Kenyon Class of 1997 Fall Class Letter

Best beloved Class of 1997:

The following quote by Niels Bohr stopped me in my tracks: “the opposite of a profound truth may well be another profound truth.”

Reflecting on our Reunion and the feedback many of you generously shared afterward, it seems evident that the past few years have pressure-tested and strengthened us - and yet the struggle has softened, rather than hardened our hearts. What a kind, accomplished, hilarious group of people comprise this class.

About this time last fall, a motley parliament of your fellow Owls hopped on a Zoom after volunteering to help plan our 25th Reunion. Besides a glancing familiarity with one another’s names from class letters like these, we really didn’t know each other at all.  It was like The Real World, just with more spreadsheets and worse production quality. But over the next nine months, we became surprisingly close - a real team, who is already scheming up ideas for our next gathering. Profound truths, both: a group of strangers one year ago; a team of loving co-conspirators today.

Here’s the good news: this team doesn’t have cuts. Anyone - actually, every one of you - would be welcomed with open arms to join us in planning the next reunion or pursuing whatever pro-Kenyon project piques your interest. All you have to do is be in touch. As far as we’re concerned (and I think I can speak with confidence on the College’s behalf), the more class agents, the merrier.

Okay! Enough preamble. We know you look forward to this letter to learn about what’s going on in the lives of 1997s; we’re also excited to share some of the news from the Hill this year:

This semester, 12 members of the Class of 2026 were able to enroll as the direct result of donor support for the Kenyon Access Initiative (KAI), a vital scholarship effort to increase access for low-income students. We’re only just getting started and aim to enroll 50 students each year through KAI, in addition to other robust financial aid. This additional diversity in backgrounds and lived experiences will further enrich daily life on campus.

Chalmers Library in the West Quad has quickly become a hub for such connections day and night. Its neighbor Lowell House, home to admissions and financial aid and named for Pulitzer Prize winning poet Robert T.S. Lowell IV ’40, is also now open. Oden Hall, future home to social sciences and named for former president Robert Oden, will open for instruction next year. The 261-space underground parking garage for visitors and employees — with EV charging, naturally — is already helping to ease congestion in the Village without disrupting the beauty of Gambier we all remember so fondly.

This year students will also soon have access to a dining option in “downtown” Gambier, when Peirce Express opens in a space under the Gambier Deli. (Shout out to all who remember eating in Gund Dining Hall!) This space will also be home some evenings to a student-run bar known as Flats, helping to provide a non-residences nightlife option. Look for more about both of these in an upcoming issue of Kenyon News Digest.

To further support all students, the College increased the budget for the Student Success Fund — emergency grants for which any student can apply. They also welcomed Dr. Lynn Hampton to serve in the newly created Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion position, providing additional leadership to the daily efforts of ODEI and partnering with Dean Chris Kennerly so he can extend his reach across campus with DEI efforts.

In other news, the Music Department is celebrating its 75th year. Alumni Council is developing an updated version of the Kenyon songbook (Kenyon has a songbook!) which will be viewable online soon and distributed at Reunion Weekend during the all-class sing. If you haven’t saved the date yet for Reunion Weekend, remember that all alumni are welcome to attend May 26-28.

I hope you’re now feeling wistful about our own time at Kenyon. I invite you to turn that nostalgia into action with a gift to help make all this possible! Gifts to the Kenyon Fund can be directed toward enrolling the next high-achieving group of students through the Kenyon Access Initiative, broader scholarships and financial aid efforts, athletics, one of the College’s many green centers and more. Please consider making your alma mater and today’s Kenyon students a philanthropic priority this year by giving online at gift.kenyon.edu.

I hope you’ve enjoyed hearing the news from the College this fall. I have certainly enjoyed (as always) hearing from those of you who submitted class notes for this letter (see below). I encourage folks who haven’t updated us with one recently to consider submitting a quick life update for the next batch of notes in the spring.

With love,
Kerry Sheldon and the 1997 Reunion Planning Committee

Class of 1997 Fall Notes

Amanda Berg Wilson
Just opened the world-premiere of THEATRE OF THE MIND, an immersive theatre experience created by Mala Gaonkar and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer David Byrne. I've been working on the piece since 2019 as Assistant Director and perform as one of the "Guides" who lead the audience through the show, which is based on neuroscience experiments. It was a thrill to work all summer shoulder to shoulder with one of my artistic heroes, whose curiosity and sense of adventure has him exploring new creative frontiers even at 70! If you are in the Denver area, we run through December 18.

Gregory Davis
Greg Davis just took a job working for a Congressional Commission charged with reforming The Pentagon’s system for requesting and spending money. This, no doubt, sounds exceedingly dry to most of you. If you’re not one of them, if you want to talk about PPBE, feel free to reach out! He’d love to hear from you.

Megan (Kubicka) Johnson
It was so wonderful to be back on campus in May. Our class is really special and I feel so lucky to be a part of it. We just celebrated our 1st year in Franklin, TN. and love it even more than we imagined. I am still at the same Film Editing company (25 years!) and also doing more work with my art and Interior Design on the side. It brings great joy to have different outlets. Our girls are growing up fast -- Charlotte is in 8th grade, Evelyn in 6th and Nancy-Louise (Lulu) is a 2nd grader. They are enjoying all the South has to offer and hoping to pick up an accent along the way. We love being Hotel Johnson so if you come visit Nashville let us know!

Kelli (Stebel) Schrade
Hello 1997! So enjoyed seeing everyone at our 25th reunion! Very much enjoyed our class dinner and sitting with Gundie pals, my 208 roommate Stacey Nichols, Liz Vitellaro, Eve (Zappulla) Anderson, Heather Baker, Sara (Harris) Hamilton -- and Liz Boon Carrico, too! Big kudos to Nicky Dreyfuss for one of my all-time favorite reunion moments, crowing me Reunion Queen -- lol. The sash, the crown, all fantastic! Extra thanks to Barb Kakiris for her kind comments and all my fellow reunion committee members! What fun! Let's see how my knees hold up for the 30th and more dance party fun (maybe a better location than McBride, though!).
Dwight Schultheis
This year marks my 20th year living in Boston (hard to believe!). I started a new job in April at a San Francisco based Company named Truepill in the digital health space. My wife Lauren, who recently became a social worker, joined another digital health Company named Cerebral and she sees patients exclusively over telehealth from home. We have two kids who are growing up quickly, now 12 and 14, who are both on travel sports teams (soccer and ice hockey). Although much of our time is spent taxiing the kids around to practices and games, we were able to squeeze in some great vacations this year. We visited Ireland in the Spring and Denmark earlier in the Fall. It was also great to see Ben Jump, Matt Mikula, Derrick Johnson, Keith Blecher, Adam Kendrick Myers, David Eisenberg, and Jason Lafferty in Green Lake Wisconsin over the summer (after sadly missing our 25th reunion).

Kerry Sheldon
This summer, I found myself buckling under a tsunami of grief. Some of this grief made sense: I lost a close colleague/friend after a brief and shocking battle with cancer; I pay weekly visits to a beloved mentor suffering the excruciating decline associated with Lewy Body Dementia. Other grief, though, took me by surprise: for example, my ex-husband briefly exhibited a simulacrum of the care, respect, and concern that caused me to fall in love with him 20 years ago, and I was crushed by the sudden, gutting pain of having lost THAT man. That sounds absurd, but seriously, this past year, I've felt mostly euphoric relief at having gotten divorced. When people would say "sorry about your divorce," I thought it was sweet - but to be frank, I wasn't even a little bit sorry.

Leaving the bad marriage my marriage had become was an obvious necessity once it came to that. What I hadn't done, though (as it turns out!) was grieve the GOOD marriage that our marriage once had been lo these many years ago. So now I'm doing that, and it's a-w-f-u-l. I have hope, though: my therapist assures me grief diminishes with time; my attorney reminds me sternly that the man my ex is today is wholly distinct from than the man I'm missing; and I've been channeling all this emotion into the healthiest of "vices," known as super-intense workouts. I've never been in better shape, y'all - no joke, my biceps are approaching Madonna early-aughts status.

Other happy news: Jack's school year is off to a shockingly fabulous start! He's loving 8th grade (thanks be to all that's holy!). In the depths of his anxiety last year, never could I have dreamed that I'd hear Jack say "I'm so excited to go to school today." I am so proud of him. Hope all of you are doing well too. Sending love to all my '97s!

Aaron Webber
After 9 years in England, found the love of my life and married him. Now John "Mac" MacLeod and I live happily in Exeter with our two cats. Highland wedding to follow next year!
