Hvar Town, Croatia

Hvar Town, Hvar Island

*Please note: this will be our first stop after leaving Split on 9-21-2024. We're expected to arrive around 6pm. We will dock and stay overnight in the main marina; easily walkable to the historic town center, great shopping and copious restaurants & bars.

Thanks to its preserved Renaissance center, Hvar Town is one of the most visited on the Dalmatian Coast. It has long been popular with Croatian artists and now, celebrities, lending it a chic ambience reflected in the ever-growing number of stylish restaurants, bars and hotels.

Hvar’s medieval Old Town is nestled between the Hvar Port and the rising terrain. The Hvar Old Town layout is mostly attributed to the Venetians (who ruled over the town from 1278-1358 and again from 1420-1797). Many of the Old Town structures feature a decorative Venetian flair (albeit, with a touch of local Croatian style).

The best way to discover Hvar Old Town is to follow the cobblestone lanes past historic dwellings, small churches and into the many squares.

At the center of the Old Town (adjacent to the port) is the Hvarska Pjaca, the large main square, often referred to as St. Stephen’s Square. Many of the historic Hvar attractions are found on the square and the lanes that lead away from it.

Wonderful traditional restaurant Dalmatino is set in Hvar old town. Eat outside or downstairs near the kitchen if you can get a table, the atmosphere is second to none - and the food is reasonably priced and exceptional.

We like the little touches by the very well educated waiters who will give you little samples of local liqueurs each with their own story, recommend which one of the local wines would be perfect with your meal and generally make it one of the nicest eating out experiences. Explore Hvar Old Town.Wander the narrow streets of Hvar Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admire the Venetian Renaissance architecture, and take in the sights and sounds of this charming town.
Visit the Hvar Fortress.Hike up to the Hvar Fortress, a 17th-century fortress that offers stunning views of the town and harbor. Looming high above the town and lit with a golden glow at night, this medieval castle occupies the site of an ancient Illyrian settlement dating from before 500 BC. The views looking down over Hvar and the Pakleni Islands are magnificent, and well worth the trudge up through the old-town streets. Once you clear the town walls it's a gently sloping meander up the tree-shaded hillside to the fortress – or you can drive to the very top (in a taxi).

The Byzantines built a citadel here in the 6th century, and the Venetians began construction of the present fortress in 1278. It was strengthened in 1551, which may have saved the lives of Hvar's population, who sheltered here in 1571 when the Turks sacked their town. The Austrians renovated it in the 19th century, adding barracks.
