Class of 1972 Spring Class Letter
| |
| Dear classmates,
I hope to see many of you back in Gambier this May to celebrate our 50th Reunion at what will certainly be a weekend to remember, since alumni are finally able to reunite on campus again after two years of virtual gatherings.
Last fall, I hope you heard about (and – even better -- supported!) the new Kenyon Access Initiative. We are eight months into our five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. The extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. In further great news, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.
As we approach our Bicentennial, President Sean Decatur, in response to calls from some students, has agreed to consider a new athletics moniker instead of “Lords” and “Ladies.” Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback on this. This letter was finalized before the results were known, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.
This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. They also announced the news that Lisa Schott ’80, who since 2010 has served as managing director of the College’s land trust, the Philander Chase Conservancy (PCC), will step down from that position at the end of June after a nearly 40-year career with Kenyon. This news and more were shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, you may sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.
As summer approaches, Kenyon is preparing to welcome several groups of alumni back to campus. First, more than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, our class along with the Classes of 1970 and 1971) will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, as you know, all alumni are welcome back to campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! PLEASE REGISTER FOR OUR REUNION WEEKEND as soon as possible. We have great things planned: Our Class Dinner will be in Peirce Hall on Thursday, May 26. And there are more ’72-focused gatherings and events throughout the weekend. Alumni from ’70 and ’71, who had to miss in-person reunions because of the pandemic, are returning, and some members of the class of 1973 who are planning their 50th next year will join us as well. Our era at Kenyon will be well represented! I look forward to catch up with you all, relive old memories and share a few laughs together.
All of the excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to support every aspect of students’ experience, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a gift to the Kenyon Fund and (if you have the ability) making an additional gift to our Class of 1972 Unrestricted Endowment Fund in honor of our 50th Reunion. We know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future — not just professionally, but personally. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.
Thank you!
Larry Harbison

John Harr would like to contact Tommy Lynn Fry, Jr. Anyone with contact information for him please email John: jpmn@comcast.net
Jeffrey Wolin: After 4 years of work, my book, Faces of Homelessness was just published by Kehrer Verlag (www.kehrerverlag.com/en/jeffrey-a-wolin-faces-of-homelessness-978-3-96900-057-1). It consists of 42 portraits of homeless individuals living in Chicago and Los Angeles and includes stories about their experiences in their own words included typographically on the photographs. (I began my career as a photographer while at Kenyon using the darkroom in the basement of Peirce Hall and first started working with type at the Pot Hanger Press, also in the basement of Peirce.) An accompanying exhibition opened at Catherine Edelman Gallery in Chicago -- so glad my Old Kenyon suite mate, Les Mikesell ’71 came to the opening. Hope to see my former classmates at our 50th reunion!
Jeff Newton: This past year we have visited my husband's 95 year-old mother in St. Albans, UK several times which means that Robin and I became experts at PCR tests, lateral flow tests, the details of quarantine, and ordering food deliveries from Marks and Spenser's while in lockdown. We did get to fly once in a 787 Dreamliner with more flight staff than passengers - which was quite an experience.
Looking forward to our 50th reunion very much. Rumor has it we may be mask free by then! But, we've heard that before. Stay tuned.
Richard Ripley: Spring is coming soon to the Central Coast of California. Steve Zinder, his wife Chris and their new dog, Chili, stopped by for a visit at the beginning of March on their way to stay with family in Portland, OR. We had a great time showing them around our "hood" with a visit to Jalama Beach, driving through the wine country of the Santa Rita Hills and dinner at the Hitching Post of Sideways fame in Buellton, CA. I am looking forward to our 50th Reunion in Gambier!
Steve Zinder: I don't think I've ever done one of these, so here goes. I got an MS in Microbiology from Colorado State U in '74 (where I fell in love with the mountains and my wife Chris). I got a PhD in Bacteriology from U of Wisconsin in '77 where I worked with Thomas D. Brock, famous for his work with thermophiles (including discovering the bug that makes the enzyme used for PCR reactions, including Covid tests). I did a postdoc at UCLA from '77-'79 where we were almost seduced by southern California living. After that, I spent 41 years as a microbiology professor at Cornell U, specializing in environmental microbiology (we found a bug that detoxifies the solvents PCE and TCE) and microbial diversity, and retired last July 1. I've been still going into work most days, trying to finish up some research and publications. I had a good run, and even got an honorary degree from Kenyon in 2014. I guess all that time in the lab as a Chem major at Kenyon paid off. I'm writing this from Portland, OR. My wife Chris and I just drove here from Ithaca and will stay about 2 months, scoping it out as a place to live part, or all, of the year. On the way here, we visited Rick Ripley and his wife Jane, who now live in Lompoc, CA. We had a great time on the beach in the warm California sun, which sure beats the cold Ithaca sleet. Rick's planning on coming to reunion. The reason we're interested in Portland is that two of our sons are living here. Dan is 40 and was 5 months old when he attended our tenth in '82. He's a city planner, and lives here with his wife Maria and our two adorable granddaughters, Marilyn (named after my mom), who is turning 6 in May, and Carmella, who is turning 3 in April. I missed our 45th, the only 5 year reunion I've ever missed, for Marilyn's first birthday. Our youngest son, Adam, 33, also lives here with his partner Elise, and works for a tech company. Our middle son, John, 35, is a post-doc in molecular biology at Rockefeller U, where his grandfather worked (John went into the family business), and lives in NYC with his partner Julia. So that pretty much sums up my 50 years since graduating. I'm very much looking forward to our reunion and will even miss Marilyn's 6th birthday for it. See you soon.
Nancy Ellis (Peek): The best part of working on our ’72 50th Reunion Planning Committee is its primary goal to contact and engage with as many of our classmates as possible. Our Communication, Fundraising, and Social Weekend Committees have worked hard on this, and we hope we are succeeding through renewed friendships, shared memories, and reminders of the ways in which Kenyon has enriched our lives; but if we have not connected somehow, please know we really want to hear from you. Reach out to any of our committee members—all of our names are listed at the top of this letter. My e-mail address is nancy-ellis@comcast.net
