Staniel Cay Sunfish Open
Presented by:
Staniel Cay Sailing Club

The Staniel Cay Sailing Club wishes to keep the New Year’s sailing tradition alive and well at Staniel Cay. The “C-Class Mixed Doubles Regatta” and the “A-Class Challenge” of previous years are not possible in an age where social distancing is the norm and requirement. However, the comradery and competition among and between the community of Staniel Cay and our guests from all over the world is important for Staniel Cay and enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. To this end, the Staniel Cay Sailing Club will put on a New Year’s event that is both an exhibition and a chance for our visitors to compete against each other and against the local sailors. The sunfish format (one sailor per boat) provides a chance to socialize and compete while still observing current Covid protocols.

Format: Teams of 3, individual signups will be placed on a team.  Each team is allowed up to 2 alternates.  (Alternates may be needed if higher winds require a second person in the boat). 3 heats. Team with most points after 3 races will be declared the winner. Second and Third prizes will also be awarded.

Date: Saturday, January 2, 2021

Time: 10am, first race starts. Awards ceremony immediately following the races at the Boat Yard.

Race Location: Staniel Cay Boat Yard (past the Church on the right). All races start from the beach here. Refreshments will be available.

Other viewing options: Government Dock. Or follow the race by boat.

Sign Up:
Sign up now for the race at the SCYC marina office.

Pre-Race meeting: 1/1 at SCYC, 5pm,  Q & A, other logistics, rules, etc. will be discussed.

Skill/Age Level: Sunfish racing can be challenging for beginners. This race is for intermediate or advanced sailors, i.e., reasonable sailing experience is required. However, it is open to all ages and genders.

Equipment: A sunfish boat complete with all rigging will be provided to each contestant. Individual sailors are required to bring their own life jacket and any other items they may need (gloves, etc.). If you have your own sunfish, you are welcome to use it. However, ALL boats will be rotated each race, with the winning boat being used by the previous race last place finisher, etc.  This will ensure a more or less level playing field for all teams.
