Kenyon Class of 2008 Fall Class Letter

Dear classmates,

It is hard to believe but May 2023 will be our 15th college reunion! It is wonderful to hear about career developments, family milestones, and stay connected to one another even when we are far from the Hill. The reunion planning committee is looking forward to seeing many of you in May. If you are not able to make it, consider making a donation now (any size is appreciated) to reconnect with the college and help us reach our Class of 2008 giving goal!

Here is just a small snapshot of where your Kenyon gift can go: this semester, 12 members of the Class of 2026 were able to enroll as the direct result of donor support for the Kenyon Access Initiative (KAI), a vital scholarship effort to increase access for low-income students. We’re only just getting started and aim to enroll 50 students each year through KAI, in addition to other robust financial aid. This additional diversity in backgrounds and lived experiences will further enrich daily life on campus.

Chalmers Library in the West Quad has quickly become a hub for such connections day and night. Its neighbor Lowell House, home to admissions and financial aid and named for Pulitzer Prize winning poet Robert T.S. Lowell IV ’40, is also now open. Oden Hall, future home to social sciences and named for former president Robert Oden, will open for instruction next year. The 261-space underground parking garage for visitors and employees — with EV charging, naturally — is already helping to ease congestion in the Village without disrupting the beauty of Gambier we all remember so fondly.

This year students will also soon have access to a dining option in “downtown” Gambier, when Peirce Express opens in a space under the Gambier Deli. (Shout out to all who remember eating in Gund Dining Hall!) This space will also be home some evenings to a student-run bar known as Flats, helping to provide a non-residences nightlife option. Look for more about both of these in an upcoming issue of Kenyon News Digest.

To further support all students, the College increased the budget for the Student Success Fund — emergency grants for which any student can apply. They also welcomed Dr. Lynn Hampton to serve in the newly created Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion position, providing additional leadership to the daily efforts of ODEI and partnering with Dean Chris Kennerly so he can extend his reach across campus with DEI efforts.

In other news, the Music Department is celebrating its 75th year. Alumni Council is developing an updated version of the Kenyon songbook (Kenyon has a songbook!) which will be viewable online soon and distributed at Reunion Weekend during the all-class sing. If you haven’t saved the date for our Reunion Weekend, please do! I hope to see you on the Hill May 26-28.

I hope you’re now feeling wistful about our own time at Kenyon. I invite you to turn that nostalgia into action with a gift to help make all this possible! Gifts to the Kenyon Fund can be directed toward enrolling the next high-achieving group of students through the Kenyon Access Initiative, broader scholarships and financial aid efforts, athletics, one of the College’s many green centers and more. Please consider making your alma mater and today’s Kenyon students a philanthropic priority this year by giving online at gift.kenyon.edu.

I hope you’ve enjoyed hearing the news from the College this fall. I have certainly enjoyed (as always) hearing from those of you who submitted class notes for this letter (see below). I encourage folks who haven’t updated us with one recently to consider submitting a quick life update for the next batch of notes in the spring.

Thank you!
Gwen Faulkner

Class of 2008 Fall Notes

Alex Kerr: Alex, who had worked in the sports industry after grad school for Monumental Sports in Washington DC (NHL Capitals, NBA Wizards, WNBA Mystics, eSports Team Liquid), started his own tech company at the beginning of 2020 called Trajektory. Trajektory sits at the intersection of technology, analytics, and sports, helping professional sports organizations evaluate and quantify their sponsorship impact. Trajektory was named the top tech startup in Chicago in 2021 by TechInMotion, and works with teams from around the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS and NWSL. Alex also got married in October of 2021 to his better half (she's Canadian). They recently bought a house in the Chicago suburbs along with their Italian sheepdog Mozzie.
Anna Livak Hale: Winding down 2022 is a time of harvesting seeds sown as far back as my time at Kenyon. This High Holiday season marked the first time our synagogue has had a Rabbi in many years, and I am pleased to say I chaired the search committee to find and hire him - something I likely never would have done were it not for the friendships and teaching of Jessie Rubenstein and Karen (Singerman) Martin during our time together on the Hill. My son, Ezra, turns 2 and will join his big sister, Eve, at preschool in November, and when everyone remarks on his astonishing vocabulary, I cheerfully note my contributions as a former English major. Professionally, I have embarked on a new chapter and recently began a certificate program in Traumatic Stress Studies, while working as a virtual mental health therapist for Carbon Health. I remain grateful for my time at Kenyon, and look forward to the possibility of reconnecting with old friends at an Alumni weekend.

Gwen Faulkner: I survived pandemic teaching and am in my twelfth year as an elementary school teacher. I am looking forward to a Low Lew Girls reunion later this month with: Allison Glasser, Carrie Spitz, Sarah Fraiman, Lizzy Gee, Kelsey Raines, AnnaLaura Scandrett, and Elizabeth Peckham.

Hylton Early: Our family of four has moved from Kamas, Utah (outside of Park City) to Raleigh, North Carolina. We're all excited to be closer to family and my wife and I are looking forward to reconnecting with old friends from the Carolinas. The girls started kindergarten this year, and I will continue working with Merrill Lynch now out of the Raleigh office. I'm hoping to make it to Gambier a bit more frequently now that it is within driving distance!

Kate (Hellman) Miller: After a challenging breastfeeding experience with my first baby, I was inspired to leave my job in software marketing and start a company called Mighty Milk. We offer non-judgmental online breastfeeding and pumping classes for new and expectant parents. I teamed up with an amazing Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) who leads the classes. I'd love to connect with any other alums who work with prenatal/postpartum families, or any expectant parents. And I'm happy to report that breastfeeding is going very smoothly with my second little one :)

Kathryn Chiasson: My husband Nick and I welcomed our second son, Eric, in July of this year. Our older son, Will, is doing quite well in his new role as big brother!

Marc Christian: Took the big leap and left coaching to start a consulting company, IntelliSport Analytics, which supports sports leaders using research to make informed decisions and organizational change. Starting my third year teaching sports ethics at Georgetown University and also conducting research for The Wharton Business School. Recently fulfilled a bucket list of seeing Metallica and O.A.R. back-to-back nights in Pittsburgh with '08 classmates Josh Mitchell, Andy Berger and Jake Hoyson, as well as Rachel Berger ’11 and my wife Melissa.

Rachel Dickson: The documentary I produced, Let the Little Light Shine, will air on national PBS on December 12th.

Shannon Deoul and Andy (Pankin) are doing well in LA. They were lucky enough to see some Kenyon friends in different time zones this summer, including Joey Kanengiser at his wedding, and Kate (Hellman) Miller and her adorable kids. Shannon is now in her 12th year at RazPR, a boutique PR agency, and Andy is currently working on the reality show Expedition Bigfoot on Discovery+. Watch to see if they finally find him!

Timothy Lane: I hope everyone is doing well! I am still living and thriving in the world of entertainment.
