Sprin 2022 Class Letters

Class of 1969 Spring Class Letter

Dear Classmates,

It’s officially Reunion month on the Hill! Even though this year isn’t a milestone reunion year for us (can you believe it’s our 53rd?), all alumni are welcome back for Reunion Weekend this year (and in the future!) and the fact that alumni are finally able to reunite on campus again after two years of virtual gatherings is something worth celebrating. The sense of isolation that has accompanied the past two years has been challenging to navigate, but having the support of you all, my Kenyon family, has continued to brighten the darkest parts of this pandemic for me — thank you!

Last fall, I hope you heard about (and perhaps supported!) the new Kenyon Access Initiative. We are eight months into our five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. Our extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. In further great news, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.

I'm sure you saw the news from President Sean Decatur this winter that, in response to calls from current students as we approach our Bicentennial, he agreed the time had come to look beyond Lords and Ladies. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process to consider a new athletics moniker. This letter was finalized before the results were known and before the online ZOOM meeting took place (March 22nd) to provide feedback, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.

This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. They also announced the news that Lisa Schott ’80, who since 2010 has served as managing director of the College’s land trust, the Philander Chase Conservancy (PCC), will step down from that position at the end of June after a nearly 40-year career with Kenyon. This news and more was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, I encourage you to sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.

As summer approaches, Kenyon is preparing to welcome several groups of alumni back to campus. First, more than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, as you know, all alumni are welcome back to campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! If you aren’t able to make it back for Reunion this year, I hope you’ll plan to attend one soon.

On a sad note, I don’t know how many of you caught up with the fact that our classmate, Bob Falkenstine (a.k.a. the Falcon) passed away on November 25, 2021, after courageously facing the challenges of B-Cell lymphoma. Please keep Maureen, his wife of 50 years, and the rest of his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Finally, all of the excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience today, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a gift today. We know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future — not just professionally, but personally. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.

Thank you!
Kit Marty

wmlokey@gmail.com
William Lokey – All well in Tacoma, WA. Due to a positive test result in our family, I was not able to get together with Pierce Scranton ’68 when I skied in Sun Valley this winter. Cruise lecture business (thank you Bob Schonfeld) is coming back slowly. Best to all '69 friends and classmates. Jim Hecox, if you ever return for a reunion let me know. Would love to see you again. Lokes

robertfugitt@roadrunner.com
Robert Fugitt – Turning 75! It’s sobering to be this old but hopefully also comes wisdom!? I'm still working as a part time Urologist. I'm not sure why but I guess I still love seeing patients in the office. I miss my old friends at Kenyon and hope all are well.

kkalinowski1@verizon.net
Keith Kalinowski – After visiting Tom and Sonia Greenslade and Kenyon in August, Nancy and I got away again in December to spend 2 vaccinated and boosted weeks in the Caribbean. On the way home, I experienced a “warning” that turned into quadruple bypass surgery on February 4. Recuperating well at home now. We’re hoping to go to Hungary and Germany in May and also attend the Passion Play in Oberammergau. Hi to all Alpha Sigs and Physics majors!

Edgar.Lentz@cox.net
Edgar Lentz – Sharon and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary in July 2021 with our daughters and their families in Colorado.

saevans17@gmail.com
Stacy Evans – Struggling with tremors; no diagnosis for Parkinson's disease. This in addition to ongoing heart disease. I wish all of my classmates well.

plawrason@drlawrason.com
Peter Lawrason - I am continuing to work in Ob Gyn full time in Fairbanks, Alaska. Addie, my youngest, is a freshman at Arizona State in the bachelors nursing program. Drew is studying at The University of Alaska, living in Naples, Florida. Older sons Alex (and his spouse Devonne and twin high schoolers Kelly and Slater) and Brad live in N.J. My older daughter is a physician living in Durango, Co. with her 3 1/2 year old daughter Olivia and husband Josh.

jbul547@gmail.com
Jack Turnbull - Enjoyed the sights and sounds of Asheville, NC Christmas week with the family as we celebrated the holiday and our wedding anniversary. Beautiful Christmas displays at the Biltmore and Grove Park Inn with lots of other families and visitors. Normalcy in our lives is returning, thank heavens!

kit.marty@outlook.com
Kit Marty – Like many others, I came down with the Omicron variant of COVID shortly after Christmas last year. Even though I was fully vaxed and boosted, Omicron didn’t care. It hit me like a ton of bricks, but it’s nice having my own RN (Linda Lee) living in the house. I was down and out for a couple of weeks, but made it through OK and was fully back to my ornery old self after about six weeks. Stay well, everyone!
