Life in the FAST Lane - Holiday Edition

Welcome to the inaugural edition of 'Life in the FAST Lane', FAST's first of many e-newsletters for our Faculty, about our Faculty.

As a work-in-progress publication, we will be developing the newsletter with each edition. We value your input (this is for you, after all) so we can deliver content that is useful, informative and engaging. If you have an article or a suggestion you'd like to share through a FAST communication channel, please email fast_events@sheridancollege.ca

Message from the Dean, Vertha Coligan

Season's Greetings!
I am so pleased to be able to share this first edition of the FAST e-newsletter with you. Since starting almost one year ago, one of my initiatives was to improve communications within our Faculty. With the PD conference in the spring, the Welcome Back in the early fall, and the launch of this newsletter, I'm happy to be making progress within my first year here at Sheridan. But there's still so much we can do to keep the lines of communication open and clear. And believe me, there's more to come.

As we move forward with our strategic plan, we are all working hard to deliver a stronger and more targeted curriculum to our students while keeping our faculty and staff current, updated and engaged.

This e-newsletter will be circulated at the beginning of each semester and will highlight some of the outstanding accomplishments within our Faculty. We want to keep the content as relevant and interesting to everyone as possible, so many of the stories you won't see elsewhere.

Please do keep sending me your accomplishments and successes. Some accomplishments will be celebrated as we move through the school year, others will be celebrated through successive publications of our e-newsletter.  But you can be sure of one thing, your successes will be celebrated, and are tremendously valued!
Have a restful and restorative break and I look forward to welcoming in a new year with positivity, productivity and success. I wish you and your families a wonderful holiday season and every happiness in 2020.

MEET Capstone Showcase

December Capstone Showcases

The Capstone Showcase for Applied Computing, and Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Technology (MEET) have just concluded. Our students presented some outstanding research projects and, as always, proved just how inspired and capable they are!
Details and photos of the Capstone Showcases will be included in the official launch of 'Life in the FAST Lane' in January.

Celebrating our Diversity

An Invitation to Share Your Unique Perspective

At the Welcome Back Event in August, Sheridan's Centre for Equity & Inclusion led exercises which focused on, and celebrated, the diversity of our Faculty.
We'd like to continue to explore and share that diversity by finding out more about you. What is your perspective on equity, diversity and inclusion in post secondary education? How do you recognize and foster the inclusion of people’s diverse identities in the classroom?
The Ontario Human Rights Code identifies some of the key areas of diversity, and provides a good starting point for our exploration. These areas include:
  • race, ancestry, place of origin, colour ethnic origin, citizenship
  • creed (religious, Indigenous or spiritual observance)
  • sex, sexual orientation
  • disability
  • age
  • gender expression, gender identity
We invite you to share your thoughts with us. For example, how and when do you celebrate your culture and special observances? How do you cater to diversity in teaching? Send your photos & stories to fast_events@sheridancollege.ca

Professional Development

2019 Welcome Back Event

Although it seems like ages ago now, we were so pleased with the amazing turnout at our Welcome Back event in August. We were thrilled that so many of our faculty made the trip to Burlington to participate in our special, off-campus event.
We received some very insightful and helpful feedback from the event survey. We thank those who completed the survey, for your time and your honesty. Based on survey feedback, a sample of suggested topics for coverage is below:
  • Inform of new or updated programs (planned and/or launched)
  • Practical applications of teaching science and technology to improve our teaching as well as student success
  • FAST initiatives
  • Speed networking to get to know others in the Faculty
  • News and plans that affect the whole faculty
  • What we can do to make our programs better
This feedback will help to guide some of the content of Faculty events, and this newsletter, moving forward. We plan to present topics that are relevant to the entire FAST community and represent the phenomenal growth and development of our Faculty offerings.
We will be connecting again, face-to-face, on February 25th for a day of Professional Development, networking and learning. Mark it on your calendars; more about this PD Conference to come!

Seized Professional Development Opportunities

Many of our faculty have pursued interesting and topical professional development throughout the past year.  Professional Development offers opportunities for growth that can be incorporated into our teaching. We are working on developing a repository of professional development activities so we can learn from the experience of others, and maintain a comprehensive list of our faculty's pursuit of professional development activities.
Outside of presenting research and papers at conferences and workshops, oppoortunities of which are abundant and truly impressive, FAST folks have attended some engaging and relevant conferences and workshops both within Sheridan and outside of our College. If you haven't seized the opportunity to attend a professional development activity, please do. Take your proposal to your Associate Dean who will review and share with the approval committee. It is our understanding that this past year, no professional development applications were denied by the committee!
Here are some examples of PD conferences and workshops from the recent past:
  • Armstrong's Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Training Session learning about the latest technology for integration into the Electrical Engineering Technician's Programmable Logic Controllers course

IEEE 5G

Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Technology Hosted IEEE 5G Summit

This one day summit provided a platform for industry leaders, innovators, academics and researchers to learn, from industry experts, about 5G technology and exchange ideas in emerging communication technologies that may help in fast-tracking standards and expediting real-world deployment.
Much appreciation to MEET professors, Mouhamed Abdulla and Zohreh Motamedi, who did a fantastic job of planning, coordinating and executing this successful and informative event.

5th Annual Architecture Week a Great
Success!

A fantastic variety of architectural technology instruction was offered during the 5th annual Arch Tech week. All Arch Tech students were involved in the week-long event, participating in activities like building structures, touring local landmarks, and learning from experienced guest speakers. The week was filled with an exciting array of 'outside-of-the-box' learning activities which provided an interactive and unique learning experience. Beyond that, Arch Tech week fostered a sense of community and collaboration within the School of Architectural Technology, and expanded our liaisons with external partners and influencers.
Jacqueline, Brad, and Amr from the City of Mississauga’s Urban Planning Department presented the Tactical Urbanism project that they set-up on the street at City Hall this summer. We were fortunate enough to have them stay with us during the event's zenith, offering one-to-one feedback to over 250 students during the all-school charrette. It was a great learning experience as well as a great networking opportunity for the students as they formed new connections with each other.
Thank you to all our staff who worked so hard to make this week-long event a great success, and to the students who participated with enthusiasm and creativity. An extra big thank you to Shannon Pirie who worked tirelessly to deliver this unique and special week of hands-on learning.

Announcing the Launch of thinkFAST

We are so excited to announce the official launch of our brand new student-centred website...
           thinkFAST.sheridancollege.ca

This website represents many of the special features of  FAST's practical, project-based education, all targeted and relevant to a student population. ThinkFAST features FAST news and events, details on all FAST clubs (both SSU clubs and those not affiliated with the SSU), various student projects (Capstones, Technical Reports, CCR Activities, Studio 6 Projects, Student Research) and Awards.

Please help us to promote thinkFAST to our students by mentioning it in class, posting the url on your SLATE groups and making sure your clubs know about it. We want to showcase our student's diverse activities both in and out of the classroom. Feel free to send us information about students for students and we will try to incorporate it into the site. ThinkFAST is a progressive website that will evolve and expand as content and technologies progress.
