Sprin 2023 Class Letters

Class of 2014 Spring Class Letter

Dear classmates,

We approach the midpoint of 2023 with two exciting developments on the horizon for Kenyon: the announcement of our 20th president later this summer and planning for our bicentennial in 2024. The alumni-led presidential search committee has assembled input from alumni and others in the Kenyon community into a leadership profile that outlines the qualities sought in Kenyon’s next president. For the latest on the search, visit kenyon.edu/presidentialsearch. As for the bicentennial, a call for proposals is underway! If you have an idea for a special project for the College’s 200th birthday celebration, you can apply for funding by emailing bicentennial@kenyon.edu.

In other college news, Oden Hall — named for Kenyon’s 17th president Robert A. Oden, Jr. (from 1995-2002) — opened in the spring as home to faculty from sociology, political science, history and philosophy. Anthropology is also represented with a dedicated laboratory space and Kenyon’s Center for the Study of American Democracy will also call Oden Hall home. Oden contains more than 50 offices for faculty, is fully accessible and houses a 280-seat auditorium, bridging the gap between the capacities of Rosse Hall and the Community Foundation Theater. I can’t wait to check it out in person the next time I’m back on the Hill!

In preparation for the bicentennial, members of Alumni Council have been busy working on an update to the Kenyon Songbook, which can now be viewed online at kenyon.edu/songs. Are you ready to warm up your vocalizers and get ready to burst into one of your favorite Kenyon tunes? This fifth edition of “Songs of Kenyon” continues a 166-year effort by the College and Alumni Council to both preserve and carry on Kenyon’s tradition of song. Published in 1859, 1866, 1906 and 1957, the first four editions chronicle the songs that defined generations of Kenyon students. The songs chosen for this edition were selected “because they both unify us in our past and point us towards our future.”

Speaking of unifying, alumni are also actively connecting on the CDO’s Kenyon Career Connections group on LinkedIn. It’s a space to share career-related opportunities and resources or promote career and continuing education discussions to the Kenyon community. I encourage you to check it out if you haven’t already!

I hope many of you participated in the College’s recent “Kenyon FunDay” to support today’s students via the Kenyon Fund. I enjoyed seeing the fun photos come in from regional events around the country, as well as watching the funds come in for today’s student over the course of the 36-hour giving challenge. There’s still time to make a gift if you missed the festivities! Visit kenyon.edu/funday to make your gift and join in the fun(d).

Up next for many Kenyon alumni is Reunion Weekend May 26-28, which should be a celebration to remember, as always. Then on to our yearlong bicentennial celebration! There will be lots of opportunities for alumni like us to participate, so stay tuned. I hope you will carve out some time to make it back to the Hill to celebrate our alma mater’s big 2-0-0 in whatever way feels meaningful to you.

Sincerely,
Andrew Parmelee

P.S. Please enjoy the life updates provided by your classmates of 2014! Scroll down to find them.

Class of 2014 Spring Notes

Zoey Erdenebileg lives and works in Toronto after finishing her master’s at U of T. Please holla if you ever come through the 6ix. BYE!

Regan Fink, after almost 9 years graduated from Kenyon, can finally say she is living her dream job. She works in regulatory affairs at Pine Gate Renewables, lives in Asheville NC, and can bike to her office. With no idea what she wanted to do after Kenyon, she is feeling pretty close to what she was hoping for.

Jon Green recently accepted a position to join the Department of Political Science at Duke University as an assistant professor.

Addisu Hodes continues, for now, to reside in Washington, D.C. Occasionally he runs into Kenyon folks. His highlight of 2022, however, was seeing Anna Yie twice— once in DC, where she made him run excessively (which he hasn’t forgiven her for) and most recently, in Boston. In the most recent visit, Addisu provided Anna with much valuable gossip and rumors.

Addisu was recently in Ethiopia scouting the political climate. He is contemplating running for president of Ethiopia. He welcomes applications from fellow 2014 grads to run his political campaign.

In summer 2022, Simon Hoellerbauer received his PhD in political science from UNC-Chapel Hill. He is working as a postdoc in data science at Vassar College, where he is helping Vassar get its Data Science and Society program up and running.

After completing a master's in arts administration at Ohio University this spring, David Hoyt will put his new degree to use this summer with a position at the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado. While sad to be leaving Gambier (again) after seven years working in Kenyon Communications, he is looking forward to meeting other alumni in the Centennial State.

Benjamin Jacoby recently moved from Seattle to Chicago as it felt like it was time for a bit of a change. He is still getting used to the lack of mountains again but is enjoying the dying gasps of the frigid Midwest winter, nonetheless.

Michael Kengmana has been listening to the new Boygenius songs and wondering if Joseph Wun has been crying his eyes out in joy as much as Michael has while listening to them. Michael has also been experimenting with different forms of letting oats and other grains sit overnight in a pool of creamy liquid and is really learning a lot. Michael would love to share what he has learned with Joseph, and to hear any suggestions he might have. Michael hopes that Joseph is making lots of friends in medical school and would love to know what kind of snacks Joseph has been taking to school every day.

Darci (Marcum) Kern is venturing into the world of knitwear design and working as a speech pathologist in St. Louis!

Christopher King graduated from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry in 2020. He currently practices General Dentistry in Upper Arlington, Ohio.

Kelsey Kiser, along with some members of the class of 2014 (shout out Ally Bruschi, Lucy Phillips, Sydney Fishman, Natalie Margolin, Rebecca Frisch, and Sydney Watnick), recently threw their 12th annual Love Hurts party, which originated in a New Apt their junior year! It was great seeing many Kenyon friends there. Consider this your invitation to join them next year in NYC for the 13th!

Molly McCleary was delighted to celebrate the third annual Corndog's Eve with pals Olivia Sabik, Anna Yie, Tracy Curtin, Claire Dutton, Maggie (Higby) Ericksen ’12, Meghan Henshall ’12, and Nico Hargreaves-Heald ’12. As you may expect, Corndog's Eve is a holiday born from pandemic madness and features friends, costumes, lawn games, reimagined song lyrics, and other silliness. She also harasses Ffej Caplan ’12 on a regular basis and was lucky to spend a fun weekend with Becky Gorin at a Maggie Rogers concert and King Arthur baking class. Basically, if you find yourself in the Boston-ish area, say hi.

Sam McQuiston now works for the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) PBC who is working to get MDMA assisted therapy approved for the treatment of PTSD. He and his wife welcomed their first wild child, Cecelia, in 2021 and will welcome our second in April 2023.

Kristina Miklavic bought a house. It needs a lot of work, but the view is splendid. Jane Symmes’ ’16 new EP is great music to listen to when doing renovations – highly recommend. On another important note: Kristina got to virtually attend Anabel Yahuitl Garcia’s PhD defense. She is now a doctor and Kristina is a proud friend.

Rebecca Ogus welcomed Richard Elliott Nasipak-Ogus who was born on 10/9/22. Rebecca and Zach, her husband, decided to go with all the names, and to call him Elliott. (R. McKinley Sherrod, is tapped to dispense future advice about going by your middle name.) McKinley and Margaret Tilson, came to visit Baltimore in August where they helped Rebecca clean out closets and hang pictures in advance of Elliott’s arrival. True friends indeed! Angela Bryan-Brown, stopped by in November for a visit, which was very lovely, and added international flair to Elliott’s fan club. Sometimes Rebecca runs into Mike Broida ’12, and Sarah Schulz ’12, on the street in our neighborhood — always a delight.
In September, Olivia Sabik married Jamie Johnston at Borderland State Park in Massachusetts. Olivia and Jamie were introduced by fellow Kenyon ultimate alum Daniel “Franz” Franz ’10 who met them both playing pickup in Charlottesville, VA. She celebrated at her bachelorette party with Kenyon pals Molly McCleary, Anna Yie, Claire Dutton, Tracy Curtin, Becky Gorin, Caroline Whitcomb, and Lindsay Sabik ’03.

Caroline Whitcomb, her husband, and their two dogs made the move from Charlottesville to Boston in May of 2022. She loves getting to see lots of local Kenyon friends--please let her know if you're ever in the area!

After moving from KCMO to Seattle to Baltimore (where he had the great joy of living a few blocks from Rebecca Ogus and her husband Zach) in the last three years, Joseph Wun is now situated for at least the next four in Detroit, MI. He is a first-year again in two important ways: as a medical student and as a husband, with both school and marriage starting around the same time in July 2022. He remains grateful and humbled for having found a loving life partner, and for being able to celebrate the wedding with many people from every era of his life. His wife, Cassie, is a 1L at Detroit Mercy Law. Her native capacities for passionate reason and genuine compassion have only been sharpened and put most keenly to work at convincing Joseph that they should get a puppy.

Joseph is likewise humbled and grateful for the opportunity to study medicine, especially in Detroit, and looks forward to incorporating his humanities background into his learning and practice. So far, he has enjoyed working with Street Medicine Detroit, a collaborative that seeks to provide high quality medical care for Detroit's unreached, houseless population.

Joseph wonders how Michael Kengmana has been enjoying his walks down by the docks, and if he has found any novel or exciting ways to pick up things or one's own body and put them/it down again for physical exercise and general frivolity. He hopes that he has had a handful of memorable transit experiences as of late, like the one Joseph had chatting with a GM engineer, while on flight, about the interior design of cars. He also wants to know if Michael has tried any new snack ideas involving legumes lately, and, if so, if he would share them with him.

Hillary Yarosh is training for her first half marathon and taking time to travel. She recently went to the Bahamas with her family, Hawaii to see friends and meet her goddaughter, and Seattle to visit Mariah (Williamson) Spannbauer’16. This summer Hillary is looking forward to becoming an aunt!

Anna Yie is finally breaking her 9-year silence because she promised her best friend Addisu Hodes that she would. She moved to Boston in 2020 and has been enjoying living within walking distance of freshman year hallmate Molly McCleary, as well as the rest of the frisbee & corndog crew including Olivia Sabik, Tracy Curtin, Claire Dutton, Meghan Henshall ’12, Maggie (Higby) Ericksen ’12, and Nico Hargreaves-Heald ’12. She would like to take this opportunity to say that her parents were correct: she has never gone to a nicer gym than the KAC. Also, she misses Peirce.

Lewis Williams Gray, Alistair Flynn and Andrew Parmelee continue to go unfathomably low each time they play golf. All of them wait anxiously for Edgar Arceo ’15 to pick up a club so they can round out their Sky Lounge foursome.
