Faculty Updates

A peek into the busy lives of our beloved faculty.

Marcia Griffin

2022 was a great year with a lot of travels.  We visited the UP of Michigan and made a stop in Ohio on our way back. We saw a lot of fabulous light houses, museums, did a little rock hunting, bike riding, and hiking.

We have enjoyed being Mimi and “owl” to our grandson, Rowan, who turned 3 in Nov.  He now has a new baby brother.  Wells Leander Griffin was born on December 13th.  We also have a new fur member to our family, a stray kitten.  We decided to keep him and named him Rocky.  He is such a sweet cat, except when he is pouncing on Angie, my dog. Angie doesn’t even mind sharing her bed.

Please continue to update the program with your current contact information for our alumni database. You can email me at mmgriffi@uncg.edu.

2022 has been a very busy and very fulfilling year! I’m so proud of the Capstone work of the classes of 2022 and 2023 and am excited to brainstorm project ideas with the class of 2024. It was fun (and exhausting!) to help plan and execute the 20th (+2) Anniversary Gala in October – it was so great to see alumni and friends of the program all together.

This year, I finished my coursework for my PhD in Adult Education at NC State and I’m beginning to collect data for my dissertation research. I’m excited to embark on this final stage of my program! In addition to writing my dissertation proposal, I’ve helped a few alumni prepare their Capstone manuscripts for publication. Fingers crossed that you’ll see those in your favorite journal soon! I had the opportunity to attend a few conferences in-person for the first time in a couple years, and had a great time at the Association of Professors of Human and Medical Genetics meeting in Palm Springs, and the NSGC meeting in Nashville. I also traveled for fun including a girls' weekend with classmates from the class of 2008 and a trip to Chicago to see Harry Styles with my sister !

Mom-life has been a rollercoaster as my son Rhett is leaning into the “threenager” adage. There are more good days than terrible ones, and I’m thankful that he has a few quiet interests like reading and puzzles, which nicely balances hobbies of jumping off of anything and watching Halloween movies (even when it’s not Halloween). My husband Justin is still chef-ing at Foster’s Market in Durham. We’ve spent this year traveling to Colorado for a family reunion, going to as many Durham Bulls games as our schedules allow, and spending time at the lake with my family.

I’m looking forward to the new adventures 2023 will bring including [hopefully] completing my dissertation research, lots of publications, and lots of fun.

Hi everyone! It was so wonderful to see so many of you face-to-face at the 20-year gala. I always enjoy hearing where your careers and lives have taken you. I am looking forward to teaching Principles of Genetic Counseling II again this spring and will be participating in admissions again for the first time in a long time. I am thankful to have the chance to continue to be involved with training the upcoming generations of genetic counselors. I am also still working remotely for Metis Genetics part-time seeing patients and am also participating with the USC Genetic Counseling program as a consultant on a grant to develop training resources for genetic counseling students in telemedicine. My three part-time jobs keep me busy, in addition to my two kids and our new puppy pictured here.

It was so wonderful to celebrate the anniversary of the UNCG genetic counseling program in October.  I loved seeing so many alumni, friends and faculty. I am so appreciative of the dedication that was involved in the creation of the program and in sustaining the highly regarded training program for genetic counselors. I am impressed by the successes of our alumni.

On a personal note, I am happy to have colleagues who have joined our Cone Health pediatric genetics group, Dr. Rose Guo and alumnus, Aimee Morrow, CGC. My daughter Sofia is completing her first semester of college and has chosen Sociology and Music as major/minor. Best Wishes!

I’m Paige Babb and I’m an prenatal genetic counselor at MUSC in Charleston, SC. I’m not a graduate of UNCG, but I’m lucky enough to teach the embryology course with my best friend, coworker, and UNCG grad, Laura Bulmer. When I’m not at work, you’ll find me reading, watching baseball, or watching movies with friends.

2022 has been a big year for me, both personally and professionally! This summer I left my role at Cone MFM and joined GeneDx/Sema4 as a report writer on the neurology team. I have absolutely loved it so far! The cases are always fascinating and working from home from the comfort of my couch with my pups is unmatched. I also co-taught Psychosocial Seminar with my classmate Aimee for the first time in the fall semester, which was so incredibly fun and fulfilling. I really enjoyed getting to give back to the program which gave me so much and working with all of the amazing students of the classes of 2023 and 2024.

Excitingly, my husband and I are expecting our first child, a daughter, in January 2023! We could not be more thrilled for this next chapter in our lives. Included are a couple of photos from our maternity shoot in downtown Greensboro, our favorite place and where we are still so happy to fondly call home.
