!
All of this excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience today, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a gift today. We all know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future — not just professionally, but personally. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.
Thank you! Justin Karpinos ‘03

Class of 2003 Spring Notes

Adam Booth writes, “This summer Jessica (Huff) Booth ’02 and I will be celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary. We've been through lots of change in building this life together and had challenges to get through but so much of it has felt easier being with my favorite person.”
Jessica (D'Ardenne) Tsuda continues to live in Denver, Colorado where she is an employment attorney and mom of three kids and three dogs. After two years of mostly being a homebody due to the pandemic, she is looking forward to traveling again and visiting Kenyon friends. Look out Evonne (Skoutelas) Marinakis - you are the first stop!
Nate Fergus and his wife, Brittany (Miami U. '04) are raising three little boys (6, 4, and 1) in Charlotte, NC. Their older two, Jonathan and Colin, wore their Kenyon sweatshirts to school for "college sweatshirt day." Amazingly they were the only two sporting the purple! They were very proud of being so different in the land of UNC, Duke, and Wake! His wife is on her way to publishing her first children's book, Stuck In the Mud, which stars Jonathan as the main character in his birthplace, our Hilton Head home. (Look for it on Amazon in a year or so!) Ian, our 1-year-old, has the nickname “Joey Chestnut” since he eats more than the other two combined. Maybe a future Lord football player? Nate is still a "bone head" musculoskeletal and breast radiologist with Charlotte Radiology. Rumors have it that he may be named Medical Director of Carolinas Imaging Services soon…
Nathan Hara and his family are enjoying Guatemala City and its eternal spring. He writes, “The weather is pretty much perfect all year long! I loved catching up with Eric Christiansen when he literally flew a jet into the country with a couple hundred acquaintances ;) I would welcome other visitors before his assignment here ends next summer.”
Megan (Kilkenny) Burcl reports that she left the state of Ohio for Florida this winter: “My older son put it best: ‘I did not move to Florida to wear pants.’ We enjoyed putting on hoodies and light jackets on the season's coldest days. Don't worry: the boys also wore shorts, but I am probably raising a future Florida Man or two.”
Ashley Rowatt Karpinos and Justin Karpinos are still in Nashville, working at Vanderbilt Medical Center and University School of Nashville, respectively. Their two boys (ages 9 and 7) are keeping them busy with swim practices, soccer games, bike adventures, and impromptu piano concerts and jam sessions. Justin recently decided to step back from coaching swimming, after 15 years leading the school’s program, and is excited for new professional challenges and more time in the classroom. Both are grateful for a school year that has felt a little more normal than 2020-21. Justin has also been fortunate to work with Syd Lindblom ’14 this year as a teaching and swim coaching colleague. They are excited to come back to Kenyon for our 20th reunion next year! They would love to connect with anyone passing through Nashville in the meantime.
Laura (May) Higgins got married to her best friend, Nick, in May 2021 in beautiful and vibrant Nashville, TN in front of 75 of close friends and family. They currently live in downtown San Francisco. When they aren't working they are exploring new Napa wineries, running on the Embarcadero or traveling East to see friends and family.
Natalie Philpot is still living her best single mom life in Southern Vermont with her two beautiful daughters and portly cats. She is still working in substance misuse prevention and recently spoke at Vermont's Recovery Day as a featured voice of recovery in our communities. Unfortunately, she won't be able to make it to Reunion this spring (it's a Chaser reunion, too - bummer), as she will be performing in a musical that weekend. Once a theater geek, always a theater geek. She's stoked to be in touch with so many great Kenyon folks. Come visit Vermont!
Elizabeth Poett is busy running her family’s cattle ranch in CA. She also has a cooking show called Ranch To Table, now in its second season on the Magnolia Network and Discovery Plus. She enjoyed visiting with Julie Smith and Drew Seaman last summer.
Drew Seaman and Julie Smith have been living overseas for nearly ten years, and have been in Singapore for two and a half years. They made it home to the States last summer for an epic road trip. Over the course of 11,000 miles and three months, they were happy to get a glimpse into the lives of many dear Kenyon friends. Now back in Singapore, Drew helps restaurants market themselves better to “kids these days,” while Julie is Managing Director of APAC for a marketing research agency.
Danielle Tandet is continuing to kill it in the Admissions & Placement office at The Gateway School in NYC. She also wants “to shamelessly plug my pupster, Nash. He is a 9 pound mini dachshund who has his own Instagram. Feel free to follow him @Nash_the_Naughty. He appreciates any new followers!”
Carlos Vega reports that, “after 14 years coaching, with the last eight as the Head Swimming and Diving Coach at Trinity College, I’ve decided to hang up my stopwatch to pursue other professional opportunities.” In April, he will begin with Consigli Construction (Hartford, CT) in their business development department focusing on higher education / athletics / life science / healthcare and other private projects. His wife, Alyssa, is doing great and working at a children’s boutique store. Lucy (6) and Penelope (8) are two peas in a pod and bring them so much joy and love!
Stephanie (Todd) Wasköenig writes, “During the nearly two years of lockdown and restrictions here in Germany, I discovered a real passion for trail running. I have found a couple of trail ultra-marathons that were harder than my senior thesis. At the beginning of April I will run the Marathon in Paris and in June I will attempt my first 50 Miler running the Alps around Salzburg. I am both daunted and excited. We are still based outside of Frankfurt, Germany, feel welcome to let me know if you are in the area. I loved having Jeff Bridges visit a few months ago!”
