Sprin 2022 Class Letters

Class of 1998 Spring Class Letter

KC Class of 1998,

It’s officially Reunion month on the Hill! For those eager to get back to the Hill, all alumni are welcome back for Reunion Weekend this year (and in the future!) and the fact that alumni are FINALLY able to reunite on campus again after two years of virtual gatherings is something worth celebrating. And, I hope you are making plans to attend our 25th class reunion next spring!

I hope you have heard about and know a good number of you have already supported the Kenyon Access Initiative. We are eight months into our five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. Our extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to enrolling students. In further news, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.

I suspect you saw President Sean Decatur’s response to calls from students to look beyond the Lords and Ladies moniker. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process. This letter was finalized before the results were known, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.

This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. One exciting way this is happening is that Kenyon is refraining from new commitments in specialized private investment funds that focus on fossil fuels — expecting that less than 1% of Kenyon’s endowment portfolio will be invested in fossil fuels by 2030. This news and more was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, I encourage you to sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.

As summer approaches, Kenyon is preparing to welcome several groups of alumni back to campus. First, more than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, as you know, all alumni are welcome back to campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! If you aren’t able to make it back for Reunion this year, I hope you’ll plan on attending our 25th next spring.

All of the excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience today, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a gift today. We know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future — not just professionally, but personally. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.

Fare thee well!
Jonny Nicholson

Class of 1998 Spring Notes

Aaron Czechowski, Adrienne (Misheloff) Czechowski '97 and their family have been enjoying the Pacific NW and the Seattle area for the past 10 years. Aaron has been at Microsoft for 15 years, currently leading a team of technical writers for Windows documentation. He's also active with the Washington Trails Association (WTA) writing for the hiking guide and volunteering several times a month to help improve WA State’s expansive network of trails. They spend lots of time at the new Climate Pledge Arena to cheer on the Seattle Kraken NHL team. Ezra, their oldest son, is in his second year of a program at Washington State University called ROAR, where he's learning to live and work independently while managing epilepsy. Sophia, their daughter, is a senior in high school, has applied to nine small liberal arts colleges across the country, and patiently awaiting responses. Including one that's on a Hill in central Ohio!

Last August, Kathryn Kerr Fitzsimmons moved to Savannah, GA to resume a teaching career she had missed the entire six years she lived in Michigan. Kathryn teaches 4th grade Reading and Language Arts at an independent school on Wilmington Island and absolutely loves it. Kathryn’s husband is able to spend about half his time between Savannah and Michigan and will move down permanently in the next year and a half. Kathryn has never had so many visitors in her life as she has since moving to Savannah. The highlight was in late Jan. 2022 when her five besties from Kenyon (Megan Grannis Blackmer, Kielty Gallagher Nivaud, Lauren Crossett Weymouth, Kristina Racek Pechulis and Ali St. Vincent Von Kennel) came for a long overdue girl's weekend. They had a wonderful time and began planning travel arrangements for our (gulp) 25 year reunion next May!

Andrew Lerchen is doing well in Evanston, Illinois. He is a Global Account Manager with Egencia, now part of American Express GBT. His wife, Melanie, has been in private practice as a therapist for some time and is starting a practice of her own. Ivy will be starting 6th Grade this fall.

Amber Nelson is currently working as a co-star in an upcoming feature length film, The Farm, starring Traci Lords.

40s are feeling fabulous and Christine O’Neill is very grateful. She is currently based in Hastings on Hudson, NY, a very quaint Rivertown just outside the city, while also spending half her time in Aptos, CA, outside Santa Cruz, with her boyfriend. Christine met her boyfriend a year ago after sharing what felt like a particularly vulnerable Facebook post about what she was looking for in a guy. Yep!

Christine has been working for herself for almost 5 years now and that also keeps getting better. She supports those who’ve created success on paper but don’t feel successful, and also works with a lot of executives and entrepreneurs in creating a deeper, more impactful, more meaningful experience of life and work. Christine is also currently in a feminine embodiment intensive program which is expanding her understanding of herself and others, her capacity for love, and what it really means to follow her bliss. It's pretty wild.

Christine would love to connect, always, especially if you’re in the Santa Cruz area, where she doesn’t know a lot of people! Love you all! christine@christineoneillcoaching.com

Lark (Cowart) Peterson and family (husband Kevin, son Sean (7), and daughter Meredith (5)) are all doing well. Lark and Kevin have been able to take advantage of all the remote work options during covid to spend more time together as a family and it has let them better keep up with all the kid activities. This past winter they all got into ice skating thanks to the public rink in the park behind their house. Lark’s son Sean just finished his first season on a swim team and her daughter is eager to follow in his footsteps. In Lark’s professional life, she returned to the Kane County State's Attorney's Office in February to continue her work in child protection. Lark is still an adjunct professor at Aurora University for social work and for criminal justice and also continues to coach high school swimming. Lark’s newest responsibility will be serving as Cub Master for her son's Cub Scout pack in April 2022.

Torsten Seifert and family continue to enjoy life in North Texas, although recent cold spells have not been so much fun. Professionally, Torsten is enjoying a new challenge at Hilti, working closely with the global Executive Board to develop Hilti's 2030 strategic plan. They’re also adjusting to high school and having a teenage driver (Sebastian, their oldest son is a high school freshman). Torsten hopes to see many 98'ers in Gambier next year for our 25th reunion!

Amanda Wagoner Meade was called as the new Senior Pastor of First Christian Church of Louisville in January 2022.
