Kenyon Class of 2004 Fall Class Letter
| |
| Dear Class of 2004,
If you’re like me, we look forward to this letter each fall to learn about what’s going on in our classmates’ lives. It’s also a great opportunity to get news from the Hill. Trust me, there’s great stuff to share:
This semester, 12 members of the Class of 2026 were able to enroll as the direct result of donor support for the Kenyon Access Initiative (KAI), a vital scholarship effort to increase access for low-income students. We’re only just getting started and aim to enroll 50 students each year through KAI, in addition to other robust financial aid. This additional diversity in backgrounds and lived experiences will further enrich daily life on campus.
Chalmers Library in the West Quad has quickly become a hub for such connections day and night. Its neighbor Lowell House, home to admissions and financial aid and named for Pulitzer Prize winning poet Robert T.S. Lowell IV ’40, is also now open. Oden Hall, future home to social sciences and named for former president Robert Oden, will open for instruction next year. The 261-space underground parking garage for visitors and employees — with EV charging, naturally — is already helping to ease congestion in the Village without disrupting the beauty of Gambier we all remember so fondly.
This year students will also soon have access to a dining option in “downtown” Gambier, when Peirce Express opens in a space under the Gambier Deli. (Shout out to all who remember eating in Gund Dining Hall!) This space will also be home some evenings to a student-run bar known as Flats, helping to provide a non-residences nightlife option. Look for more about both of these in an upcoming issue of Kenyon News Digest.
To further support all students, the College increased the budget for the Student Success Fund — emergency grants for which any student can apply. They also welcomed Dr. Lynn Hampton to serve in the newly created Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion position, providing additional leadership to the daily efforts of ODEI and partnering with Dean Chris Kennerly so he can extend his reach across campus with DEI efforts.
In other news, the Music Department is celebrating its 75th year. Alumni Council is developing an updated version of the Kenyon songbook (Kenyon has a songbook!) which will be viewable online soon and distributed at Reunion Weekend during the all-class sing. If you haven’t saved the date yet for Reunion Weekend, remember that all alumni are welcome to attend May 26-28. And, make sure to plan to attend our 20th reunion–how?!--next year, when we’ll celebrate Kenyon’s Bicentennial!
I hope you’re now feeling wistful about our own time at Kenyon. I invite you to turn that nostalgia into action with a gift to help make all this possible! Gifts to the Kenyon Fund can be directed toward enrolling the next high-achieving group of students through the Kenyon Access Initiative, broader scholarships and financial aid efforts, athletics, one of the College’s many green centers and more. Please consider making your alma mater and today’s Kenyon students part of your philanthropy this year by giving online at gift.kenyon.edu.
Now that you have enjoyed hearing the news from the College, let’s hear from our classmates who submitted class notes for this letter (see below). I encourage anyone who hasn't updated us with a class note recently (guilty!) to consider submitting a quick life update for the next batch of notes in the spring.
Thank you! Annie Higby Ellsworth and the 2004 Class Agents

Katie (Jackson) Cannon: The population of our farm increased by about 40,003 since our last class letter. Brian Cannon '05 and I now have 4 hives of bees (roughly 10,000 bees each) and just got 3 sheep! We have been fascinated watching the hives progress through the season and are now assisting them in preparing for winter. The sheep are American Tunis, which is a heritage breed known for its hardiness and sturdy-yet-soft medium wool.
We have loved living back in Gambier, and are now helping to re-start the Kenyon Pealers, which have been on hiatus since the pandemic. Once again the church bells ring out every Friday in a free concert, offering everything from Pachelbel's Canon in D to the Star Wars Imperial March.
Diana Carroll: Diana took a big leap last fall and moved over to England with her wife, Sarah Lamming, to be with Sarah’s family in Lincolnshire. Their plans to stay are open-ended, as they gradually adjust to Sarah living with severely disabling chronic health issues. Diana is taking a career break from ministry as an Episcopal priest and focusing, for the time being, on writing, tending her late father-in-law’s garden, supporting Sarah, and volunteering at an alpaca rescue sanctuary. She’s also trying to figure out what kind of paid employment might fit into the current shape of her life. Is this the year she finally follows in the footsteps of so many prestigious Kenyon grads and trains as a barista? Stay tuned!
Erin Billie (Cooper) Carter: I live in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio with my husband, 5 year old daughter, and 3 year old son. I have taken a step back from my group Mental Health Practice and seeing patients as a Psychologist. Instead, I have been pouring more energy into advocating for Prader Willi Syndrome, the genetic, life-threatening rare disease that my daughter was born with. In September, I traveled to DC to speak with members of Congress and their staffers on the Hill about legislation that could help the rare disease community and open doors for a potential treatment for PWS. This is a new and deeply personal venture for me and I'm so thankful for the help of fellow alums Jen Judson and David Donadio ’03 for their guidance, expertise, and friendship. If anyone out there has a personal connection with an elected official that may be interested in helping us, please reach out, my daughter's life depends on it!
Annie Higby Ellsworth: Hi everyone! I’m in my 15th year in the Development Office and continuing to enjoy the Gambier community from a staff perspective. It’s always fun to see our fellow alumni who work at the College or who live in the area, many of whom have kids who are friends with my daughters, ages 12 and 8. We have two labs who frequent the scene shop in the Bolton for the Kenyon students to enjoy some puppy therapy. (By the way, first year students were born the year we graduated from Kenyon. Yup. It’s happened.) Always let me know if you’re on campus or in the area!
AJ Franz: It's been a busy year, with a lot more excitement to come! In March I completed two years working as the Deputy Executive Assistant to Commander, US THIRD Fleet and began the submarine Prospective Commanding Officer training pipeline. I spent three months in DC brushing up on nuclear reactor operations, during which the highlight was hanging out with Eric and Emily Kahn and their two awesome kiddos. I then spent two months honing tactical and weapons employment skills in Hawaii at the Submarine Command Course. Finally, I spent a couple weeks at Headquarters learning who's who and how the machine works. After six months it is great to be back home in San Diego with Erin '06 and our three kids. It's hard to believe our oldest is now in middle school! The fun doesn't stop, as we move to the tropical paradise of Guam in December, and I take command of the attack submarine USS JEFFERSON CITY (SSN 759) in the spring. If anyone is looking to get away from it all, come visit!
Dawn (Sokolowski) Gardiner: We are all doing well! My husband and I have 4 children ages 10, 8, 4 and 2. We enjoy homeschooling and are able to participate in a weekly educational group in which I teach the science classes for children age 4 to 11. My husband is happy with his job, and we are healthy. We wish you all the best!
Adam Lavitt: My husband Alex and I moved to Philadelphia at the end of July to be closer to his family, and for two exciting new jobs. Alex returned to his rabbinical school as faculty, a sweet homecoming - and I am working as Director of Program Design and Facilitation for an organization called the Jewish Studio Project, which cultivates creativity as a Jewish practice for spiritual connection and social transformation. This role allows me to bring my spiritual care work into a totally new and exciting arena. I'll be offering (free!) weekly programs online starting in November - maybe I'll see some of you there! Working remotely is a big adjustment for me after working as a chaplain these last many years, but I'm enjoying establishing a routine for myself and using all the time I had been commuting for other things!
James Lewis: Is 2018, Rachel and I were asked to switch to a new congregation where I serve on the body of elders. For the last 3 years, this role has taken on a new meaning as I worked with fellow elders to provide practical and spiritual support to fellow Jehovah's Witnesses during the pandemic. Doing this work has been one of the greatest accomplishments and privileges of my life.
Daniel Scharff: Daniel was hired as the CEO for Machu Picchu Energy, craft organic energy drinks with a strong social mission, based in Santa Monica, CA.
Sarah (Meadow) Walsh: Sarah and Eamon Walsh '02 and their daughter Ziva are coming up on 5 years living in the DC area! Though the pandemic has limited some of their opportunities to explore everything the Capital City has to offer in terms of museums and culinary adventures, they have tried to make the most of the hiking and biking trails and numerous outdoor cultural festivals. In addition to the two black cats who entered their lives at Halloween in 2020 (a mom and daughter dubbed Midnight and Moon), last December they welcomed another four-legged family member, a rescue mutt named Maisy. She has added to the chaos, of course, but she's such an affectionate sweetheart that they are willing to forgive her for chewing up anything and everything she can get her paws on. Here are pictures of our dog, Maisy, and the cats Midnight and Moon.
