Sydney Nano Artists in Residence (AIR)

It is with great pleasure that we announce our two inaugural Sydney Nano Artists in Residence:
  • Joyce Hinterding from Sydney College of the Arts, who will be working with Associate Professor Alice Motion on the NanoSonic Stories Catalyst; and
  • Luke Hespanhol from the School of Architecture, Design and Planning, who will be working with Dr Diana Chester and Ben Carey on the NanoResonance Catalyst.
This is first iteration of an annual Sydney Nano ‘Artist in Residence’ program launched in Semester 2, 2020. Facilitated by the Sydney Nano Early Career Researcher (ECR) Forum, the program is designed to facilitate collaborations between selected artists and researchers in the area of nano and quantum sciences. The residency will enable a space for artists to explore relationships between their artistic practice and the latest research in nanoscience and technology, with a view towards the creation and exhibition of original artistic work that foregrounds these relationships.
The aims of the AIR include supporting interdisciplinary collaborations between sciences and arts, developing exciting public facing knowledge and creative outputs of and about nanoscience research, and contributing to the development of scientific/arts collaborative research methods. In 2020, the Sydney Nano ECR Forum will facilitate two concurrent AIR programs linked to the Sydney Nano Catalyst projects: NanoResonance and NanoSonic Stories, respectively.
Joyce Hinterding

Joyce Hinterding

Joyce Hinterding is a Senior Lecturer at Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney. She is an internationally renowned artist whose practice is focused on explorations into energetic forces, through custom-built field recording and monitoring technologies. Her research into acoustic and electromagnetic phenomena has produced large scale sculptural antenna works, experimental graphite antenna drawings, sound-producing installations, and experimental audio works for performance. She is looking forward to working with Alice Motion and the Nanosonic Stories team on their catalyst project, researching effective ways to communicate nanoscience through sound. Joyce brings extensive experience with specialist soundscape recording technologies and innovative approaches to deep listening.

Dr Luke Hespanhol

Luke Hespanhol

Dr Luke Hespanhol is a media artist, interaction designer, researcher, producer, and lecturer in Design at the School of Architecture, Design and Planning, The University of Sydney. His research ranges from creative technologies, digital storytelling, digital placemaking, and technology-mediated social interactions, to urban robotics, media architecture and smart cities. As Artist in Residence for the NanoResonance Catalyst project, Luke will investigate the use of a range of creative technologies in the design of immersive visual and sonic visualisations, with the goal of engaging the general public in learning and appreciation of data emerging from nano environments.
