Sprin 2022 Class Letters

Class of 1961 Spring Class Letter

Dear Classmates,

May is now officially Reunion month on the Hill, and the fact that alumni are FINALLY able to reunite on campus after two years of virtual gatherings is something worth celebrating.  More than 100 members of the Class of 2020 and their families have registered to attend their belated Commencement on May 22, and on May 26 the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 will be kicking off Reunion Weekend a day early with special 50th Reunion programming. Then, as you know, the Class of ’61 and all other alumni are heading back to campus May 27-29 for what promises to be the biggest alumni gathering in the College’s history! Hutch and I hope you’re planning to attend this momentous gathering.

Last fall, you may have heard about the important new Kenyon Access Initiative. The College is eight months into its five-year partnership with the Schuler Education Foundation to increase access to Kenyon for exceptional students with limited resources. The extended Kenyon community has enthusiastically responded by making more than 1,113 gifts to support this unique initiative, helping to create new scholarships that will be awarded to students we are enrolling now. Also on that subject, applications this year hit another record, up 14% over last year.

You may also have seen the news from President Decatur that, in response to calls from students as we approach the Bicentennial, the time has come to look beyond “Lords” and “Ladies” as athletic monikers. Thanks to all of you who have submitted suggestions or other feedback for the process. You can visit kenyon.edu/moniker to learn the latest.

This spring, the College continued its commitment to integrating environmental stewardship into its curriculum, campus operations and campus culture. Stay tuned for details.  In that vein, another announcement more specific to our class is that after a nearly 40-year career with Kenyon our friend Lisa Schott ’80 will step down at the end of June as Managing Director of the Philander Chase Conservancy, the College’s land trust, a post she has held since 2010. This news was shared in Kenyon’s new quarterly Green Newsletter. If you don’t already receive it, I encourage you to sign up for it at bit.ly/Green-Kenyon.

All of the excitement and achievement at Kenyon today can be traced, in part, to our support. Kenyon relies on our gifts to the Kenyon Fund to support every aspect of students’ experience today, from seminars to scholarships. I hope you’ll join me in making a gift today. We know first-hand how a Kenyon education can impact one’s future — not just professionally, but personally. When we support Kenyon’s current and future students, we help make a Kenyon family like ours a possibility for many more.

Thank you!
David Brown

Class of 1961 Spring Notes

Dan Holland - I always knew I would be grateful for attending Kenyon. However it was not until I retired and could compose poetry to my heart’s content (and to the dismay of my Facebook Friends) that I realized the magnitude of my indebtedness to our Alma Mater, and, in particular, to Mr. Ransom, and Dr. Roelofs! I continue to read my poetry every second Thursday each month at the SWAG (Stanton, Waynesboro, Augusta Group). Sensibly they allow me only five minutes! Also I remain active in the Shenandoah Valley Trout Unlimited Chapter as we continue our efforts to restore the once-dead South River back to a self-sustaining trout stream!

Virginia continues to confirm our decision to flee Wisconsin, even though we had snow that lasted on the ground for a week! (The first time in three winters here).

Out of the blue, Patty got a call begging her to teach bassoon at Virginia Tech. So now each week she drives two hours to teach for an hour. She is not complaining. Also the last Waynesboro Symphony Concert was an absolutely triumphal affair on Sunday February 20th.

Her being able to play both bassoon and contrabassoon with such a marvelous orchestra brings great joy to her/us. Incidentally, lest I am accused of exaggeration, the WSO won “The American Prize” as the Best Community Orchestra in America!

Hopefully, we will re-unite in Gambier in May.

David Lenz - As I missed submitting any class notes the last time an opportunity was presented, I will cover news for the past 6 months or so.

This past year Betty and I have spent our time at home, taking care to ensure that we received vaccines as they become available, to include booster shots, and to limit our contacts within the community both for self-preservation and to help reduce the transmission of the Covid-19 virus.

On the brighter side, we did travel to visit our son and his family in California over Labor Day 2021 and then in November 2021 we traveled to visit our daughter and her family in Georgia on our way to a week-long cruise in the Caribbean. As for family visits, it had been 16-22 months since seeing our children and grandchildren so both visits were very welcome events. The cruise was a taste of what we remembered as normal, on a ship that was only carrying 1/3 of its passenger capacity. All went well and it was a welcome change. We are now back at home resuming our quiet existence visiting via Zoom and phone with friends and family. Betty did a revision of a book chapter and I continued to serve as a consultant, so some mental stimulation occurred. As we age in place, we have had to meet a few medical challenges which we are currently addressing, and so far we are still mobile and enjoying our home in Ohio. Eleanor, our cat, continues to provide amusement and frequent reminders that we are here to serve her and not the reverse, which keeps us grounded. I'm sorry to say I will not attend the class reunion in May 2022 in person as we will be on a river cruise in Portugal. I will miss seeing all of you who will attend. I do send all of you greetings and I look forward to 2022 and the return of equanimity in our country.

John Baker - Erie winters are a joy for me – a chance to pursue my new hobby…Snow blowing! I blast the snow from my walks and drive and the next two houses on my block. Get lots of cookies that way!

Otherwise, still “shooting” for several nonprofits in Erie. I hope the “Covid-cancelled” events will return this summer. I miss the free drinks!!
