Kenyon Class of 2011 Fall Class Letter
| |
| Dear classmates,
A few updates from the Hill before the main show of this letter – updates from our classmates’ lives:
This semester, 12 members of the Class of 2026 were able to enroll as the direct result of donor support for the Kenyon Access Initiative (KAI), a vital scholarship effort to increase access for low-income students. We’re only just getting started and aim to enroll 50 students each year through KAI, in addition to other robust financial aid. This additional diversity in backgrounds and lived experiences will further enrich daily life on campus.
Chalmers Library in the West Quad has quickly become a hub for such connections day and night. Its neighbor Lowell House, home to admissions and financial aid and named for Pulitzer Prize winning poet Robert T.S. Lowell IV ’40, is also now open. Oden Hall, future home to social sciences and named for former president Robert Oden, will open for instruction next year.
In a seeming full-circle a Peirce Express option will open again but improved from the days when it was in the library. Peirce Express will open in a space under the Gambier Deli. This space will also be home some evenings to a student-run bar known as Flats, helping to provide a non-residences nightlife option. Look for more about both of these in an upcoming issue of Kenyon News Digest.
To further support all students, the College increased the budget for the Student Success Fund — emergency grants for which any student can apply. They also welcomed Dr. Lynn Hampton to serve in the newly created Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion position, providing additional leadership to the daily efforts of ODEI and partnering with Dean Chris Kennerly so he can extend his reach across campus with DEI efforts.
In other news, the Music Department is celebrating its 75th year. Alumni Council is developing an updated version of the Kenyon songbook (Kenyon has a songbook!) which will be viewable online soon and distributed at Reunion Weekend during the all-class sing. If you haven’t saved the date yet for Reunion Weekend, remember that all alumni are welcome to attend May 26-28.
I hope you’re now feeling wistful about our own time at Kenyon. I invite you to turn that nostalgia into action with a gift to help make all this possible! Gifts to the Kenyon Fund can be directed toward enrolling the next high-achieving group of students through the Kenyon Access Initiative, broader scholarships and financial aid efforts, athletics, one of the College’s many green centers and more. Please consider making your alma mater and today’s Kenyon students a philanthropic priority this year by giving online at gift.kenyon.edu.
I hope you’ve enjoyed hearing the news from the College this fall. I have certainly enjoyed (as always) hearing from those of you who submitted class notes for this letter (see below).
Thank you!
Kara Pellegrino (they/them)

Nick Loud premiers our notes with news of his film premier: “This past summer we premiered a narrative feature film called Quicksand at the Traverse City Film Festival that I produced in northern Michigan with my brother (and fellow Kenyon alum), Chris Loud ’06. Since then, we have gone on to present the film at the Hell's Half Mile Festival in Bay City, Michigan and we are especially excited to screen the film at the Austin Film Festival in late October/early November. We hope to make it to a number of additional festivals later this year and early 2023, so keep an eye out for it!”
Mike Beck writes “After the briefest of courtships, Joy Leaman and I got hitched on a whim in her motherland i.e. Scotland! We had an epic weekend in Pitlochry, a small town in the lower highlands, capped off by a night of ceilidh dancing and scotch at Blair Castle.
Shoutout to Kenyon fam that made the trek: Trina Rennie (bridesmaid), Chanel & Harrison Scott (groomsmen), Brandon Ventling + Jenna, Michelle & Miggy Barrera, Ryan O'Connor & Liz Jacobs ’12, Gaby Koenig, Hannah Kramer, Jenny (Fitzgerald) & JJ Hoeffler, Christine & McNeil Parker '10 and the even more recently married Eliza & Will VandenBerg '10! Upon return from the festivities, we immediately moved into my mom’s basement because that’s what mature, independent and married adults do.”
Further wedding news comes in from Brendan Coyne who got married this summer and was lucky to have Kenyon friends Kyle Davis, Jon Weil, Adam Sendor, Ramelle Brown ’13, Lizzie Leonard ’13, and Rob Carpenter ’10 there to celebrate!
Wedding bells toll on for Suzanne Rohrback who writes in to say “Since the pandemic I've helped launch a COVID diagnostic, bought a house, adopted a second cat, and married my partner of 8+ years. I'm still working at Illumina, now as a Senior Staff Bioinformatics Scientist, leading collaborative teams developing cutting edge multi-omic NGS assays. Feel free to hit me up if anyone is around San Diego!”
And nuptials don’t end there; Hannah Withers shares “I'm still living in Portland, writing fiction, and working in tech. The big news is that I had a total blast getting married in Missoula, Montana this past May! While it was unfortunately the same weekend as our Kenyon reunion, I was lucky enough to have a small KC reunion of my own in Montana, with a number of good friends from the Hill there with me, to crack some cans and celebrate my wedding to my first husband, Jeff.”
| |
Confirming attendance at that wedding, Liza Chabot writes in, “Had a great spring and summer despite loss. The highlight was a Kenyon reunion of sorts at Hannah Withers' May wedding in Missoula, MT. I got to reconnect with so many Kenyon graduates and it was a real delight. The rest remains the same: living and working in Durham, NC as a Scrum Master (a people and process coach) at Fidelity. Diving back into fiber art and weaving now that I have a studio again. And celebrating my stepson turning 13 in September (pinch me). Still spending about 1/2 my time in my garden and the other 1/2 daydreaming about two upcoming trips to visit my partner's family in Croatia--our first since the pandemic.”
Other exciting travel news comes in from Victoria Lederer – “Nothing big to report. When I'm not busy working, I'm gravel biking or triathlon racing. But my races are taking me to cool places as I get to compete at the 2022 Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii on October 6th. Looking forward to some fun in the sun. Hope all are doing well!”
Beyond travel there have been some relocations, Bryn Stole writes, “recently moved once again, this time from Baltimore to Berlin (Germany), as I continue my longstanding commitment to living an utterly rootless peripatetic life. I’ll be working here as a freelance journalist after leaving my most recent job with The Baltimore Sun this past spring. Look me up if you’re passing through!”
Nicholas Severyn appears to also be relocating - “I recently finished my fellowship in neonatology at Indiana University in June and have since accepted a faculty position at the University of Kentucky as a neonatologist. My wife and I are enjoying our new home in Lexington and just celebrated our son's 2nd birthday here on September 11th.”
Moving back towards the Hill, Sasha Fanny-Holston shares “I moved to Mount Vernon in May. I’m still adjusting to life in the country, but I’m loving passing only 2 traffic lights (and several deer) to/from campus! Outside of work, I’ve been going to yoga class, knitting a temperature blanket (look it up on Google), and hanging out with fellow alums and colleagues. Can’t believe I’ve been back at Kenyon for over a year - time flies while you’re having fun!”
Laura Paul announces “In July 2022, I wrapped up my postdoctoral researcher position with the University of Delaware and began a new role as a Research Agricultural Economist with the US Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service. I'm part of the Rural Economy Branch and my research will focus on rural community sustainability and resilience in the face of climate change. My position is fully remote, so I'm staying in Delaware for the time being!”
Making changes in work is Marina Prado-Steiman who says “Hey all! I'm so happy to report that I'm now an attorney at the University of Florida! I've been working in the Student Legal Services Department for six months, and I love it! In SLS, I provide free legal representation to all UF students. This summer, I went to the National Student Legal Services conference in Santa Fe, New Mexico and fulfilled a lifelong dream of going to the interactive art exhibit, Meow Wolf. My wife, Nicole, works at a nonprofit organization and provides exemplary legal representation to survivors of domestic violence. Last year, we bought our first home together, and it feels wonderful to improve on something that's ours. We're taking a much-needed vacation to Mexico in December, and I'm looking forward to it. Hope you're all doing well!”
Back to PDX for news from Lauren Metzger who, with husband Kaleb Keyserling ’09 “had a busy year with the birth of our daughter, Jacqueline (“Jac”) in late January. She is learning new stuff every day and it has been fun to see her grow and explore! She is already a great friend to our French bulldog, Magnus. She got to visit with Ken Noguchi ’10 this summer and we have plans for her to meet Kara Pellegrino in October.”
********
I am thrilled to be only a few weeks away from visiting Lauren and so happy to say that post-doctoral research on the part of her husband brought Lisa Vaughan closer towards my area of the world in time for her to share “My husband and I are expecting a baby girl in early 2023 :)” Till the spring, be well! Kara
