Kenyon Class of 2013 Fall Class Letter

Dear classmates,

I always look forward to receiving this letter and learning about what’s been going on with each other’s lives since we left the Hill (almost 10 years ago!). I hope you do too – you’ll find the notes below, but I also have some exciting updates about what’s new on campus this year:

This semester, 12 members of the Class of 2026 were able to enroll as the direct result of donor support for the Kenyon Access Initiative (KAI), a vital scholarship effort to increase access for low-income students. We’re only just getting started and aim to enroll 50 students each year through KAI, in addition to other robust financial aid. This additional diversity in backgrounds and lived experiences will further enrich daily life on campus.

Chalmers Library in the West Quad has quickly become a hub for such connections day and night. Its neighbor Lowell House, home to admissions and financial aid and named for Pulitzer Prize winning poet Robert T.S. Lowell IV ’40, is also now open. Oden Hall, future home to social sciences and named for former president Robert Oden, will open for instruction next year. The 261-space underground parking garage for visitors and employees — with EV charging too — is already helping to ease congestion in the Village without disrupting the beauty of Gambier we all remember so fondly.

This year students will also soon have access to a dining option in “downtown” Gambier, when Peirce Express opens in a space under the Gambier Deli. This space will also be home some evenings to a student-run bar known as Flats, helping to provide a non-residence nightlife option. Look for more about both of these in an upcoming issue of Kenyon News Digest.

To further support all students, the College increased the budget for the Student Success Fund — emergency grants for which any student can apply. They also welcomed Dr. Lynn Hampton to serve in the newly created Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion position, providing additional leadership to the daily efforts of ODEI and partnering with Dean Chris Kennerly so he can extend his reach across campus with DEI efforts.

In other news, the Music Department is celebrating its 75th year. Alumni Council is developing an updated version of the Kenyon songbook (Kenyon has a songbook!) which will be viewable online soon and distributed at Reunion Weekend during the all-class sing.

If you haven’t saved the date for our Reunion Weekend, please do! I hope to see you on the Hill May 26-28. I was recently on campus to get started on the planning, and we have some great stuff in the works. We’re sharing reunion weekend with all the other 3 and 8 classes as well as Chamber Singers, Peeps, and K80s.

I hope these updates have you feeling wistful about our own time at Kenyon. I invite you to turn that nostalgia into action with a gift to help make all this possible! Gifts to the Kenyon Fund can be directed toward enrolling the next high-achieving group of students through the Kenyon Access Initiative, broader scholarships and financial aid efforts, athletics, one of the College’s many green centers and more. Please consider making your alma mater and today’s Kenyon students a philanthropic priority this year by giving online at gift.kenyon.edu.

I hope you’ve enjoyed hearing the news from the College this fall. I have certainly enjoyed (as always) hearing from those of you who submitted class notes for this letter (see below). I encourage folks who haven’t updated us with one recently to consider submitting a quick life update for the next batch of notes in the spring.

See you soon (well, in May anyway)!

Class of 2013 Fall Notes

Tommy Brown and his wife Michaela enjoyed being in Gambier this September for Alumni Council. It was Michaela's first time on-campus, and Tommy loved showing her what a special place Kenyon is. Sure, to non-Kenyonites we seem a bit like a cult -- but nowhere beats Gambier in the fall.

Spencer Carlson:
Hi everyone. I am starting my pre-doc internship in Clinical Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies' wellness center. It brings me back to Kenyon's amazing wellness center and the remarkable professionals who helped me through various challenges. Sending the whole class of 2013 best wishes and healthy hearts and minds.

Colleen Damerell: It's been a wild time to work in abortion, but my clinic is still providing care in Cleveland. We're also the first independent abortion clinic with a staff union! I'm proud to be a union member and I urge Kenyon to recognize K-SWOC. I also recently joined the inaugural board of the Northeast Ohio Worker Center and have been honored with opportunities to write and speak publicly about the intersection of reproductive justice and the labor movement. If you want information or need care, INeedAnAbortion.com is a great resource...spread it far and wide!

Paul Dougherty: Solidarity with KSWOC from a Western Montana Union Member.

Kenny Fedorko: I've been hanging out here in Denver, CO, hiking, climbing and playing volleyball as well as acting and writing. I had one particularly eventful week where I got caught in a thunder and lightning storm at the peak of a 14,000 ft. mountain and, later that week, a bat got into my apartment and flew around my kitchen for nearly half an hour. The scariest part is the bat disappeared - I have no idea how it got out. Maybe via a vent? Terrifying - it could reappear at any moment!

Sarah Lass: I am back in Northampton, MA working as Lecturer of Dance at Smith College and as an independent editor for academic publications. I also got engaged in August!

Ariana McSweeney: I switched my major from Psychology to History during the fall of my senior year at Kenyon, and after years of working as an architectural conservator/historian while serving as a support group volunteer, I've decided to switch back. I've moved to Edinburgh, Scotland to pursue a conversion course (similar to a post-bacc) in Psychology.

Morgan Peele: I successfully defended my dissertation (finally!) and received my PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. I recently began my new role as a Senior Data Scientist in oncology analytics at Merck where I focus on prostate cancer.

Willie Plaschke:
I married the love of my life in June in Kansas City, with Kenny Fedorko, Dan Katz, Nathan Huey, and John Rancatore ’14 standing alongside me. We were so glad to see some other dear Kenyon friends make the trip. Later that summer, Alisha and I traveled to Italy, Greece, and Turkey on our honeymoon. It was the best two weeks ever. We are back in KC now, and have our guest loft all set up for any Kenyon Owls or Gunderlings who want to visit!

I am still working as a content editor for a tech company focused on lawyers and law firms. On evenings and weekends, I am (slowly but surely) blogging on my website, releasing music, and starting a meditation practice. Currently reading Eat to Love by Jenna Hollenstein, The Great Passage by Shion Miura, and Invitation to a Beheading by Vladimir Nabokov. You know, the usual.

Ashan Rodriguez: I just graduated from the Kennedy School this May after an extended program due to COVID. Also just started a job in public sector consulting, even though I'm itching to already go back into the international development world. I've also enjoyed the digital nomad life for the last couple of months, but likely settling into Cambridge, MA early next year.

Hannah Saiz:
After a whirlwind three years in northern WI getting a tiny D3 swim & dive program up and running, I've transitioned to city living in Boston. (And apparently there are a lot of y'all who live around here/come through here.) I'm the Associate Head Coach with D1 Boston University and enjoying working with smart kiddos. Also, my best friend & I (very recently) started a swim coaching podcast, so if anyone wants to pretend to listen to it on Spotify or google podcasts you're welcome to do so: Force in the Water.

Sara (Kupper) Samovalov’s second daughter, Alice, was born on July 14. Big sister Hazel, 3, just started preschool. Sara is now doing her best to maintain her sanity with two kids in the house.

Olivia Sison: Hi, all! Almost a year living in Quito now with my partner and our two doggos. If you're in town, let's get together! In other news, still working in animal welfare as an animal behavior consultant, and earlier this year I started a new role as the Events Director for the IAABC or "Int'l Assoc. of Animal Behavior Consultants" Foundation. If anyone is involved in related endeavors, always feel free to connect with me. Cheers and love always, Oli.

Tina Taliercio lives in Salt Lake City with her boyfriend Matt and her cats Waffles, T-Dog, and Olive. She recently completed training as a B-737 pilot for Alaska Airlines and is looking forward to getting some Hawaii layovers. She spends her days off camping and hiking around Utah and hanging out with her telescope.
