Dr. Kelly Schwartzenburg Cannon has joined our team as the new director of inpatient perinatal psychiatry.
Dr. Cannon is a board-certified psychiatrist with more than 12 years of experience in the inpatient clinical setting. She specializes in providing psychiatric care for maternity and postpartum patients.
A graduate of LSU Health Science Center in Shreveport, Dr. Cannon is proficient in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric issues and substance abuse and leads treatment planning through medication management and therapeutic interventions. She spent her residency at LSUHSC/Ochsner New Orleans and most recently worked at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge as an attending inpatient psychiatrist.

World Autism Awareness Day

Tomorrow is World Autism Awareness Day and it's a day to champion the equal rights and dignity of the millions of Americans on the autism spectrum and to celebrate the immense contributions of all neurodiverse people, whose perspectives and experiences make America a richer Nation.
In recognition of World Autism Awareness Day, Emilee Coblentz, journalist at USA TODAY, wrote a letter to all parents of a newly-diagnosed child on World Autism Day.
"To the parent of a newly diagnosed child, I hope you know how proud of you I am. You want to learn. You want to grow. You want to have a beautiful life with your child. I know that."

BR Health District Interest Survey

Substance use disorder has a debilitating impact on individuals, families, and communities.
In a healthcare setting, patients with SUD can present with complex care needs and providing care for these patients can be very challenging. Equipping healthcare providers and staff with tools to care for this patient population is important because healthcare is often the first point of contact for people with SUD.
The Baton Rouge Health District's Substance Use Awareness Taskforce is made up of champions from each of your organizations who are passionate about helping people to overcome SUD and addiction. This taskforce is working to provide offerings that resource you and your team with tools and support for this patient population.

Mental Health Tech Program

In partnership with Baton Rouge Community College, Woman’s will provide a unique opportunity for two of our current employees to complete a paid 10-week Mental Health Tech program and have the opportunity to be a part of the staff when the unit opens this fall.
The Woman’s Hospital Perinatal Mental Health Unit is the state’s first inpatient pregnancy and postpartum psychiatric unit. The unit has a specialty focus on perinatal women suffering from acute mental health conditions and requiring detainment for the treatment of perinatal women suffering from mental health illness.
As a key member of the healthcare team, the Mental Health Technician will provide essential support to mothers experiencing perinatal mental health challenges. This role involves ensuring the emotional and psychological well-being of patients during the critical perinatal period and assisting in creating a supportive and therapeutic environment.
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Two years of prior experience as a Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, Patient Care Tech or other related experience with hands-on patient care is preferred.
  • This experience does not have to be with Woman’s.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with patients and their families.
  • Ability to remain calm and composed in high-stress situations and maintain a compassionate and empathetic approach.
  • Understanding of perinatal mental health issues and a desire to work with this specific patient population.
  • Familiarity with healthcare regulations and compliance standards related to patient care and documentation.
Class schedule starting May 14, 2024, and consists of eight weeks of classroom, Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:00 AM-2:30 PM, in addition to two weeks of clinical Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week. Click here to see the course curriculum.
