Kenyon Class of 1985 Fall Class Letter
| |
| Dear Friends,
I’m writing to you from the beautiful reading room in the new Chalmer’s Library. This is not to be confused with the “old” Chalmers Library of our time, or the Olin Library which started as we left and is now defunct. (Not that we’re old or anything). The new library is spectacular and changes as the sun moves across the sky. I take great joy in sitting in this library with nothing to do. It is an amazing place to sit (or sleep as the students around me are doing). Sitting here, I can’t help but be thankful for the gift of a Kenyon education and the opportunity to spend time on this beautiful campus. I am also thankful for you! As we grow older, I’m aware that 40-year friendships don’t happen that frequently, and the relationships formed at Kenyon continue to enrich my life daily.
I am on campus for Homecoming and Kenyon Fund Executive Committee (KFEC) meetings this weekend. It seems that while life changes, Kenyon – especially Middle Path, is always the same. As Susan Berger says, “If you sit on Middle Path long enough, people you love will show up!” Although I haven’t seen anyone from our class this weekend, I’ve seen friends from a variety of class years who are here for reunion planning, Alumni Council, or committee work.
If you haven’t been here for a while, I want to encourage you to come back in the near future. There will be a K80’s reunion in the spring, the Kenyon Bicentennial is in 2024, and our 40th (yikes) reunion is in 2025. If you haven’t saved the date yet for 2023 Reunion Weekend, remember that all alumni are welcome to attend May 26-28. Last year’s “all alumni Reunion” was a blast as I was able to hang out with people from the classes around us. Please plan to come!
I also want to ask you to remember your college experience and consider giving of your time, talent, and treasure. This weekend I had the opportunity to meet with a group of seniors and talk about their career plans/concerns/worries. We had a wonderful chat and I had to laugh, they are worrying about the same things we worried about years ago. Current students would love to meet you (and hear that things will work out). It might be as easy as connecting on LinkedIn.
The Kenyon Fund is a budget relieving fund that helps with everything from faculty salaries, to lawn mowing, to food in Pierce. This year our goal is $5.4 Million. That equates to $3,000 of support for each student on campus. While students don’t “see” the money directly, they are helped indirectly by the ways that the Fund supports the whole campus. Gifts to the Kenyon Fund can be directed toward enrolling the next high-achieving group of students through the Kenyon Access Initiative, broader scholarships and financial aid efforts, athletics, one of the College’s many green centers and more. Please consider making your Kenyon and today’s students a philanthropic priority this year by giving online at gift.kenyon.edu.
Thanks to all of you who submitted class notes! I hope to hear (and see) many more of you in the spring! Please just send a sentence or two and tell us what you’re doing!
In friendship,
Schwens
Aka Mary Schwendener
P.S. The College has an underground parking garage!? You have to see it.

Rick Curtiss: Hello Kenyon! This summer I was cast as a contestant on the quiz show Master Minds on the Game Show Network (GSN). I taped an episode on August 9 at CBS Studio City in Los Angeles. It was a completely different experience than appearing on Jeopardy (which I did on 2/27/2015) but still very interesting and fun. I don’t yet know the air date but once the new season starts, it should be available to watch on the Game Show Network website.
I am still very happily working for Red-Jeep.com giving Jeep tours of the desert around Palm Springs. I am now trained for - and giving tours of - the San Andreas Fault, the Indian Canyons, Joshua Tree National Park, Palm Springs celebrity homes and Palm Springs mid-century architecture. If you come to the Coachella Valley, I welcome you on one of our tours...ask for me!
Scott Garson: Retired from a paycheck in July 2021 and feeling strong and healthy. I have focused my energies as the founding Board Chair of a new nonprofit in Cleveland, Goods Bank NEO. Addressing both environmental concerns and helping those in greatest need, the organization redirects from the landfill with new products returned to retailers and provides them to nonprofits, helping the poorest in our community. No better way to spend my time!
Steve Hasler: My son Oliver is engaged to a lovely woman, Yen, from the Philippines, and a recent graduate of the US Naval Academy in Annapolis. She is currently serving in her country's navy. Oliver works at Raytheon in Baltimore and is learning to navigate the immigration system so they can reunite and begin a life together in the states.
In the meantime, by the time you read this, my wife Shawn and I will have finished a two week tour of Scotland with four of her newly found half-siblings and their spouses (a story for another day).
Jennifer Mizenko: It was wonderful to host and reconnect with Joe Pegues at Foxfire Ranch in Holly Springs during his Southern Tour! I couldn’t quite get him up & dancing. But I think he enjoyed the Hill Country Blues music!
Alfred Naddaff: My son AJ (Alfred Jeoffrey) Naddaff was recently accepted to Stanford to pursue his PHD in comparative literature. He was in Beirut, Lebanon for the past two years getting his MA at AUB (American University of Beirut) while working as a journalist with the AP.
Alexandra, my daughter, is living in Burlington, VT working for Hula (WeWork style company) managing their beautiful work spaces for aspiring entrepreneurs. She travels regularly to Europe (Brussels, in particular) to see friends and family. I recently finished an assignment in franchising with Checkers/Rally’s and have been enjoying the past month at our family home on Cape Cod. Geraldine just returned to teaching French at Brimmer & May after spending most of her summer in Brussels and France. Sending my love to all. ( pic of the Noddaf’s at Old Silver Beach, Cape Cod)

Matthew Rhoa: We sent our youngest off to boarding school this month. Churchill has opted out of formal education. (pic of Churchill below)

Patrick Shields: Patrick and wife Beckey Bright continue post production for their 2023 targeted documentary Eagleman and Wonder Woman: An America Love Story. Patrick is running the 2022 New York City Marathon to benefit the EJ Autism Foundation, founded and run by Bea Huste ’86. Lend your support for Bea, and help spread the word!
Frank Virnelli: I retired from working for the state of Connecticut April 1. I have been keeping busy since. At Hartford's Asylum Hill Congregational Church, I continue to serve as a deacon (part of the lay leadership), operate the cameras during livestream services and other events, and act as coordinator for our Men's Group, which meets for breakfast each month and serves meals at a local soup kitchen. I volunteered two days at The Travelers Championship PGA event, during which all went well other than I almost got Rory McIlroy run over by patrons. And I am starting as a volunteer at The Bushnell, which is the Hartford venue that hosts touring performances of Broadway shows, the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, national speakers, musicians, and comedians, among many events.
Mary Schwendener: I’m in a time of big transitions. By the time you read this, I will have retired from the VA and will be “only” working 30 hours a week (down from 70) at my private practice and a community mental health center. I’ve sold my house in Richmond, IN and am building a new home in McCordsville, IN (close to Indy). My son, Matt, just finished law school and we’re waiting for bar results. My daughter, Sae, (look for her on Apple Music) also graduated in the spring and is job searching (and hanging out with me!). I hope to hear from more of you (and see many of you?) in the spring! Love, Schwens
