2022 AGCPD Outstanding Supervisor

Danielle Karlowicz, MS, CGC

Danielle Karlowicz is a Duke prenatal genetic counselor. Students have described her as being an extraordinary supervisor as she anticipates students’ needs, trusts and believes in them, and encourages them during times of uncertainty. She is always available, communicative, direct, approachable and welcoming. Danielle’s kindness and openness helps students feel comfortable engaging with patients and the healthcare team, which boosts their confidence. Students sense her investment in the student-supervisor relationship and appreciate how she positions them to naturally find their voice and own way doing things in a supportive learning atmosphere, providing helpful balanced feedback.

Danielle created rare clinical experiences for students during the Covid-19 pandemic and contributed to our program’s reaccreditation process. She has been an invited speaker at a past supervision workshop and creates meaningful learning opportunities for first-year students. We are proud to present Danielle Karlowicz as the UNCG Genetic Counseling Program’s 2022 AGCPD Outstanding Supervisor Awardee!

Response from Danielle Karlowicz, MS, CGC:
I am honored to have been nominated for the AGCPD Outstanding Supervisor Award! Working with students is such a rewarding experience and I find that I am always learning from them. They are coming in with didactic knowledge that I may not yet know or may have forgotten about in my time since my GC program. They always have little tips and tricks that are helpful. Working with the students allows me to, indirectly, be in touch with what other counselors are doing across the state. I also enjoy getting to know the students! Every student has a unique story and history and it’s interesting to learn what brought them to the field. Having a supervision role keeps me on my toes as well. I have to ensure I’m up to date on the specific condition/research/literature and that I’m performing a thorough case prep. I truly believe that mentoring students makes me a better Genetic Counselor.
