Sprin 2023 Class Letters

Class of 2019 Spring Class Letter

Dear classmates,

We approach the midpoint of 2023 with two exciting developments on the horizon for Kenyon: the announcement of our 20th president later this summer and planning for our bicentennial in 2024. The alumni-led presidential search committee has assembled input from alumni and others in the Kenyon community into a leadership profile that outlines the qualities sought in Kenyon’s next president. For the latest on the search, visit kenyon.edu/presidentialsearch. As for the bicentennial, a call for proposals is underway! If you have an idea for a special project for the College’s 200th birthday celebration, you can apply for funding by emailing bicentennial@kenyon.edu.

In other college news, Oden Hall — named for Kenyon’s 17th president Robert A. Oden, Jr. (from 1995-2002) — opened in the spring as home to faculty from sociology, political science, history and philosophy. Anthropology is also represented with a dedicated laboratory space and Kenyon’s Center for the Study of American Democracy will also call Oden Hall home. Oden contains more than 50 offices for faculty, is fully accessible and houses a 280-seat auditorium, bridging the gap between the capacities of Rosse Hall and the Community Foundation Theater. I can’t wait to check it out in person the next time I’m back on the Hill!

In preparation for the bicentennial, members of Alumni Council have been busy working on an update to the Kenyon Songbook, which can now be viewed online at kenyon.edu/songs. Are you ready to warm up your vocalizers and get ready to burst into one of your favorite Kenyon tunes? This fifth edition of “Songs of Kenyon” continues a 166-year effort by the College and Alumni Council to both preserve and carry on Kenyon’s tradition of song. Published in 1859, 1866, 1906 and 1957, the first four editions chronicle the songs that defined generations of Kenyon students. The songs chosen for this edition were selected “because they both unify us in our past and point us towards our future.”

Speaking of unifying, alumni are also actively connecting on the CDO’s Kenyon Career Connections group on LinkedIn. It’s a space to share career-related opportunities and resources or promote career and continuing education discussions to the Kenyon community. I encourage you to check it out if you haven’t already!

I hope many of you participated in the College’s recent “Kenyon FunDay” to support today’s students via the Kenyon Fund. I enjoyed seeing the fun photos come in from regional events around the country, as well as watching the funds come in for today’s student over the course of the 36-hour giving challenge. There’s still time to make a gift if you missed the festivities! Visit kenyon.edu/funday to make your gift and join in the fun(d).

Up next for many Kenyon alumni is Reunion Weekend May 26-28, which should be a celebration to remember, as always. Then on to our yearlong bicentennial celebration! There will be lots of opportunities for alumni like us to participate, so stay tuned. I hope you will carve out some time to make it back to the Hill to celebrate our alma mater’s big 2-0-0 in whatever way feels meaningful to you.

Sincerely,
Your 2019 Class Committee

Class of 2019 Spring Notes

Adam Aluzri: In honor of being kicked off my parents' health insurance, I've decided to no longer get sick. This includes no longer breaking my fingers by leaping full-speed off that ledge near Caples. Thanks to all my friends for supporting me through this difficult decision.

Isabella Blofeld: I’m learning to boulder with Conner McEldowney, and have accepted that I’m a morning person. Michael Lahanas-Calderón and I recently bought our cat a heated blanket. She’s never been happier. Life in Berkeley, CA is good!

Molly Cox: Since late 2021, I've been running an after-school program for refugee youth through Soccer Without Borders in Baltimore, MD. I love working directly with refugee middle schoolers and putting my IS degree and Arabic minor to use every day! However, I'm excited to gain a new set of skills in July, when I enroll in the Master of Public Administration program at Syracuse University, focusing on managing government and international nonprofit programs. If you have any recommendations for surviving the winter in upstate New York, please let me know!

Emily Davis has become slightly less of an indoor kid, as she has been dating known frat star and theatre debutant Derek Foret ’17 for the past three years. To her parents' shock, she now occasionally agrees to go out twice in one weekend.

Taaj Davis: I am still educating and I am still creating. Herb Wakefield and I have now published over 30 episodes of The NuBlack Podcast - including one with President Decatur. If you've been listening, we are incredibly grateful, and if you have not been listening, we hope you consider checking us out! In addition to the podcasts, I have just released my third album - Highly Educated - on major streaming platforms. So that concludes my shameless plugging. I hope to make it back to Gambier soon!

Taylor Hazan: I recently moved in with my non-Kenyon-alum boyfriend, so I'm hanging up a ton of Kenyon stuff to rival the signs he "borrowed" from Villanova's campus. If all goes to plan, I'm moving across the country to attend another purple school (the University of Washington) later this year to study library science! This means that I did NOT lie on my job application for the Multimedia Desk position back in August 2015.

Abby Kastenberg: Since graduation I've been living in Philly. I've been doing a mix of stage managing as well as teaching 6th grade English at Germantown Friends School here in Philly. It's definitely never a dull moment!

Jess Kusher is in graduate school at the University of Charleston, SC, perusing a marine biology master’s degree (as promised), but as we all know the best laid plans of mice and men oft go awry. (Area of study interest change!) That said, she’s actually really excited to be studying biogeochemical cycling as it pertains to blue carbon sequestration in the Charleston salt marshes using remote sensing and water chemistry analysis. Finally putting those Rstudio coding skills from intro bio lab back to use and it feels right — although, “Modeling carbon cycling is significantly more difficult than any nonsensical intro chem ALEKS would have had us believe.” In her free time, she’s working on organizing a community unity garden celebrating Gullah/Geechee cooking traditions and birdwatching as much as she can.

Erica Littlejohn: Last spring, I graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a Master of Fine Art in Fiber and Material Studies. I am still living in Chicago, where I have set up my studio and recently did a large commission for the national chain Sweetgreen. This summer, I will be showing work around the United States and participating in my first international show in South Korea. I am also assisting Jamaican-born visual artist and educator Ebony G. Patterson in her studio!

Hannah Orbach-Mandel: I am living life in Sacramento, CA working in public policy. I have discovered Sacramento is not the place for me and I am planning on moving to San Francisco this summer. Hoping to find some Kenyon alums there!

Tyler Raso: I will publish/published a chapbook in May titled In my dreams/I love like an idea, which won Frontier Poetry's 2022 Digital Chapbook Contest. The project began as my Creative Writing capstone at Kenyon, and will be published/was published the same week I graduate(d) from my MFA in Poetry from Indiana University.

Sean Seu: I married Blake Palmer of Cape Girardeau, this last Halloween at the Kitsap County Courthouse in Washington State. The ceremony was followed by a heart-healthy helping of steak and bubbles.

Jacob Skolnik: Since graduating Kenyon, I have gone to law school, taken the bar exam, and am now a practicing attorney! I practice family law in Chicago. I’ve also recently proposed to my fiancé (not a Kenyon grad!) and adopted two cats. I live in the Logan Square neighborhood in Chicago, where a lot of my fellow Kenyon graduates reside as well.

Ethan Snyder: This spring I will be graduating from the Winterthur Program with an MA in Material Culture Studies. I have found the most wonderful mentor in Sarah Wasserman ’03 who has advised me throughout my time in this program, and whose work I was first introduced to my senior year while majoring in English. We both follow in the footsteps of our shared advisor, Ted Mason! I am grateful for the way Kenyon has followed me after life on the Hill. I will soon be moving back to Philadelphia to live with Alexandra Kanovsky and pursue collections work at the Wharton Esherick Museum.

Madison Thompson: Hello Classmates! It’s been quite a while. I graduated with my M.Sc. in mathematics from Wake Forest University in May 2022. That August, I began (and still am) teaching math at a small boarding school in Hagerstown, MD where I find myself once again surrounded by corn fields. I coached field hockey in the fall and am now coaching tennis. My dog Aster has been with me since 2020, and she is enjoying all the attention being a dog at a boarding school brings.

Elise Tran: Sriracha mayo and crunchy fried onions over my morning egg on rice is getting me through the hope and heartbreak of Chicago’s multiple false springs.

Cat Von Holt: Hi all! I'm currently finishing up my second year of law school at Northeastern University in Boston. I'll be alternating between Boston and New York City every semester until I graduate next spring. I'm living alone/without roommates for the first time ever and it is ~very expensive~ but also very nice. I can't wait to get a puppy once I stop moving around so much and settle down in NYC post-graduation. I hope you're all doing well!

Kaylin Allshouse: SUPER busy prepping to direct my newest short film this weekend in Pomeroy, OH! I’m exploring mother/daughter relationships after the death of a parent, kind of a downer but I have an EXCELLENT crew! Kenyon grads, Charles Cutler, Zack Richeimer ‘21, Kyle Bower ‘22, and Jack Cohen ‘22 are helping me make this come to life. I’ve also been having the best time touring film festivals with my last short, PARTNR. Our next screenings are in Toronto, St. Petersburg, FL and at the Phoenix Film Festival!
