Volunteer Shout Out //
SAM CLOUGHER ’17

Sam Clougher majored in History and Economics while at Kenyon and is currently a Law Student residing in Ann Arbor, MI.

How long have you been a Kenyon alumni volunteer?  I began volunteering whilst still a student as part of ALOT. After graduating, I served as the young alumni representative for Alumni Council for two years and then as secretary. I've also helped recruit players for the soccer team, volunteered to coach for parts of preseason, served as a class agent, reunion planner, and mentor for current international students.

Why do you choose to volunteer for Kenyon? To be honest, it always just felt like the natural thing to do. I was asked to volunteer right after graduation and I just accepted without thinking. As time progressed, I both enjoyed the work and saw some benefit. I tried to keep volunteering in places where I thought my voice might help whilst stepping back in others where it was time for new, fresh, and diverse thoughts.

Why do you give to the Kenyon Fund? I have many reasons for donating, but perhaps the most important is that my donation to Kenyon is an acknowledgement of the impact Kenyon had on me. I recognize that I was a teacher for four years and am now a student again. So, really, my minuscule donations make no difference to the grand scheme of the yearly budget. [Editor’s note: Yes, they do!] But my donation does show future students, rankings charts, the College, etc, that I am one of many recent alumni who are beyond grateful for Kenyon and the role the people and institution has and continues to play in my life [Editor’s note: Also true]. I was a poor student from Ireland who attended Kenyon purely from the generosity of donors and the financial aid budget and my life is forever better for that. So whilst I can't even dream of donating sizable amounts, I can show my appreciation in little ways.

What are you most proud of accomplishing as a Kenyon alumni volunteer? In a formal sense I am most proud of the continued evolution of Senior Premiere (a virtual networking event for seniors and alumni). More locally, though, I am proud of when I get to speak with potential or current students—all of whom are much smarter than me—and provide a sounding board for either their application and college choice or for what they work towards after graduation.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Continue playing sports whenever my back makes it possible!

Thank you, Sam, for all you do to support Kenyon. We couldn't do this work without you and our entire group of dedicated alumni volunteers!

Kenyon FUNDAY, April 26 & 27
Kenyon FUNDAY is a time to celebrate all our favorite things about Kenyon, while helping to create those same memories for today’s students. Today, the College continues to meet 100% of each student’s demonstrated need. This year 1,220 Kenyon students are receiving some form of financial aid — including more than 800 who receive need-based aid.

To that end, our annual two-day giving challenge, running April 26-27, will focus on the impact of the Kenyon Fund and ways our community can support current students. We invite you to make your gift early, then sign up as a Kenyon FUNDAY advocate and join us during one of our staff open office hours (below) to learn more about the challenge and how you can maximize your participation.

Volunteer Opportunities with Chicago Scholars
Chicago Scholars, a non-profit organization that connects high-achieving, first-generation or low-income students with pathways to college, career and leadership, is seeking volunteer mentors. According to the organization, mentors serve as guides and supporters for a cohort of scholars during their first two years in the program, often offering advice throughout the college admissions process, helping to smooth the transition to college and serving as a sounding board during their cohort’s first year of college classes. If you are in the Chicago area and interested in this opportunity, apply here or reach out to Alexandra Greenwald ‘16 at agreenwald@chicagoscholars.org with any questions.

Saying Thank You to Our Volunteers
April 17th  kicked off National Volunteer Appreciation Week and we would like to take a minute to say “THANKS”  for all you do for Kenyon! Check out the video from acting president, Jeff Bowman. We are also offering a 20% discount at the Kenyon Bookstore for all volunteers running today through next Monday, April 24. Use coupon code VOL20 online or in-store.
Alumni-student partnership for disabled/chronically ill
We are pleased to share the formation of a new alumni group to support the work of Kenyon’s new Disabled/Chronically Ill Student Community Organization (DISCO). The alumni group will work with DISCO’s student leadership to determine how we can best support their journey at and beyond Kenyon. Alumni with lived and/or professional experience in the disability movement, and friends of the movement, are welcome to join these efforts. Please contact Jerry Mindes ’77 at jerrymindes@gmail.com. Jerry is a Class Agent and his career has been in advancing disability rights in the US and especially globally in the context of international development assistance.
