Class of 1996 Spring Class Letter
| |
| Dear Classmates,
It’s officially Reunion month on the Hill! Thank you for registering early. I will see many of you back in Gambier this May to celebrate our belated 25th Reunion year. We will be able to visit with members of the classes above and below us, and it will be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! Our class will have several meet-ups during the weekend – including our mimosa and Bloody Mary party, hosted by your Social Committee Chairs. Come get your 26th Reunion memento cup and catch up with old friends. All events will be on your schedule.
News from the Hill:
Kenyon Access Initiative
You may have heard about the new Kenyon Access Initiative. We are eight months into our five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. Our extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. In further great news, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.
Lords and Ladies
Hopefully you saw the news from President Sean Decatur this winter that, in response to calls from students as we approach our Bicentennial, he agreed the time had come to look beyond Lords and Ladies. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process to consider a new athletics moniker. This letter was finalized before the results were known, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.
Green Initiatives
This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. One exciting way this is happening is that Kenyon is refraining from new commitments in specialized private investment funds that focus on fossil fuels — expecting that less than 1% of Kenyon’s endowment portfolio will be invested in fossil fuels by 2030.
I am proud to serve on the Board of the Philander Chase Conservancy along with several other Kenyon grads and fans. The Conservancy is responsible for keeping 5,700 acres of land in the College’s “viewshed” protected from widespread development. I wanted to share the good news that the Conservancy just received national accreditation from the Land Trust Alliance Accreditation Commission. This is a national mark of distinction, received after rigorous evaluation, showing that a land trust meets high standards for land conservation. Please let me know if you want to learn more. Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter can be found at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.
All of the excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience today, from seminars to scholarships. Thank you to the many people who have already given to the College this year. I hope everyone will join me in making a stretch gift this year in honor of our belated 25th Reunion.
I look forward to seeing you in May on the Hill.
Thank you! Cat Broadhead

Sarah Slater Lang
Hi Class of ‘96! I continue to work as a family practice physician in Streetsboro, Ohio - this September marks my 18th year in practice. Recently I have transitioned from being 100% clinical to half clinical and half administrative. I am the Eastside Medical Director for the University Hospitals of Cleveland Primary Care Institute which basically means I help oversee about half of our outpatient primary care offices. It’s a little bit clinical, a little bit recruiting, a lot of finance and Human Resources and I have been putting my Kenyon liberal arts education to good use! My other full time job is chauffeur and event coordinator for my 5 kids William (16), Bennett (14), Sam (12), Eliza (11) and Norah (9). As you can guess there is never a dull moment in the Lang household!
Abby (Foon) Stybel
I started a full-service marketing agency with a partner about 4 years ago, which has kept me occupied during the pandemic. My husband and I are planning my daughter's Bat Mitzvah and keeping busy going from one sport to the next with our kids, Ella (13) and Landon (10). Also, I decided it was a good idea to get a second dog in the fall, so I'm trying to train our puppy and keep the older one from killing her. I’m excited to get back to the Hill for our reunion and hope to see lots of you there, especially Cat Broadhead, Beth (Bennett) Hebbeln and Ellen Henningsen.
Jane (Ballard) Roth
Shout out to all the educators who are weathering Covid and buoying young people through this nonsense! Our boarding school made it until January 2022 before our first student case, so I count us lucky, but man, this whole experience makes me feel so lucky to have had the experience our class got to have. Thanks, '96!
Brandie Mayes Wagner
I just celebrated 25 years working for Stellantis (Chrysler). Time really does fly by! I remember leaving Gambier right after graduation and starting an internship with Chrysler the very next day. My son Miles is all grown up with a real job and Clo is a sophomore in high school. Clo keeps me busy with all of their dance, drama and Girl Scout events. I've been their Girl Scout leader for the past 11 years and am proud that I have been a Scout for 41 years. I recently joined the board for the Fine Arts Council of my county and hope to continue bringing the arts to young people. I love taking teenagers to gallery openings and plays. Looking forward to the reunion and staying in a dorm again.
Andrew Richmond
My family and I are still enjoying living (almost) along the Ohio River. My wife and I recently guest curated Hindsight: The Art of Looking Back, an exhibition of art and objects related to memory, history, and nostalgia. The show runs through April 24 at the Decorative Arts Center of Ohio in Lancaster.
Steven Radak
Every time I get one of these, I think to myself, "Okay, I'll get back to that later" and then "later" becomes 2 or 3 days after the due date. Not this time! Yes, we are still alive out here in the Seattle area. Amanda (Carter) Radak '98 and I will be celebrating 24 years of marriage in April. We have survived the COVID years in pretty good shape. The one upside is that my company has embraced remote work and so I am now happily working from home with my wife. We discovered we still like each other even being together for so much more of the day. We're still working on getting to the empty nest stage. The elder spawn is working her way toward getting a degree in automotive tech and moving in with her spouse. The younger spawn was a "lucky" high school graduate of COVID and is currently still trying to figure out what he wants to do next. Otherwise, life goes on, thankfully. We are grateful for the continuity of our lives in the chaos of current events. Eventually, I will figure out how to carve out Book 1 of an apparent series I am dreaming up. It keeps getting bigger every time I touch it. Hopefully, I'll remember to get to these on time more often.
Julia Glynn Warga
I can't believe that I've been working in the library at Kenyon for 18 years. The staff moved in to the new Chalmers Library over the summer, and I love the new space. If you are ever in Gambier, I can give you a tour (Stephanie Hill visited with her sister over the summer when we were still under construction). While I was not re-elected to Mount Vernon's City Council, I had a lot of fun campaigning. Chris and Annie ’04 Ellsworth had my sign in their yard and Jamie-Lyn Smith Fletcher & I drove around Mount Vernon canvassing. I am still active in the Mount Vernon community; the mayor recently appointed me to the city's Municipal Planning Commission and I am volunteering with Jamie-Lyn's COVID-19 vaccine outreach efforts. Jamie-Lyn and I are also making plans to play ping-pong in my garage.
Cat Broadhead
Looking forward to seeing everyone at reunion!
I am working hard on my company, NeoHear.com, which serves the d/Deaf and HOH as well as hearing allies. I am planning on changing it to a nonprofit in the future, and I encourage any alumni who are d/Deaf or HOH to reach out if they are interested in being involved. There is a lot of work to be done on this front.
Christopher Ellsworth
My 20th year as the TD in Dance, Drama, and Film Kenyon is coming to a close believe it or not. Oh the stories I can tell! Looking very forward to seeing folks on the Hill come May.
Delia Kloh
I am beyond thrilled to say that I have moved back to the East Coast, and even better, back to my beloved Charlottesville, VA!!!! I really do hope this is the last move. Once I buy a house, people should assume I will be buried in the floorboards. I have also returned to working at the University of Virginia. (Which you know, is a job, so there are jobby things) I am sooo very excited to return to the Hill for our delayed but not denied 25th reunion! If you swing through town, don't hesitate to take me to a winery.
Liza Cleland Greville
While '96 doesn't seem like that long ago, adding P'26 feels both surreal and pretty great! Our younger son will make Kenyon his home this fall, which makes the transition to an empty nest just a (tiny) bit easier. I'm a psychotherapist in rural PA, still enjoying horses, and looking forward to seeing Kenyon friends as we re-emerge to the world!
Stephanie Segal Hill
Still own my own business, Light Bulb Moment Consulting, while working full-time as Senior Process Analyst for Berry, Appleman, and Leiden (an immigration law firm out of Dallas). I may have spent my last winter in Iowa and am scoping out warmer places to live. Chime in if you have a great suggestion! I have written 16 chapters of my first book and am looking to be published within a year. I know we have lots of authors out there, so reach out to me with advice. I'm all ears!
Carrie Swan Bonvallet
Things are starting to get back to normal for the Bonvallet family. Paul finished up a very well-timed one-year sabbatical in August. He's back to teaching chemistry at The College of Wooster and was recently promoted to full professor. After a few years off, I am back to winemaking and am working for White Timbers Winery in Wadsworth, OH. Our 24th wedding anniversary is coming up in August and our gift will be an empty nest! Our daughter, Violette, is a sophomore at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. And our son, Nathan, will start in the fall at Moravian University, also in Bethlehem, PA. Notice a trend? Both will be playing soccer for their respective universities, so I expect I'll be planning a lot of road trips out east!
Samie Kim Falvey
We are thrilled to announce the birth of our third and final son Bowen Kim Falvey last October. Midlife crisis hopefully complete.
Pia Catton
Still in NYC, but I'm now Director of Development at Battery Dance, a contemporary dance company. Every August, we host an outdoor dance festival in Lower Manhattan, so come see! The company is also known for its story-telling and community-building workshop, Dancing to Connect, which has been shared in more than 60 countries, often in places where people are dealing with trauma or dislocation. In July, we'll be in Houston working with recent immigrants from Afghanistan.
John Koepke
Greetings from the Chicagoland area. Olivia and I are down to 2 kids at home. Grace (17) is finishing up her junior year of high school. The college search has begun as being 6ft 4in, she will play b-ball somewhere!! Josh (12 - 6th grade) continues to play football and hockey. My oldest (20) is chasing his dream playing junior hockey in Salt Lake City where I recently connected with Jeff Bauer ’96 while watching my son play.
Lisa Cafferata
This past year has been a reset for me as it has been for so many. After 18 years with Young Presidents' Organization (YPO), and a short 5 month summer sabbatical, I joined TIGER 21 (a network of ultra high net worth individuals based in NYC) as their new Vice President of Programming. That change has allowed me to spend more time on other activities I am passionate about - led a summer leadership forum at the JFK Presidential Library in Boston, consulted on learning strategy for 50/50 Women on Boards, and advised on strategy for a non-profit start-up, The Knowledge Pledge. I am excited to be traveling again - including a girl’s trip with fellow alum Laura Wessel Cornely and connecting for coffee in San Francisco with Gillian Kneass. My kids are now both in high school (Declan almost 16, and Annika turning 15) - I can't believe we will be starting college tours in the next year! Excited to see everyone at reunion!!
Yuri Bredle
Hey, it's been a minute. Now that I'm going on college visits with my oldest, the thoughts do turn fondly to Kenyon. I'm in Cincinnati, working out of the home office. I don't get up to Gambier as much as I'd like. With three teens, life is all about trying to coordinate schedules and anticipate what's around the bend. My wife, Erica, and I are trying to give them a good launch into the world. I have less free time and more power tools than I did when we were in school. If you're ever in Cinci, look me up.
