Kenyon Class of 2002 Fall Class Letter
| |
| Dear classmates,
On May 27 this past spring, 77 of our classmates made their way back to Gambier for our 20-year reunion. Many of them wandered into the Village Inn that Friday night where they met up with reunion committee members Cary Snyder and Sandy Bryant who said it felt like almost no time had passed and that everyone was so warm and friendly and reconnected so immediately, it could have been any Friday night in 2002 (just with a few more wrinkles and gray hairs!)
Some highlights of the weekend were seeing Sarah Longwell receive a much-deserved standing ovation after her panel on the state of American democracy with congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher ’97, flipping through our old Facebook, and enjoying happy hour and lawn games on Saturday afternoon on the South Quad. You can check out some photos of the weekend below.
In other news from Gambier:
This semester, 12 members of the Class of 2026 were able to enroll as the direct result of donor support for the Kenyon Access Initiative (KAI), a vital scholarship effort to increase access for low-income students. We’re only just getting started and aim to enroll 50 students each year through KAI, in addition to other robust financial aid. This additional diversity in backgrounds and lived experiences will further enrich daily life on campus.
Chalmers Library in the West Quad has quickly become a hub for such connections day and night. Its neighbor Lowell House, home to admissions and financial aid and named for Pulitzer Prize winning poet Robert T.S. Lowell IV ’40, is also now open. Oden Hall, future home to social sciences and named for former president Robert Oden, will open for instruction next year. The 261-space underground parking garage for visitors and employees — with EV charging, naturally — is already helping to ease congestion in the Village without disrupting the beauty of Gambier we all remember so fondly.
This year students will also soon have access to a dining option in “downtown” Gambier, when Peirce Express opens in a space under the Gambier Deli. This space will also be home some evenings to a student-run bar known as Flats, helping to provide a non-residences nightlife option. Look for more about both of these in an upcoming issue of Kenyon News Digest.
To further support all students, the College increased the budget for the Student Success Fund — emergency grants for which any student can apply. They also welcomed Dr. Lynn Hampton to serve in the newly created Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion position, providing additional leadership to the daily efforts of ODEI and partnering with Dean Chris Kennerly so he can extend his reach across campus with DEI efforts.
In other news, the Music Department is celebrating its 75th year. Alumni Council is developing an updated version of the Kenyon songbook which will be viewable online soon and distributed at next year’s Reunion Weekend during the all-class sing. If you haven’t saved the date yet for Reunion Weekend, remember that all alumni are welcome to attend May 26-28.
If you’re now feeling wistful about our own time at Kenyon, we invite you to turn that nostalgia into action with a gift to help make all this possible. Gifts to the Kenyon Fund can be directed toward enrolling the next high-achieving group of students through the Kenyon Access Initiative, broader scholarships and financial aid efforts, athletics, one of the College’s many green centers and more. Please consider making your alma mater and today’s Kenyon students a philanthropic priority this year by giving online at gift.kenyon.edu.
I hope you’ve enjoyed hearing the news from the College this fall. I enjoyed hearing from those of you who submitted class notes for this letter (see below). I encourage folks who haven’t updated us with one recently to consider submitting a quick life update for the next batch of notes in the spring.
Thank you,
Hilary Hodge

And now some news from our classmates:
Rebecca Capasso has returned to the Bellevue Hospital Center where she is now the Assistant Director of Inpatient Psychiatry and an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the NYU School of Medicine. It has been quite a transition for her to return to hospital work after the pandemic! Her daughters continue to grow - both physically and in confidence -and they still love living in New York City.
Dana Whitley recently relocated to the Columbus, Ohio suburbs where she is thrilled to have a fresh start after 17 years in Washington, D.C. She has shifted her career from grassroots advocacy and healthcare policy to working as an editor for policy, program, and business reports, and documents. She’s so grateful for remote working, reduced stress, and a better life balance.
Emily Cole says that after trying out most of the New England states on for size, she’s finally found herself settled in Connecticut. She’s lived there for the past 5 years with her husband Ray, a professor of sport management, and their 6-year-old daughter Corinne, an avid chicken chaser. She’s spent most of the past 5 years working for American Farmland Trust as the New England Deputy Director, until this past May when she was appointed by the current administration to serve as the USDA Farm Service Agency State Executive Director. This work is far from where she thought her chemistry major would take her but working to support and maintain small agriculture through the turmoil caused by the pandemic has been very rewarding (and plenty challenging).
Cheshe Dow is busy chasing chickens, too! She has a farm in Botswana with chickens, ducks, goats, sheep, and 10 dogs, and she recently started a fruit orchard. She co-owns and runs a K-12 school, The Dow Academy, and hopes it will someday evolve into a liberal arts school. Her school welcomes interns and fellows and anyone who is passionate about its mission.
Monica Cure can't believe it’s been five years since she came to Romania on a Fulbright and ended up staying. She’s excited to report that the first novel she translated, The Censor's Notebook by Moldovan-Romanian writer Liliana Corobca, is coming out in October with Seven Stories Press.
James Greenwood loved seeing so many of you at reunion this May! He’s starting his third year as the Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, OH. He was just on campus a few weeks ago volunteering as an alumni rep on a committee working on supporting student emotional health and suicide prevention on campus. He recently published an article in Independent School Magazine on how leaders must address the challenges DEI practitioners experience today.
Curt Foxx and his wife were delighted to welcome their fourth child on July 5th, a boy named Casey. He joins Evan (11), Emma (8), and Rowan (3). Curt recently retired from coaching after 24 years and took a new career with NCSA as a recruiting specialist. He’s happy to report everyone is doing well in Los Angeles!
Russell Carleton is happy to report that he’s living in Atlanta, GA with his Kenyon sweetheart (Tanya Klimova ’03) and their five kids (13, 11, 9, 5, and 5). He works as a researcher at the Center of Excellence for Children's Behavioral Health at Georgia State University. That psychology degree came in handy after all. In June 2023, you can read his second book, The New Ballgame: The Not-So-Hidden Forces That Shape Baseball from Triumph Books.
After spending his entire career in higher education Chris Van Nostrand made a big transition into strength coaching. His company is called Strength Wise Barbell, and he focuses on elevating performance for athletes who are 40+. It feels a little nuts to make the leap into entrepreneurship with a family and a mortgage, but he’s also excited about finding a passion and trying something new. His family is doing great after moving back to Evanston, IL following almost a decade in the Bay Area.
And I (Hilary Hodge) was delighted to see some happy faces from our class at my husband’s and my five-year anniversary celebration. Will Oswald and his wife Hala, Ashley ’03 and Grant Alexander, and Dave Bukzspan and his wife Natalia graciously flew all the way to Chinon, France where we drank wonderful wine, ate great food, and partied in a beautiful old chateau (and of course ended the night with Freebird).
