Class of 1964 Spring Class Letter
| |
| Dear Classmates,
It’s officially Reunion month on the Hill! Even though this year isn’t a milestone reunion year for us, all alumni are welcome back for Reunion Weekend this year (and in the future!) and the fact that alumni are FINALLY able to reunite on campus again after two years of virtual gatherings is something worth celebrating. The sense of isolation that has accompanied the past two years has been challenging to navigate, but having the support of you all, my Kenyon family, has continued to brighten the darkest parts of this pandemic for me — thank you!
Last fall, I hope you heard about (and perhaps supported!) the new Kenyon Access Initiative. We are eight months into our five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. Our extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. In further great news, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.
Hopefully you saw the news from President Sean Decatur this winter that, in response to calls from students as we approach our Bicentennial, he agreed the time had come to look beyond Lords and Ladies. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process to consider a new athletics moniker. This letter was finalized before the results were known, but you can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest. (Some of us will always remain Lords!)
This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. They also announced the news that Lisa Schott ’80, who since 2010 has served as managing director of the College’s land trust, the Philander Chase Conservancy (PCC), will step down from that position at the end of June after a nearly 40-year career with Kenyon. This news and more was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, I encourage you to sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.
As summer approaches, Kenyon is preparing to welcome several groups of alumni back to campus. First, more than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement taking place on the Hill May 22. On May 26, the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. And then, as you know, all alumni are welcome back to campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! If you aren’t able to make it back for Reunion this year, I hope you’ll plan to attend one soon.
All of the excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, back to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience today, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a gift today. We know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future — not just professionally, but personally. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.
Thank you! Tom Bond

Class of 1964 Spring Notes
| |
John Hattendorf - While icy winds and snow gripped New England, Hattendorf took a week in balmy Barbados to examine 17th and 18th century fortifications and plantations-- as well as sample the ever- present varieties of rum punch. It was the first of several trips he hopes to take in 2022.
Thomas Bond - Still inching toward retirement this coming July. Hoping to start traveling more if COVID finally subsides. We do live near our children and grandchildren which is good. Had dinner with Pete King recently, who I have known since seventh grade.
Edwin McCampbell - Edwin and Vicki McCampbell are enjoying their retirement from medicine and looking forward to the arrival of their new grandson.
David Schmid - This information is provided from a letter received from classmate Henry Moffitt: Henry is living in Columbus, NC; he has been doing some Latin translating and looking into the early history of Christianity in the British Isles. He is now sharpening his yard tools as he looks forward to helping maintain the grounds around the church he attends. He hopes to return to Gambier for the bicentennial.
Tom Collins - Nothing really to report. Thank you for inquiring.
Stephen Goldenberg - In spite of our advancing age, it is great to hear that our class remains busy and active. In my case, I am still an active attorney in both Florida and Massachusetts, and, as well, this year have recently been elected as Vice-President of the Jewish Congregation of Marco Island, as Treasurer of Naples PFLAG, Inc., and as a Trustee of Falmouthport Condominium Trust of Falmouth, Massachusetts. I guess that means it is still too soon to relax and retire!
Barry Jentz - From mid-August to mid-November during each of our four years, Mike Wood threw a tight spiral and spoke with confident authority in the huddle. Great teammate.
William Cross - This has been an interesting year. After retirement as a CIO, I found a fascinating organization of people, the Academy of Senior Professionals at Eckerd College (ASPEC). It is an organization of people from all walks of life who share their experience and knowledge in a rich continuing education program. Additionally, I teach a class or two in Information Technology at both the graduate and undergraduate level just to forcibly keep up, and volunteer at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital. We are happily ensconced in our island home on St. Pete Beach. Retirement is not a bad life.
Joel Kellman - Hello Classmates, I hope you are well. For me, I retired from the law firm I have been part of for about 23 years on December 31, 2021 with mixed emotions but departing the office world wins. It was a great feeling for both me and Betsy, my wife of 55 years. I sit on a number of nonprofit boards in Detroit—an important food bank and a large Detroit community park, as well as serving as a Trustee of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. I expect to increase those activities, along with catching up on some reading, playing some tennis and traveling as time goes by, including an annual fall football weekend in Gambier. As I write this, we are in Arizona and California visiting relatives and enjoying some warm weather in March. I was so saddened with the passing of Mike Wood, a wonderful person and with Judy, close friends in college and in Ann Arbor while we were in graduate school. So let us enjoy life whenever possible and also stay in touch. Joel.
