Kenyon Class of 1981 Fall Class Letter
| |
| Hello Classmates,
I hope you had a nice summer and are enjoying the change of seasons. As I prepared to write another satirical class letter, I received news that our classmate Mike Ginley passed away.
In my view, Mike was everything Kenyon. Humble background, athlete scholar, never finished a beer (we called his half-drank beers Ginleys) and a devoted family man. We were fraternity brothers but didn’t really connect as close friends until after we graduated. Why is that? In a word: Kenyon. Our college connects us. It is a bond that grows long after we are off the Hill.
Our alma mater is doing amazing things to steel friendships and memories for the next generation of Lords (um, I mean Owls). And it is with our continued support that we make it happen.
This semester, 12 members of the Class of 2026 were able to enroll as the direct result of donor support for the Kenyon Access Initiative (KAI), a vital scholarship effort to increase access for low-income students. We’re only just getting started and aim to enroll 50 students each year through KAI, in addition to other robust financial aid. This additional diversity in backgrounds and lived experiences will further enrich daily life on campus.
This year students will also have a new place to leave Ginleys. A student-run bar known as Flats is opening as an alternative to the VI, helping to provide a new nightlife option. Of course, the VI is still an option.
If you can, please make a gift to the Kenyon Fund that can be directed toward enrolling the next high-achieving group of students through the Kenyon Access Initiative, broader scholarships and financial aid efforts, athletics, one of the College’s many green centers and more. Please consider making your alma mater and today’s Kenyon students a philanthropic priority this year by giving online at gift.kenyon.edu. If you haven’t saved the date yet for Reunion Weekend, remember that all alumni are welcome to attend May 26-28.
Your class agents have certainly enjoyed hearing from those of you who submitted class notes for this letter (see below). I encourage folks who haven’t updated us with one recently to consider submitting a quick life update for the next letter.
In closing, please enjoy a half a beer in honor of Mike.
Best wishes. Bud Grebey

Ronald "Jamie” Assaf has recently retired after 13 years as the SVP - General Counsel of KEMET Electronics, a global electronic component manufacturer. He has relocated from Boca Raton to Sarasota with his wife Nadine, whom he met 34 years ago in law school. They are the parents of twin girls - Maegan, an occupational therapist in Manhattan, and Caitrin, a TV news anchor in Little Rock - and a son, Brendan, who's a senior majoring in Entertainment Design at Ringling College of Art & Design.
Wendy (Webb) Cook, Cathy Regan and Michael Mizenko met up in Denver in September. Wendy reports that time flew as they caught up, shared memories, and even shared some confessions!

Afforded more time during lockdown, Doug Gertner stepped into a new endeavor as a booking agent, working with five artists from the US and Canada, hunting and securing them gigs and routing concert tours nationally. It's fun, a nice complement to his ongoing role as a DJ on community radio and presenter of house concerts, and recalls the days as concert chair of the Kenyon Social Committee. Doug hopes you all are getting back out to support live music and keeping musicians (and Doug) busy.
Sue Oakes (aka “Jonesie”) spent two months this summer hiking in Scotland, England, and Switzerland (with a quick 3-day end-of-trip layover in Iceland) with her daughter Dana ’18. They were joined by Sue’s husband and son for the two weeks in Switzerland. Sue then drove with Dana cross-country to Durham, where Dana is starting the Doctorate in Physical Therapy program at the Duke Medical School. She also hosted the Kenyon area alum at her home in August, including classmate Doug Gertner and colleague Andy Folkerth ’84. Back to work in early September, she is looking forward to retiring in a few years so she can have more holidays like that!
Laura Nelson’s grandson Ira was born in April. She is so happy to be able to hang with him, and his parents, regularly. Retired life is good.
After years of donating some of her handmade jewelry to orphanages in the Ukraine, Dorothy Lenard has been watching the war with great concern. It is heartbreaking to think that the kids who received her gifts are in danger! The good news is that the organization she works through has been able to shift from supporting orphanages to supporting refugees. So, a bunch of kids who have had a very hard year will get a little something special for Christmas.

Wendy MacLeod is spending the fall semester in Rome, where she enjoyed a visit from Jon Cohen and Clara (Church) Cohen ’81.
Doug Page is enjoying post-retirement life. That includes:
1) A tandem bike tour in Puglia, Italy in May
2) A 75-mile one day ride for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in September
3) Volunteering for Habitat for Humanity
4) Daughters’ visits to the south Jersey beach this summer
Gregory Sesler is easing towards retirement, spending less time working and more time traveling. He and his wife Beth went to Iceland and Spain this spring and just recently returned from a two-week self-drive canal boat trip in Belgium and France. It included a lot of World War I history. They very much enjoyed the land of waffles, chocolate, good beer, and french fries. Greg and Beth celebrated the wedding of their second daughter this past June and anticipate spending more time traveling this fall visiting their other three children, who are scattered about the country.
