Sprin 2023 Class Letters

Class of 2022 Spring Class Letter

Dear classmates,

We approach the midpoint of 2023 with two exciting developments on the horizon for Kenyon: the announcement of our 20th president later this summer and planning for our bicentennial in 2024. The alumni-led presidential search committee has assembled input from alumni and others in the Kenyon community into a leadership profile that outlines the qualities sought in Kenyon’s next president. For the latest on the search, visit kenyon.edu/presidentialsearch. As for the bicentennial, a call for proposals is underway! If you have an idea for a special project for the College’s 200th birthday celebration, you can apply for funding by emailing bicentennial@kenyon.edu.

In other college news, Oden Hall — named for Kenyon’s 17th president Robert A. Oden, Jr. (from 1995-2002) — opened in the spring as home to faculty from sociology, political science, history and philosophy. Anthropology is also represented with a dedicated laboratory space and Kenyon’s Center for the Study of American Democracy will also call Oden Hall home. Oden contains more than 50 offices for faculty, is fully accessible and houses a 280-seat auditorium, bridging the gap between the capacities of Rosse Hall and the Community Foundation Theater. I can’t wait to check it out in person the next time I’m back on the Hill!

In preparation for the bicentennial, members of Alumni Council have been busy working on an update to the Kenyon Songbook, which can now be viewed online at kenyon.edu/songs. Are you ready to warm up your vocalizers and get ready to burst into one of your favorite Kenyon tunes? This fifth edition of “Songs of Kenyon” continues a 166-year effort by the College and Alumni Council to both preserve and carry on Kenyon’s tradition of song. Published in 1859, 1866, 1906 and 1957, the first four editions chronicle the songs that defined generations of Kenyon students. The songs chosen for this edition were selected “because they both unify us in our past and point us towards our future.”

Speaking of unifying, alumni are also actively connecting on the CDO’s Kenyon Career Connections group on LinkedIn. It’s a space to share career-related opportunities and resources or promote career and continuing education discussions to the Kenyon community. I encourage you to check it out if you haven’t already!

I hope many of you participated in the College’s recent “Kenyon FunDay” to support today’s students via the Kenyon Fund. I enjoyed seeing the fun photos come in from regional events around the country, as well as watching the funds come in for today’s student over the course of the 36-hour giving challenge. There’s still time to make a gift if you missed the festivities! Visit kenyon.edu/funday to make your gift and join in the fun(d).

Up next for many Kenyon alumni is Reunion Weekend May 26-28, which should be a celebration to remember, as always. Then on to our yearlong bicentennial celebration! There will be lots of opportunities for alumni like us to participate, so stay tuned. I hope you will carve out some time to make it back to the Hill to celebrate our alma mater’s big 2-0-0 in whatever way feels meaningful to you.

Sincerely,
Your 2022 Class Agents

Class of 2022 Spring Notes

Rachel Billings: Hey all! I gotta say, spending time away from Kenyon has been harder than I expected... it also doesn't help that I'm freelancing in film in a particularly dry season for production. It almost makes me miss staying up till midnight to finish three books in a day! Hope everyone is well.

Samuel Chessler: Kenyon is a unique and beautiful place. My freshman year at Kenyon was a wonderful one and not something I’ll ever forget. Kenyon epitomized the liberal arts experience and is truly something unique.

Michael Gleason: Since walking across the stage at graduation I have helped a fellow classmate move to Austin Texas, took a trip to Puerto Rico, and in August started my job. I work at PNC Bank in Corporate Banking. In February I had the chance to come back to campus and catch up with friends. Looking forward to my next visit!

Curtis Goldbaum: There’s a lot of fun to be had in any stage of life.

Sarah Groustra: This February, I made my NYC playwriting debut with a show at the Chain Theatre in Manhattan, with the help of fellow Kenyon alums Mackenna Goodrich ’20 (director), Sara Rosenthal (actress), Cora Cicala and Jane Lindstrom (production designers). We all worked on so many productions together in college, and it was wonderful to bring our skills back together in New York!

Julia Holton: I will be attending the University of Edinburgh to pursue a master's degree in Classical Art and Archaeology in 2023-2024.

Andy Kelleher: I took a software development job that brought me out to Madison, WI. Suffice to say, Gambier weather (especially that polar vortex back in 2019) was good preparation for this past winter! I've gotten into the local dance scene here, too — despite never picking up that minor in the end — and am continually grateful for all the exposure to different styles I got while at Kenyon.

I've kept in touch with a couple of professors and classmates and hope to reconnect with more of them at some point. And even if I hadn't tried to keep contact, Kenyon has had a way of finding me anyway: There are at least two other Kenyon graduates (though not '22) living in my apartment complex.

Rebecca Kornman: Rebecca is living it up in the Big Easy working at a historic house and making friends with ghosts.

Katie Kress: Katie has accepted a position teaching choir and general music in New York, NY. She has relocated to the city, and is soon to finish out her first year with her elementary and middle school students!

Dannie Lane:
Dannie gives a shoutout to his fellow members KCXC '22 (IYKYK—you remain unnamed so that he has to do less fact-checking work in the coming weeks) who spent a week with him and a good group of other XC boys running, hiking, and generally having a great time in West Virginia last spring. He misses that trip and thinks of it—and his friends–fondly.

Emmie Mirus: I am halfway through my second semester of law school at the University of Wisconsin. While I still keep up with Kenyon's swimming and diving team to a nearly ridiculous extent, I haven't been able to bring myself to hop back in the pool . . . yet! I live in Madison with my partner Ben Baturka ’20 and our cat, Ginger. I've had a great time meeting Kenyon alumni at Wisconsin's Law School, and would love to get to know any other Kenyon alumni-turned-lawyers, or to provide information and guidance to any current Kenyon students thinking about attending law school!

Bridget Molnar: In law school…I consider dropping out most days but somehow have not…let’s call it perseverance.

Sierra Smith: Since graduation, I've been living in Durham, NC with Emma Banks, and working in a cell biology lab at Duke! Several members of the class of 2022 moved here after graduation, and it's been wonderful to have a tiny Kenyon community. If anyone finds themselves in the area, be sure to reach out!

Eddie Weber: I’m almost at the end of my first year of graduate school. I’m pursuing a master of public policy (MPP) degree at the University of Michigan - Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy. I focus on international economic development policy and cross-cultural diplomacy. It’s a two-year program and I can’t believe how fast it’s going. I also live with my best friend and roommate of 5 years now. Life is good.
