We are pleased to announce that the Jericho Smart Sensing Laboratory has been recognised at the 2020 dmi: Design Value Awards with an Honourable Mention for delivering significant value through the excellence of Design for the Royal Australian Air Force.
The pursuit of emergent disruptive technology is a key driver within the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) risks and capability gaps. This collaborative project between The University of Sydney and RAAF encompasses the Jericho Smart Sensing Laboratory (JSSL) supported by Sydney Nano.
This design approach challenges the traditional operating picture in both high-end science research and Defence technology development. The science was driven by an embedded design thinking approach to extract the maximum creative solutions in the shortest possible time in order to accelerate innovation for defence deployment. This objective of bringing design into a nanoscience laboratory was to better understand the end user’s (RAAF) problems and frame the technology development towards building a tangible prototype that tests the ideas with the end user in field application. The activities included many co-design workshops, co-created artefacts, cross-functional stakeholder engagements, rapid prototyping, and iterative review of the end user field requirements. This transdisciplinary venture is unique in its collaboration and contrasts traditional science-led internally focused strategic planning process in Defence.
Well done for this international recognition of the JSSL team’s collaborative efforts.
