Sprin 2023 Class Letters

Class of 2017 Spring Class Letter

Dear friends and classmates,

Many of us in the class of 2017 began our time at Kenyon alongside President Sean Decatur. I for one remember being greeted by him as I was first moving into my McBride dorm room. And yet we are not like Kokosing. This year we congratulate President Decatur on his exciting new role, and he leaves the hill as we all must — but Kenyon and the Kokosing carry on. Later this year Kenyon looks forward to announcing our 20th president as well as planning for our bicentennial in 2024.

The alumni-led presidential search committee has assembled input from alumni and others in the Kenyon community into a leadership profile that outlines the qualities sought in Kenyon’s next president. For the latest on the search, visit kenyon.edu/presidentialsearch. As for the bicentennial, a call for proposals is underway! If you have an idea for a special project for the College’s 200th birthday celebration, you can apply for funding by emailing bicentennial@kenyon.edu.

In preparation for the bicentennial, members of Alumni Council have been busy working on an update to the Kenyon Songbook, which can now be viewed online at kenyon.edu/songs. This fifth edition of “Songs of Kenyon” continues a 166-year effort by the College and Alumni Council to both preserve and carry on Kenyon’s tradition of song. Published in 1859, 1866, 1906 and 1957, the first four editions chronicle the songs that defined generations of Kenyon students. The songs chosen for this edition were selected “because they both unify us in our past and point us towards our future.” I hope to sing them with you soon!

It is always a pleasure to read everyone’s class notes (and I hope you peak below yourselves!). Many of us, me included, have recently completed, or are completing graduate programs. Congratulations! Wherever you are right now in your professional lives, I wanted to highlight the CDO’s Kenyon Career Connections group on LinkedIn. It’s a space to share career-related opportunities and resources or promote career and continuing education discussions for the Kenyon community. I encourage you to check it out if you haven’t already! You never know what connections you might make or be able to make for a student.

I hope many of you participated in the College’s recent “Kenyon FunDay” to support today’s students via the Kenyon Fund. I enjoyed seeing the fun photos come in from regional events around the country, as well as watching the funds come in for today’s student over the course of the 36-hour giving challenge. There’s still time to make a gift if you missed the festivities! Visit kenyon.edu/funday to make your gift and join in the fun(d).

Up next for many Kenyon alumni is Reunion Weekend May 26-28, which should be a celebration, as always. Then on to our yearlong bicentennial celebration! There will be lots of opportunities for you to participate, so stay tuned. I hope you will carve out some time to make it back to the Hill to celebrate our alma mater’s big 2-0-0 in whatever way feels meaningful to you.

Sincerely,
Seth Reichert

Class of 2017 Spring Notes

Emily Balber: Emily completed her Masters in Art Therapy from NYU and is currently living her best life as Live2D rigger and mentor. She lives with her husband Gurpreet in Brooklyn with their four furkids, two dogs and two cats. Due to the pandemic, Emily will soon be going to India for their 3rd marriage celebration, to meet Preet's side of the family for the first time.

Daniel Cebul: Last fall I started a PhD in Political Science at MIT after spending the past 5 years bouncing around jobs in D.C. I'm mostly taking courses focused on emerging technology and national security issues/international relations (nuke delivery systems, drones, cyber, AI, etc.), along with a healthy dose of statistics and as one professor often says, "basic matrix algebra." Kenyon definitely prepared me well for the academic rigors of graduate school, but I would trade the tech hellscape that is MIT's campus for the beauty of the Hill in a millisecond. Hope to connect with other Kenyon grads in the Boston area so let me know if y'all are around!

Tracy Chimiel: I have some big life updates to write about for the first time since graduation! Last fall I got engaged to my boyfriend of five years, and in December I graduated with my PhD in physics from the University of Chicago. By January I had moved to Minneapolis and started teaching physics lab classes at the University of Minnesota. I've been loving the city and new job.

Katherine Connolly:
This past year, Megan Otto and I made a podcast in which we watch Dune: Part 1, ten minutes at a time. It's called Pod is the Cast Killer. We love it so much we made a spin-off podcast where we consult with our good friend Alex Kirshy about how the podcast is going, and those episodes are closer to an hour. Stay tuned for many more appearances by Kenyon alums you know and love. I have not been able to work on this podcast in a few months because of grad school, but that makes it the perfect time to catch up. Like, subscribe, etc. Cheers.

Bailey Dominguez: Just celebrated 1 year at Salesforce in Indianapolis where I’ve been managing a team of SDRs who never fail to make me feel like I’m 100 years old. I’m getting married this September and am the proud mother of two tiny dogs. Wedding planning is terrible, thank you for asking!!!!!!!

Derek Foret has no recent successes of his own to note, but he is happy to report that Emily Davis ’19 recently not only won the 2022 Andrew W. Marshall Paper Prize but also was named an America in the World Consortium Pre-Doctoral Fellow for 2023–24. Her recent successes have made Derek's lifestyle slightly more opulent; he now uses Dawn EZ-Squeeze while cleaning the dishes.

Ethan Fuirst: The company I worked for downsized and laid me off in January. No joke.

Ben Grannis: Happy spring, friends! I find myself in the New England area growing the #EyesUp business with the goals of ending distracted driving, promoting digital wellness, and encouraging young people to follow their dreams. Please reach out with questions or if you want to catch up. I have been fortunate to connect with a handful of Kenyon graduates recently - including Chris Stevens on Broadway; Caroline Borders ’16 and Alex Koch ’15 on Maui; and Sam Adams ’81 on Zoom for some business mentoring. Let's give Mason McCool a big round of applause for completing his dissertation and defense for his PhD!!

Alexandra Hansen:
It has been an exciting year so far! In January, I wrapped up my 4th season working in Antarctica as an Expedition Guide and Polar Historian aboard small expedition ships. I am already packing for my next expedition across the South Atlantic, up the East Coast of Africa and into the Mediterranean. My fiancé, Denis and I are enjoying traveling the world together and will be getting married in 2024! Yay!

Morgan Harden
recently earned her MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Then she did something she never imagined: she moved back to Ohio. She now works for Procter & Gamble as a Senior Brand Manager.

Sinika Martin-Gonzalez: Balancing part-time work and being a part-time student while I finish my Masters of Library Science at Queens College. It can definitely be a challenge! There is also a new puppy in the family. Milosz will have been with us two years in April. Allie-cat is still going strong at age twenty.

Mollie O’Leary: Mollie's chapbook The Forgetting Curve was published this April through poetry.onl, a journal and press edited by Tarik Dobbs. The Forgetting Curve is available in physical and ebook form.

Aldis Petriceks has been reading Jorge Luis Borges like a madman, who then renewed his interest in Kafka, and he has come to agree that a book must be the axe for the frozen sea within us.

Graham Reid defended his Ph.D. in atomic physics from the University of Maryland.

Nathaniel Shahan is still living in NYC, living with Rad Savage ’19 on the UES. He enjoys cycling and running in Central Park. But most of all he enjoys working and is glad everyone is back in the office.

Seth Reichert: I am wrapping up my master’s degree in urban planning at UCLA in June and have been busy researching, learning, and working! I’ve been most interested in transportation and land use related issues and doing data science work. I don’t know yet what the next chapter holds, I’ll probably stay in L.A. or move to N.Y.C. sometime this fall so stay tuned.
